Multiple Secret Service officials have been put on leave for their actions leading up to and responding to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a source familiar with the decisions told NBC News. Those put on leave include the Secret Service’s special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office, whose office was responsible for coordinating the security plan with local law enforcement leading up to the rally. The source familiar with the decisions did not confirm the exact number of officials on leave and said the number may continue to grow as an internal investigation into the assassination attempt continues. RealClearPolitics was first to report that Secret Service personnel had been placed on leave. He is head of the FBI’s field office in Pittsburgh, not the Secret Service’s.

CNN —Multiple Secret Service personnel from the Pittsburgh Field Office and one member of Donald Trump’s security detail involved in the advance planning for Trump’s July 13 rally have been reassigned to administrative duties and ordered to work from home, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. The Secret Service has been under immense pressure from lawmakers to discipline or fire those involved in the preparation for the rally. “This was a Secret Service failure,” Rowe told reporters during a news conference earlier this month – a clear shift in tone from when the agency previously pointed blame on locals for their failure to keep eyes on would-be Trump assassin Thomas Crooks that day. “That roof should have been covered.”“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to investigating the decisions and actions of personnel related to the event in Butler, Pennsylvania and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. “The U.S. Secret Service holds our personnel to the highest professional standards, and any identified and substantiated violations of policy will be investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility for potential disciplinary action.

The Secret Service has assigned five agents to administrative duties as a result of its investigation into the failures that led to the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump on July 13, according to two people familiar with the situation. The agents have not been fired, and are still being paid. The Secret Service declined to comment, citing rules against publicly discussing personnel matters. Four agents placed on administrative duties are from the Pittsburgh office, and one is from Mr. Trump’s personal detail. Placement on administrative duties is different from being placed on administrative leave, which typically requires agents to turn in their badges and guns until an investigation is completed.

The pair’s first rally shortly after Walz was announced as Harris’ running mate was in Philadelphia, the commonwealth’s largest city, and they embarked on a dayslong tour of battleground states shortly after. Sunday’s tour, which is scheduled to begin in Pittsburgh, will mark the first time that Harris, Walz and their respective spouses – second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz – will appear on the campaign trail together. The campaign has 36 coordinated offices and 300 staffers in Pennsylvania, which Harris has already visited seven times this year. Seven battleground states have been the focus of more than $212 million in ad spending over that stretch, with Pennsylvania accounting for $70.6 million of that total.

And in the decade since, data shows there has not been an increase in charges brought against officers. Philip Stinson, a professor of criminal justice at Bowling Green State University, has tracked cases of police officers charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from on-duty shootings since 2005. After all, the last time a guy named Shapiro had been elected governor of Pennsylvania, he had years earlier anglicized his name to Shapp. “I’m not aware of how his position on Israel differs from the other potential vice presidents,” Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who is both Jewish and a proud progressive, told CNN. Of the VP’s choices, Shapiro is the one who stands out as the most divisive and could put a stop in everyone being on the same page,” said one Jewish Democratic operative. But I will say his attacks, this might surprise you, don’t bother me personally,” Shapiro said at the time. But calling what’s coming at Shapiro “pure antisemitism,” Rep. Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat, warned against that defensive way of thinking.

Former President Donald Trump is rushed offstage by U.S. Secret Service agents after being grazed by a bullet during a rally on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesMore than two weeks after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, federal investigators are still trying to uncover the motive of the former president’s would-be assassin. Rojek also said that Trump has agreed to sit for a victim interview with the FBI – a routine part of criminal investigations. Crooks, Rojek said, used aliases to make firearms-related purchases online, beginning in the spring of 2023. CNN has reported that text messages between law enforcement before the shooting began suggest that some officers raised Crooks’ presence at the rally more than 90 minutes before he climbed onto a roof and began firing at Trump.

CNN —Donald Trump has agreed to sit for a victim interview with the FBI, which is investigating this month’s attempted assassination, an agency official said Monday. “The interview of the former president will be consistent with any other victim interview that we do,” Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh Field Office, told reporters on a conference call Monday. The FBI wants to “get his perspective on what he observed, just like any other witness to the crime.”“It is a standard victim interview, like we would do for any other victim of crime under any other circumstances,” Rojek said. Crooks was “highly intelligent” and had a growing interest in shooting, Rojek said. But since they accessed the accounts, investigators found that the shooter was using the emails primarily to make online purchases.

CNN —Donald Trump said Friday he plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania – the place where the former president survived an assassination attempt nearly two weeks ago – for a rally that will honor slain supporter Corey Comperatore and those injured in the shooting. Trump’s right ear was bloodied, and he appeared days later at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee wearing a large white bandage over the injured ear. Trump and his allies used the Republican convention to deliver calls for unity in the wake of the assassination attempt. “What a day it will be – fight, fight, fight!” Trump said Friday in his social media post announcing the Butler rally. Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

Over three chaotic weeks, America lived through an assassination attempt, a political convention and a dramatic exit from the presidential ticket. But even — or perhaps especially — in these wild times, the political world is clinging to what it knows: lists of names and wild speculation. Although Vice President Kamala Harris has officially been a presidential candidate for less than four days, the parlor game over her running mate is well underway. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, speaking at a Monday event hosted by an asphalt manufacturer outside Pittsburgh. The governor, whose name frequently tops the roster of potential picks, proceeded to dodge 13 minutes of shouted questions about his vice-presidential aspirations — or lack thereof.

A key question after an assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump a week ago is why the Secret Service excluded from its secured zone a nearby warehouse the gunman used for his assault. But another possible flaw in the Secret Service’s plans for the campaign rally at the farm show grounds in Butler, Pa., is emerging. The protection agency expected the sizable contingent of officers from local law enforcement agencies to contain any threats outside of the secured zone but assigned almost all those officers to work inside it, according to numerous interviews with local law enforcement and municipal officials. More specifically, the local law enforcement officials say that none of them were assigned to safeguard the complex of warehouses just north of the farm show grounds. The gunman was able to use the roof of the warehouse closest to the stage — about 450 feet from the podium — from which to shoot.

For Thomas Crooks, the suburban Pittsburgh nursing home where he served meals and washed dishes for $16 an hour was another solitary corner of a nearly invisible life. He was polite but distant, a former co-worker said, ate lunch alone in the break room and rarely spoke with anyone. But as western Pennsylvania geared up last week for the boisterous spectacle of hosting a rally for former President Donald J. Trump, Mr. Crooks approached his bosses with a request, law enforcement officials said: He wanted to take Saturday off. It was one of the few hints to emerge so far that the 20-year-old engineering sciences graduate was planning to become a political assassin. Mr. Trump suffered an injury to his ear, and three spectators were wounded, one of them fatally.

That suggests Crooks may have been looking to carry out a high-profile shooting, and the Trump event’s proximity and timing offered the most accessible opportunity, federal officials have speculated.
