CNN —Five former and current members of the US Coast Guard testified before a subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment while serving and called for major changes to how the Coast Guard handles reports. It’s the first to be released out of a string of ongoing government inquiries triggered by CNN’s reporting on a secret Coast Guard probe into sexual abuse at its prestigious Coast Guard Academy. “It’s the exact same story, and the Coast Guard is just saying, ‘It’s OK.’ I’m tired of the words,” Ward said. Action actually has to be taken in order to do it.”In closing, Ward told the committee, “I loved the Coast Guard. But there is a certain part of the Coast Guard that is completely broken.”

Sam Dogen, 47, retired from his corporate job in 2012 and achieved FIRE status — an acronym for financial independence, retire early — but over a decade later, he returned to the office. Dogen wanted to return to work for extra income as his children got older and to contribute more to the Silicon Valley startup scene. He got a job as the head of content at a startup, where he wrote articles and newsletters. But within a few weeks, he already knew the job wasn't working out. He decided to leave his position and go back to being a stay-at-home dad — essentially retiring early for a second time.

The door plug was removed at the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington, last September so that problems with some rivets could be repaired. But the necessary paperwork for that temporary door plug removal was apparently never created. But under questioning from the NTSB Lund admitted that it’s not clear who and when that door plug was put in place. “Are you 100% sure there will never be an unauthorized removal (of a door plug)?” Homendy asked. Asked if he could promise there will not be another door plug improperly installed, Silva answer, “I cannot make a promise or guarantee of that.

MyKayla Skinner posted a video to Instagram on Tuesday calling on Simone Biles to stop her 11.8 million followers from “cyberbullying” her after Biles appeared to clapback at comments by Skinner. “To Simone, I am asking you directly and publicly to please put a stop to this," Skinner said in Tuesday's video. A few days after her comments in June, Skinner posted an apology on social media. After Biles' Instagram post last week, Skinner reportedly blocked the 11-time Olympic medalist on social media, according to an Instagram story posted by Chiles and a post on X by Biles. The edited photo implied that Skinner should have made the 2016 U.S. Olympic team over Douglas, who became the first Black Olympic all-around champion in 2012.

By the time Kim Chang-gyu returned to Jecheon, South Korea, after four decades away to become the mayor, his hometown felt resigned to its decline. The town’s center was dotted with vacant storefronts, and local businessmen fretted about how tough it was to find workers. Like many other small South Korean cities, Jecheon, cradled at the foot of two mountain ranges, is being eroded by rapid aging and rock-bottom birthrates. Other shrinking cities have tried offering money to entice newlyweds or free housing to parents of school-age children. If he could persuade enough of them to move to Jecheon — population 130,000 and shrinking — he thought they might lay the groundwork for its future.

There are still adjustments moving abroad, and hopeful movers need to know that. Living abroad brings its own challenges, along with rewards. "But just always have a support group that are dealing with living abroad because you need that adjustment group to help you put things into perspective." "But if you want the adventure of living abroad and learning a new culture, being curious, that kind of thing, that's when you probably should really consider living abroad."

Now, a team of engineers and geologists brings a new theory to the table — a hydraulic lift device that would have floated the heavy stones up through the middle of Egypt’s oldest pyramid using stored water. Water from ancient streams flowed into a system of trenches and tunnels that surrounded the Step Pyramid, according to the study team. The shaft within the Step Pyramid is connected to a 200-meter-long (656-foot-long) underground tunnel that connects to another vertical shaft outside the pyramid. Conversely, a moderate-sized hydraulic lift can raise 50 to 100 tons. “It doesn’t mean (the hydraulic lift device) wasn’t used,” she added.

“Back in the day,” said Lim Hyung-kyu, a retired Samsung Electronics executive now in his 70s, “my weeks were Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Friday, Friday.”Mr. Lim joined Samsung, South Korea’s largest company, in 1976 and rose through the ranks to chief technology officer. For much of his 30-plus years at Samsung, working on the weekends was normal — and legal under the nation’s labor laws. South Korean labor laws cap working hours to 52 a week: 40 standard hours with up to 12 for overtime. But over the past few months, some influential South Korean companies have told executives to work longer hours, in some cases telling them to come to the office six days a week. Some people in South Korean business are predicting that lower-ranked employees and managers at smaller companies will feel pressure to follow suit.

If you're considering leaving your job, here's Dogen's best advice to follow in his footsteps. How you manage leaving your job is going to depend on your specific circumstances. If you're willing to do something similar, "more often than not, your employer will work with you — especially if you're a better than average employee," Dogen says. I stopped spending money on things that weren't of value to me." Side hustles and investing in retirement can boost one's savingsOver the past decade, Grumet has padded his savings through various income streams. In addition to hospice work, he's also tried side hustles that include medical expert work, nursing home medical directing, medical blogging, and several forms of consulting. While the extra income has helped boost his savings, Grumet said investing much of this income into the stock market — and seeing strong investment returns — is what's allowed his finances to truly blossom. Grumet said his retirement goal was to have at least 25 times his total annual spending in savings — he's already met this milestone.

Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. If my kids are inside, they may knock on the door to see if they can play. My kids get play dates without us having to schedule or drive anyone, and more often than not, everyone plays by the rules. Adults often stop by to chat, too, which is also nice for me; our backyard has become something of a neighborhood hangout. There are rules, and all the kids have to follow themIt's simple enough: everyone needs to be having fun. Other parents on my block also let kids come by to play, and each household (and yard) may have slightly different rules.

Over the past decade, Chinese organized crime groups in the U.S. quietly became the dominant money launderers for Mexican cartels. Since 2023, federal prosecutors have charged at least 31 people linked to Chinese groups accused of laundering cartel drug money. In the ensuing months, the team began to understand for the first time how the Chinese became the Mexican cartels’ go-to money launderers. The Chinese money brokers then arrange for the cartels to receive the equivalent amount in pesos or cryptocurrency in Mexico.

What's more, she's avoided being sandwiched between caring for children and her parents. Growing up in the Philippines, Cristeta Comerford helped her mother, a seamstress, cook for a household of more than a dozen. They were simple meals: rice, a vegetable and fish or chicken, sometimes with extra potatoes to stretch the meal. You should go to Cordon Bleu and be a chef,” Ms. Comerford, who goes by Cris or “Cheffie,” said in an interview on Thursday. She never did go to culinary school, but she became the first woman and person of color to serve as White House executive chef. Ms. Comerford, 61, retired last week, having cooked for five presidents and their families, charted out more than 50 state dinners, and overseen a renovation of the White House kitchen that was built more than a century ago.

Last year, after selling a chunk of his stock and bond portfolio to purchase a house in cash, Sam Dogen found himself with too little passive income to support his family's budget. It turned out, this particular gig didn't align with his personal or financial priorities at this point in his life. By last year, his passive income portfolio, which includes stocks, bonds and real estate investments, among others, was bringing in about $380,000 a year. "That shored up a huge hole in my passive income," Dogen says. That won't produce passive income unless Dogen reinvests it, but it gave him the cash cushion to paper over some short-term cracks in his finances.
