Inflation was certainly severe and very troubling for markets, but ultimately its sources were transitory, Wieting said. As other energy-based companies and commodities grapple with a transition to clean energy, copper is expected to reap the benefits. The transition to clean energy and the move toward electric vehicles means demand for copper will triple by 2030, according to Citi Global Wealth's 2024 outlook. He believes the Magnificent Seven will be a strong part of the economy going into 2024 once again. Therefore, investors should look for opportunities in mid-cap growth or those within the S&P 400, the benchmark for the US mid-cap stocks.

Can groundhogs or other animals predict the weather?

CNN —Punxatawney Phil, the central character of the annual rite of winter known as Groundhog’s Day, isn’t great at his job. Education Images/Universal Images Group/Getty ImagesThe Old Farmer’s Almanac has aggregated a couple dozen adages about insects, animals and their ability to predict weather patterns. Researchers in Germany also looked into whether various species of animals could detect an oncoming earthquake. Fact vs. folkloreOther tropes about animals’ ability to predict seasonal conditions, however, are wrong. But in reality, the “caterpillar’s coloring is based on how long (the) caterpillar has been feeding, its age, and species,” according to the National Weather Service.

New research upends the trope that women use their looks to get ahead in their careers, showing that men actually reap greater benefits from being attractive in the workplace. A recent study of more than 11,000 Americans conducted over 20 years has found that good-looking men are more likely to attain better jobs and make more money than similarly attractive women. Alexi Gugushvili and Grzegorz Bulczak recorded participants' demographic information and socioeconomic status, then asked volunteers to rate the participants' physical attractiveness on a 4-point scale: Very attractive, attractive, unattractive, and very unattractive. Even with potential obstacles like coming from a low-income household or growing up in a dangerous neighborhood, attractive men still managed to achieve upward mobility. Good-looking women had a slight advantage in their careers over other women deemed less attractive, but men saw the greatest benefits from their physical appearance, according to the report.

Bitcoin investors have high hopes for 2024 given the cryptocurrency's almost too-good-to-be-true setup , but they may have to wait a few weeks more for its next big ascent, according to Wolfe Research. A trio of lawsuits filed in state court in Las Vegas seek unspecified damages from TikTok, Snapchat and Meta Platforms, the owner of Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, on claims including deceptive trade practices and negligence. The lawsuits were filed just ahead of testimony in Congress on Wednesday by top executives of Meta, TikTok, Snap Inc. and other platforms. John Sadler, a spokesperson for Ford, declined to say whether the Nevada lawsuits were timed to coincide with the congressional hearing. But Sadler acknowledged the decision to file the cases in state court instead of joining other states in federal court follows a path the state took in opioid damages claims. “Social media platforms are a bottomless pit where users can spend an infinite amount of their time,” Nevada said in the Snapchat complaint.

Roughly $2.1 trillion of debt connected to commercial real estate assets, including office properties, apartment buildings, hotels, and retail spaces, will come due between now and the end of 2025 in the US, according to the real estate services firm JLL. The wave of maturities and the enormous equity shortfalls have raised concerns that a growing number of commercial real estate debts will fall into distress, forcing banks and other lenders to suffer losses. His group tracked about $15 billion of commercial property debt sales during the year, roughly three times the volume from 2022. Commercial real estate loans differ from residential mortgages taken by homeowners in that most are interest-only or pay down their principal balance minimally and span a decade or less. More banks are exploring loan salesBanks and other lenders generally aren't eager to seize the real estate assets that collateralize their debt.

In 2018, Anna-Lisa Miller was working with agricultural cooperatives in Hawaii, helping them reinvest in their communities through shared ownership. Then she came across an investor presentation from a different universe: KKR, one of the world’s largest private equity firms. In it, a KKR executive, Pete Stavros, discussed a model he had been developing to provide employees with an equity stake in companies it purchased, so the workers would reap some benefits if it was flipped for a profit. By that time, Mr. Stavros had decided to start an organization to promote his model more broadly, hoping to reach the 12 million people who work for companies that private equity firms own. Ms. Miller saw it as a way to move much faster.

Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek is unhappy about Apple's proposed App Store changes . Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek said in an X post on Friday that Apple's changes represent a "new low, even for them." Under Apple's new changes, apps with over one million downloads will need to pay a "core technology fee" for "each first annual install per year." Apple's App Store change not only falls short of that ideal, but "mocks the spirit of the law and the lawmakers who wrote it," Ek said. CNN —A top Pakistan official on Thursday accused India of killing two Pakistani nationals on its soil, citing what he called “a pattern” of alleged Indian assassination plots overseas and raising tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals. India has long accused Pakistan of harboring terrorists, particularly in the disputed and heavily militarized region of Kashmir, which both countries claim in its entirety. Qazi on Thursday compared the alleged killings in Pakistan to other purported recent Indian assassination plots in North America. India and many other countries have publicly warned Pakistan cautioning that it would be consumed by its own culture of terror and violence,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. The Indian government has denied involvement in the American and Canadian cases and has set up a high-level committee to investigate the accusations in the US.

Proper form can help you lift more effectively and avoid the most common gym injuries, according to a physical therapist. Many people struggle with a lack of ankle mobility in the squat, setting them up for inefficient form, Simeonovski said. For example, when bench pressing, aim to keep the elbows around a 45-degree angle instead of directly out to the side in a T shape to correctly engage the chest muscles instead of stressing out the shoulder joint.

Not all AI will be specifically tuned to the requirements you need in an AI solution. Without trust, any AI solution will falter in delivering the results your employees and customers expect and deserve. Any AI solution you want to champion must be accurate every time, the first time, in any challenge you give it. AI solutions in 2024 have incredible potential to automate tasks to make work more efficient, answers more accessible, and reduce cognitive overload.

A travel benefits package is a company-sponsored plan for employees that can include travel stipends or complimentary flights and hotel stays. With many Americans prioritizing travel, we asked three experts for their advice on how businesses could implement travel perks as part of a company benefits package. "But anything that compensates an employee, including travel benefits, should be taken into consideration when you are trying to attract and retain talent." While a travel benefits package can go far in attracting and retaining talent, it doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. Though offering travel benefits is a relatively new frontier for companies, the payoff could be a motivated workforce and an attractive way to appeal to top talent.

BEIJING, Dec 4 (Reuters) - The biggest pig breeders in China, consumer of fully half the world's pork, seem to have bitten off more than they can chew. More huge losses are expected next year, putting China's pig enterprises under pressure to slim down their breeding herds and sell off farms, many of which are sitting empty. But now, especially given the companies' high debt levels, the analyst said: "It's hard for them to borrow any money from the banks." That follows a 17% surge in the first nine months of this year at China's 15 big market-listed breeders even as they reported 200 billion yuan in combined net losses. China's agriculture ministry has warned of heavier losses for the sector in early 2024 than a year ago and urged pig producers to cut output.
