New York CNN —A major ad industry group is shutting down, days after Elon Musk-owned X filed a lawsuit that claimed the group illegally conspired to boycott advertising on his platform. The end of GARM marks a temporary victory for Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, even though a judge hasn’t made a ruling yet. “Everyone can see that advertising on X is a treacherous business relationship for advertisers,” they said. Following that, brands’ faced issues where their ads were placed next to illegal or harmful content, the group said in a statement. GARM said its group reduced such ads from 6.1% in 2020 to 1.7% in 2023.

New York CNN —Google, X and Discord are among a group of tech giants that could be doing more to address the rising threat of non-consensual explicit images online, according to a letter that a group of senators sent to the companies Friday. The letter criticizes nearly a dozen tech firms for their lack of participation in two programs that make it easier for people to request the removal of non-consensual explicit images and videos from the internet. The letter was spearheaded by Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Sen. Rick Scott, and co-signed by ten other senators. Most of the companies named in the letter have policies against the creation or sharing of non-consensual, explicit images, and in some cases offer their own ways for users to report or request the removal of such content. The fight to address non-consensual explicit images and deepfakes has received rare bipartisan support.

New York CNN —Paramount Global, the storied media conglomerate, announced Thursday it will lay off 15% of its US staff and write down $6 billion in value of its cable television networks as it prepares to merge with Skydance Media. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, TNT, HGTV and other cable networks, posted a $9.1 billion write down on its television business. “And this impairment acknowledges this.”The recent turbulence in the media business extends well beyond the traditional television industry, affecting digital news outlets and print publications. As profits in the television business have eroded away, Paramount has been hit particularly hard. Paramount said its streaming service Paramount+ posted a $26 million profit after losing $424 million during the same period last year and said it expects subscriber growth in the second half of the year.

New York CNN —OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence,” because of its new human-sounding voice mode. ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool. Some people are already forming what they describe as romantic relationships with AI chatbots, prompting concern from relationship experts. For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building AI “safely,” and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.

Why Jay Powell refuses to be bullied by Wall Street
  + stars: | 2024-08-08 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
The whole episode underscored a fundamental tension between the Fed, which is focused on economic stability, and Wall Street, which is focused on profit. The message from Powell and other policymakers is clear: We won’t be strong-armed by Wall Street. The BOJ’s deputy governor, Shinichi Uchida, citing volatility in financial markets, said the bank would not raise its policy interest rate as long as markets remain unstable. Powell (formerly in finance, hazel eyes, great ties) appears to have a real opportunity to Volcker it up even more in the coming weeks. That gives Wall Street plenty of time to sit in the corner and deal with its feelings.

New York CNN —US stocks surged Thursday after new data on the labor market suggested that the economy may not be headed into the downward spiral that traders feared. First-time claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to 233,000 from the prior week’s upwardly revised total of 250,000, according to Department of Labor data released Thursday. “Anything in that range tends to suggest a fairly healthy labor market,” wrote economist Joseph Brusuelas on X Thursday morning. Weekly jobless claims data can be highly volatile and is frequently revised. It’s a reflection of how quickly the traditional television business is deteriorating and imperiling companies such as WBD, which rely on linear channels for the bulk of their revenue. The one bright spot in the legacy television business has been live sports programming, which continues to draw high viewership even as cable cancelations mount. To be fair, WBD is not the only once-high flying legacy media behemoth struggling to find its footing in a shifting landscape upended by the Netflixrevolution. Speaking candidly to investors on the company’s earnings call Wednesday, Zaslav acknowledged the dire reality of the television business. “It’s fair to say that even two years ago, market valuations and prevailing conditions for legacy media companies were quite different than they are today,” Zaslav said.

The new CEO said in a memo to staff Thursday that he decided to work 2,300 miles from the company’s current corporate offices in Arlington, Virginia, to help restore trust in the company’s commercial aircraft business. A Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is shown on the assembly line at the Boeing facility in Renton, Washington. The company said it had no comment whether it is considering moving its entire headquarters back to Seattle along with Ortberg. Boeing executives admitted there they still don’t know how the plane in the door plug blowout left Boeing’s Renton, Washington factory without the four bolts needed to keep the door plug in place.

When you hear commentators talking this week about the “yen carry trade” or the “great unwind,” they’re referring to a popular trading strategy that is, suddenly, blowing up in investors’ faces. The carry trade, explainedPut simply: A carry trade is when you borrow money in a place where interest rates are low and use it to invest elsewhere in assets that generate some kind of return. “That is bonkers.”The yen carry trade proved especially popular in the last four years, because Japan was the only major economy in the world offering essentially free money. The carry trade relies on borrowing, which means it’s a leveraged position. “The carry trade unwind… is somewhere between 50%-60% complete.”In other words: Buckle up, and don’t panic.

Disney may have a parks problem
  + stars: | 2024-08-07 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Disney Parks are the latest business to face slowing consumer demand in the face of higher prices. Disney’s parks business underperformed expectations and profit fell somewhat last quarter. It’s not just Disney that’s seeing a pullback — Bank of America Institute reported credit card transactions on travel ticked down in June. Disney’s domestic parks and international parks and cruises, though, are seeing different results: Disney’s international parks had increases in attendance and more rooms booked. The company noted that attendance at the parks was comparable to this time last year and spending per guest was up.

But if you’re investing in a 401(k), daily market dramas are no reason to take dramatic actions with your portfolio. There will be days when the market is up and days when it’s down. What’s more, Ornstein said, “Typically, the best days in the market follow the worst days.” Over the past 20 years, he added, if you had stayed fully invested in the market throughout, your average annual returns would be nearly twice what they would have been had you missed the 10 best days. Say you set up a portfolio of 70% stocks and 30% bonds but now it’s morphed into a 60/40 portfolio. And since 1960 there have been far more positive annual returns on the S&P 500 than negative ones, Smith said.

A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. That uncertainty about the future of US EV incentives prompted automakers to reconsider their earlier EV plans.

Gross domestic product for the second quarter of this year came in better than expected, with the economy growing at an annualized rate close to 3%. Republicans and DemocratsIt’s not fair to lay all the blame for the state of the economy on one party when both have contributed. While neither can be fully blamed for the pandemic itself, their handling of it has had significant ramifications for the economy. Oh, here’s an idea, let’s just leave interest rates really high.” That’s not to say that politicians necessarily wanted to make Americans’ lives more difficult either. Yet all the calculus they perform to determine what the ideal interest rate level is at any given point in time is complicated by fiscal spending that’s entirely out of their control.

“The impact on Delta passengers was disastrous,” the lawsuit said. In other cases, it would only offer partial reimbursement if passengers signed a waiver releasing the airline of any legal claims. On Monday afternoon, a federal judge ruled that Google violated US antitrust law with its search business. And despite yesterday’s decline, which already appears to have begun reversing, shares of Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google and Nvidia all remain up strongly year-to-date. Anything that threatens its market share could also put that core business — already facing competitive threats from emerging AI tools — at risk. It could also embolden lawmakers who have been looking to crack down further on the power of Big Tech. “This ruling will inspire short-term confidence for DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and other Google Search competitors.

New York CNN —Elon Musk’s X has accused a group of major advertisers of antitrust violations in a new lawsuit claiming the group conspired to “boycott” advertising on the platform. The lawsuit claims an influential ad industry group organized “to collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising from Twitter” because the group was concerned that the platform had deviated from brand safety standards after Musk’s acquisition in late 2022. The lawsuit is the latest effort by X to revive its core ad business, which has tanked since Musk’s takeover. It’s not the first time X has filed a lawsuit related to its declining ad business.
