Every Monday morning on The Point, we kick off the week with a tipsheet on the latest in the presidential campaign. Here’s what we’re looking at this week:The attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a rally Saturday will probably fundamentally change the messaging and direction of the presidential campaign and enhance Trump’s standing, at least in the near term. It created an indelible image and captured the essence of Trump’s MAGA movement: under attack but defiant, bloody but unbowed. As a person who spent the first part of my career as a graphic designer and art director, I immediately saw the visual power and nearly infinite graphic possibilities of this image. Victimization: Trump has spent much of his time in presidential politics concocting a narrative of victimization, insisting that he and his movement were under attack and needed to fight back to save “our country.” He, and his supporters who were killed and injured, can now portray themselves as legitimate victims.

The defiance Biden has thrust into public view at the start of a critical week is a feature, not a bug. Biden’s dug-in stance in the wake of the first presidential debate is not too surprising to those who know him well. “We all watched the debate,” a House Democrat who supports Biden told CNN. “The question of how to move forward has been well aired for over a week now,” Biden wrote in his letter to House Democrats. Biden’s campaign strategy to largely stay off the campaign trail in the middle of a pandemic faced no shortage of doubters.

Read previewMonths after "coffee badging" was coined, some workers are still using the move to avoid having to work from the office … sort of. They're still going to the office, it's true; they're just not spending much time there. The continued practice of coffee badging highlights the resistance some companies are facing as they attempt to increase office attendance after shifting to hybrid or fully in-person attendance. Business Insider previously reported that Dell, meanwhile, is implementing a color-coded system to grade office attendance for hybrid workers. Are you coffee badging at work, or do you have another work story to share?

Despite the pullback, a primary uptrend remains in place for the CAC 40, in addition to the related iShares MSCI France ETF (EWQ) . Both proxies for French stocks appear to be finding their footing, which suggests that the market is welcoming the latest news regarding the election. Once the final outcome is determined, it would be natural for investors to respond favorably to the removal of uncertainty, particularly given the oversold status of French stocks. This suggests a counter-trend phase of outperformance is possible for French stocks versus U.S. stocks. Recent stabilization in many French stocks shows a positive reaction to widespread intermediate-term oversold conditions, which we gauge using the weekly stochastic oscillator.

But Mr. Netanyahu’s statement on Sunday night dampened those expectations, since it appeared to lessen the chances of a compromise with Hamas over the length and permanence of the cease-fire. Mr. Netanyahu’s grip on power relies on the support of two far-right parties opposed to any agreement that would leave Hamas in power in Gaza. “The efforts of the military in Gaza may help him get more from Hamas,” Mr. Shtrauchler said. Additionally, Mr. Netanyahu may be trying to stave off the collapse of his coalition until the end of July, when Parliament goes on recess. “He’s trying to create room for maneuver — and for that, he needs time,” Mr. Shtrauchler said.

I mean, he was direct, too, and people figured out how to handle him. I heard it again in corporate meeting rooms and during training sessions from colleagues, direct reports, and future managers. I didn't want to lose that strength by hiding it, so I eventually learned to develop situational savviness. For instance, I can identify that my directness allows me to tackle hard challenges that many people shy away from. There are two sides to Tiago Rodrigues, the Portuguese director who has led the Avignon Festival since last year. One — gentle, introspective, given to dissecting intimate human conflicts — has long been evident in his stage productions. That includes “Hecuba, Not Hecuba,” his latest premiere in Avignon, in which a mother fights for justice after her son is mistreated by a state institution. On the other side, Rodrigues has also turned out to be a combative, politically outspoken leader for the French festival, a marquee event on the international theater calendar. JoeyStarr, a French rapper, recited a poem by Léon-Gontran Damas.

CNN —Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won Iran’s presidential election, Iranian state news agency Press TV reported Saturday citing the country’s election headquarters, beating his hardline rival in a pivotal vote at a time of tensions at home and abroad. The first round saw the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979. The lawmaker was the only reformist candidate vying for the top elected seat in the country after dozens of other candidates were barred from running. During the 2022 protests, Pezeshkian said in an interview with Iran’s IRINN TV: “It is our fault. Other factors may be more difficult to change, particularly Iran’s foreign policy.

Here’s what to expect on Friday’ second round of elections, and how the results could impact Iran and the world. AdvertisementBy invoking doomsday weapons, it was clear Katz was alluding to Israel's nuclear weapons arsenal — an arsenal over which neither he nor IAI have any command-and-control. There are eight countries in the world with declared nuclear arsenals, four of which — the United States, China, India, and Russia — have a complete nuclear triad. Israel's triad has some notable distinctions and limitations compared to those of the other four. "Israel's nuclear triad bears the hallmarks of a regional nuclear triad as seen in India and Pakistan, rather than seeking globe-spanning strike capability," Sebastien Roblin, a widely published military-aviation journalist, told Business Insider. I’m not leaving,” Biden declared to spooked campaign staff on a phone call on Wednesday as he searched for an elusive comeback. And even a far more competent damage control effort than the White House and the Biden campaign have mounted so far would have struggled to erase that impression. On Wednesday for instance, the White House picked up Biden’s line that he was jet lagged after two trips to Europe in early June. And Biden had the Democratic governors to the White House. The White House and the campaign said the reports were false.

The charts indicate the TurboTax maker could be caught in a trading range from here and I've got an options strategy that wins if it remains stuck. An Iron Condor is a great trade structure to use when dealing with trading ranges like this one. To construct an Iron Condor, all I have to do is sell a call credit spread and a put credit spread at the same time. Most trading platforms will allow you to put this trade as one unit by selecting "Sell Iron Condor" as the trade structure. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

Relying on a combination of stand-off and glide munitions, Russian aircraft have been targeting Ukrainian critical infrastructure and urban centers. “It would be a Category 5 hurricane,” said one top Democratic official nervous about Biden considering what would happen if the president stepped aside. Biden campaign aides have spent the last couple of days pointing to metrics like some of their best grassroots fundraising days and a surge in job applications since Thursday. Biden is heading to the Camp David presidential retreat where he was expected to spend the rest of the weekend. Democratic operatives always like to mock headlines that describe them as “in disarray.” Now some tell CNN they worry they could end up in more disarray than ever. “President Biden is the nominee and he’s going to remain the nominee,” said Cutter, who is on contract to produce the convention.

President Biden struggled through his first debate of the 2024 campaign against Donald J. Trump, meandering and mumbling through answers as the former president pressed his case for a second term with limited resistance from his rival. Mr. Trump was confident and forceful, even as he let loose a stream of misleading attacks and falsehoods. Mr. Biden spoke with a hoarse and halting voice, closing his eyes occasionally to gather thoughts that sometimes couldn’t be corralled. About halfway through, people close to Mr. Biden put out word that he had a cold. Mr. Trump relentlessly hammered Mr. Biden on areas of vulnerability, sending exaggerations and embellishments — he was the “greatest” and his opponent the “worst” — flying unchecked through the audience-free CNN studio in Atlanta.

The Republican-led House voted on Friday to strip President Biden’s homeland security secretary and secretary of state of their salaries. It approved measures banning military installations from having drag queen story hours for children. The provisions were included in three spending bills to fund the Departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security that House Republicans muscled through largely along party lines — even though none of them have any hope of becoming law. With a government funding deadline looming at the end of September and a high-stakes election in November, lawmakers have entered a period of legislative theatrics, where each chamber is advancing spending bills that the other will never approve. In the House, for a second year in a row, that has meant that Republican leaders have opened the floodgates to a barrage of conservative priorities.
