A gathering in North Carolina last year resulted in 10 probable cases of a parasitic infection from undercooked bear meat, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 34 people surveyed who attended the gathering, 65 percent reported eating bear meat. On November 29, 2023, the North Carolina Division of Public Health was alerted to a suspected case of trichinellosis in western North Carolina, according to the CDC. Trichinellosis caused by eating undercooked bear meat, although rare, is not unheard of in the U.S.An outbreak occurred in July 2022 during a nine-person family reunion in South Dakota after people ate kebabs made of bear meat. Most were linked to bear meat.

Walgreens said Tuesday it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years as it seeks to further downsize its footprint amid flagging sales and changing consumer behavior. Walgreens announced the closures as part of its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year earnings, which beat Wall Street's expectations. New York State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the private college located in upstate New York on Friday after receiving “a report of antisemitic remarks being posted on art canvases on campus,” police said in a news release. Brenden was located in his dorm room on Saturday and agreed to speak with state police during which he “ultimately admitted to posting the remarks,” officials said. Authorities said Hamilton College has suspended Brenden from campus pending a hearing for his dismissal from the school. LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. Speaking to CNBC last week, Citi pharmaceuticals analyst Peter Verdault said the body of evidence to support increased use of weight-loss drugs "keeps coming." The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.

UnitedHealth Group provided a 2025 profit forecast below Wall Street estimates on Tuesday, saying it expects pressure across its government-supported health insurance businesses, and its shares fell 9%. The largest U.S. health insurer forecast a profit of as much as $30 per share. UnitedHealth's third-quarter medical costs also exceeded Wall Street estimates as the insurer paid out more due to persistently high demand for healthcare services while receiving lower reimbursements on government-backed plans. The company also trimmed the higher end of its 2024 adjusted profit forecast by 25 cents to $27.75 per share. Despite the rise in medical costs, UnitedHealth beat Wall Street estimates for adjusted profit by 15 cents due to increased memberships across its businesses.

DETROIT — A growing number of Americans with auto loans owe more than their vehicles are worth, according to a report Tuesday from Edmunds.com. Upside-down car loans aren't necessarily dire on their own, but a growing number of consumers being underwater is another indication of pressure on American consumers. Edmunds reports more than one in five consumers with negative equity owe more than $10,000 on their auto loans. That includes 22% of vehicle owners with negative equity who owed $10,000 or more, while 7.5% have negative equity of more than $15,000. Consumers can counter upside-down car loans by holding onto the vehicles for longer periods.
