The wildfires that leveled the town of Lahaina on Maui wiped out shops, restaurants and a hotel built more than century ago, burning across some of the most spectacular and wealthiest enclaves of the state. High-profile billionaires including Oprah Winfrey, Peter Thiel and Jeff Bezos all have homes on Maui. But the deadly blaze also destroyed something less visible yet vital to this island’s economic survival: modest houses and apartments where many workers running Maui’s booming tourism industry lived. The destruction in Lahaina has highlighted Maui’s longstanding challenge with housing for the people who work in its hotels and on its golf courses, without whom the island could not function as a beloved destination for visitors from around the world. “We already had a housing crisis,’’ said Leslie Wilkins, president of the Maui Economic Development Board.

Goldman Sachs is having an identity crisis

I never thought I'd write this but … I miss the old Goldman Sachs. That was the voice of Goldman Sachs 2009 — the adamantine firm that managed to make its way through the crisis relatively unscathed. This sort of dry humor worked back then, but for today's Goldman Sachs, the joke just doesn't hit the same way. Van Praag — who was once dubbed "Goldman Sachs' Rococo PR prince" by The Observer — left the firm in 2012. It would be nice to see the old Goldman Sachs ferocity is still out there somewhere, even if it's not on Wall Street.

Amazon, the United States' second-largest employer, will now offer fertility and family planning services to employees through a partnership with Maven Clinic. The free offering will be available to more than 1 million eligible Amazon employees spread across 50 countries outside of the U.S. and Canada. The addition of Amazon to the company's partnership portfolio means an increase of about 7% in patients under Maven's care. The continued challenges around reproductive health care in the U.S. highlights why there has been strong corporate interest in partnering with Maven. What's more, a survey by Maven revealed that 71% of companies are considering adding or have added reproductive health benefits in the wake of the decision.

Across an eventful career Ms. Casey—a former editor in chief of O, the Oprah Magazine—has researched and written books about big waves, great white sharks, dolphins and, in “The Underworld,” the oceanic depths. She dedicates her latest book to “those who love the ocean,” which she clearly does, writing about it with passion, knowledge and insights from personal experience.

But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

Threads, the new social app from Meta, had a fast start this month when it racked up 100 million downloads in less than a week. We compiled a list of 15 of some of the most-followed celebrities and high-profile figures on Twitter who joined Threads, including Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Britney Spears, Shakira and Oprah Winfrey. Then we compared their activity on Twitter with their activity on Threads every day since July 5, when Threads was released. We also looked at what they did on Instagram, which is owned by Meta and developed Threads. What we found is just an early snapshot, but it may provide some clues to where Threads is headed.

Has Zuckerberg invented a Twitter killer? Meta’s new social network had already racked up more than 10 million sign-ups within seven hours of its launch, and attracted celebrities and politicians like Oprah Winfrey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York. But the presence of big-name advertisers such as Procter & Gamble and Ford points to the bigger commercial stakes in the fight between Mark Zuckerberg’s new platform and Elon Musk’s Twitter. Meta is billing Threads as a “friendly” forum, but the social media giant is gunning for the blue bird. Advertisers are watching closely, even if they can’t buy ads there yet.

IGTV, which launched in 2018 with its own separate app, was sunset in 2022 and its app is now defunct.
