Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro came to Florida late last year on a visa. To deport him, the Secretary of State could rule that Bolsonaro is harming US foreign policy. Late last year, Bolsonaro, while still Brazil's head of state, came to Florida, with people spotting him everywhere from fast-food joints to grocery stores. Under federal law, Bolsonaro could be deported if the Secretary of State has "reasonable grounds" to believe that his presence in the country "would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States." Under that provision, Bolsonaro could be deported whether or not he has even been charged with a crime.
It came amid a surge in the number of undocumented migrants seeking to enter the US. An analyst told Insider that a perfect storm of factors is driving people north to the border. Ariel Ruiz, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, said that the factors driving migration are "intersecting and compounding," and driving the surge from Central America, South America and the Caribbean. In Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, increased political repression and inflation related to the COVID-19 pandemic are key factors driving the surge, while in Haiti, he said, a surge in gang violence was the main driver. The wealth available in the US, the relative poverty of other nearby nations, and limited options for legal migration, mean that high undocumented migration is likely to continue, Ruiz concluded.
MEXICO CITY, Jan 5 (Reuters) - "That's an attack plane, Dad," said one of David Tellez's young children as they spotted Mexican military aircraft touching down alongside their Aeromexico passenger plane early on Thursday. "As we were accelerating for take-off, we heard gunshots very close to the plane, and that's when we all threw ourselves to the floor," Tellez said after the incident in the northern city of Culiacan. He told Reuters he had reached the airport for his 8:24 a.m. flight without incident, despite encountering road blockades set up after overnight shootouts. Yet, just as flight AM165 to Mexico City was about to take off, a succession of military planes landed on the airstrip. Ulloa had been discussing ways to work with Latino Media Network's owners Stephanie Valencia and Jess Morales Rocketto, Castro said. Valencia and Morales Rocketto called Ulloa "a true trailblazer in Latino media." "He saw the value and promise of the Latino media industry before many others did. He's got that kind of money and he's very committed to the community,'" Castro said. “I am heartbroken by the sudden passing of my friend, Walter Ulloa, a trailblazer who has helped transform Spanish-language media,” Ruiz, the outgoing chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said in a tweet Tuesday.
The policy, known as Title 42, had already been ruled unlawful by a federal judge. Though President Joe Biden is now pushing for an end to Title 42, he previously fought in federal court to preserve the policy despite his campaign promise to restore asylum. Title 42 was never about public health. Indeed, Title 42 came to be after the Trump White House reportedly put the squeeze on the CDC. It’s no coincidence that Title 42 has disproportionately denied Black and brown migrants their right to seek asylum.

The Postal Service expects all priority mail packages shipped by Dec. 19 and express packages shipped by Dec. 23 to arrive at their destinations by Christmas. “The Postal Service has shown an inclination to do whatever it takes to avoid the nightmare that they had in 2020. “I am deeply concerned about the severe delays and interruptions in postal service experienced by Montanans,” Daines said in a statement. Earlier this year, Congress appropriated $107 million to the Postal Service to fund a systemwide overhaul to modernize equipment and facilities. “We expect a very successful 2022 peak holiday season,” said Albert Ruiz, a Postal Service spokesperson.

REUTERS/Leonardo Fernandez ViloriaBOGOTA, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Colombian leftist guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN) on Monday declared a nine-day unilateral ceasefire over the Christmas period, as part of a bid to support peace talks with the Andean country's government, which urged other illegal armed groups to follow suit. Colombia's government and the ELN last week completed the first cycle of peace talks between the two parties in Venezuela's capital Caracas. The unilateral ceasefire will only apply to Colombia's military and police, the ELN said in a recorded statement, adding it reserves the right to defend itself if attacked. Following the announcement, Colombia's government called on other armed groups also to call a ceasefire. Title 42 is a part of U.S. law that deals with public health, social welfare and civil rights. Bottom line, a federal judge ordered the Biden administration to stop using Title 42 by Dec. 21, stating that it was "arbitrary and capricious." The administration had tried to stop using Title 42 sooner, but was blocked by a federal court in Louisiana. Why is using Title 42 controversial? So if we're still using Title 42, why are so many people illegally crossing the border now?

In two decades the Asian American electorate surged 139%, according to Pew Research. The congressman added that beyond Asian Americans, his win also showcases the power of a broad collective. “If you look at what the House Democratic Caucus did, it was, I feel, remarkable.

"The IMF understands that the floods have changed the macroeconomic assumptions on which the programme was designed," the ministry told Reuters. Pakistan reserves stood at $7.8 billion as of Nov. 18, barely enough to cover imports for a month. ARY News reported on Monday that the IMF had asked Pakistan to reduce expenses before talks on the ninth review. The ninth review has been pending since September. The IMF told Reuters last week that finalisation of a recovery plan from the floods was essential to support discussions, along with continued financial support from multilateral and bilateral partners.

The future of University of Miami’s football team was supposed to hinge on Jaden Rashada, a four-star quarterback from California who was a high-profile example of how big money promises to drive success in the new world of college football. In August, Rashada committed to Miami to begin playing in 2023, lured partly by a lucrative endorsement offer from LifeWallet, the medical-records and data company where billionaire Hurricanes booster John Ruiz is chief executive. Ruiz, through his company, and other boosters have been pouring money into name, image and likeness deals meant to entice top recruits to Miami’s sports programs.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the most compact in the tournament’s 92-year history. Not only did the country need eight stadiums to accommodate the tournament’s 62 matches, Qatar also needed to come up with housing options and training facilities for each of the 32 qualified teams. And because FIFA rules stipulate that all squads must stay in the country until they’re eliminated, leaning on Qatar’s neighbors for help wasn’t an option. While the World Cup is normally spread across an entire country, Qatar is roughly the size of Connecticut and everything radiates out from the capital city of Doha. When the World Cup expands to 48 teams in 2026, it will take up even more space.
CNN —‘Tis the season for wall charts and fans gathering around to pick their starting teams for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. “It’s always difficult when a guy helps you get to the World Cup, he scores three goals in World Cup qualifying and isn’t going to be a part of the program. Nobody can predict the future, but a San Francisco-based startup called Kettle seems able to predict where wildfires could start in California. That means Kettle provides insurance for insurance companies. But Kettle's focus on reinsurance, rather than selling its software directly to insurance companies, is unique, Manning says. Most reinsurers predict wildfire risk through a decades-old technique that relies on historical data, Manning adds. In other words, reinsurance companies do benefit large insurers — but they also make sure you're able to get the money you're owed if disaster strikes.
Argentina limit changes for Sunday's Twickenham test

LONDON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Argentina will field two new front rowers and have made a switch on the wing in three changes for Sunday’s test against England at Twickenham. England and Argentina share the same World Cup pool next year but Cheika told a virtual news conference on Thursday that was not an immediate concern in their approach to Sunday's test. "For us it's about changing a little bit the style of our and our mental approach as well," he said. Cheika has split this week with coaching Lebanon at the Rugby League World Cup, where they play Australia in the quarter-finals at Huddersfield on Friday. Playing in their sixth World Cup, Costa Rica are no longer minnows and Luis Fernando Suarez's squad will be expected to do more than just make up the numbers in the 32-team tournament. The same players also featured at the World Cup in 2018 and, although Costa Rica were eliminated in the group stage, Suarez has a core of senior men with tournament experience to count on. "I had to persuade them to stay on and play another World Cup and I'm glad I did," Suarez said. He coached Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup before leading Honduras at the 2014 edition. But Costa Rica hold a special place in his heart, which led to the Colombian renewing his contract despite interest from other teams.
Ukrainian officials have said recent Russian airstrikes knocked out nearly one-third of the country’s electricity-generating power stations and damaged some of the country’s crucial central-heating systems. Those systems use a collection of plants that mostly burn natural gas to heat up water, which is then pumped through citywide piping networks. The hot water heats almost half of all Ukraine’s buildings. The damage makes cities including Kyiv vulnerable to not only blackouts, but also extended periods without heat.
Natural gas stoves and ovens can leak harmful chemicals inside homes even when they're not in use. The World Health Organization has said there’s no safe level of benzene exposure when it comes to cancer risk. Decades of research has suggested that gas stoves are a source of indoor air pollution. Another co-author of the study, Drew Michanowicz, previously identified 21 hazardous air pollutants from gas stoves and outdoor gas lines at Boston homes. Pregnant women, infants and young children may be particularly susceptible to adverse health outcomes from long-term benzene exposure, De Vizcaya Ruiz said.
