Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

President Biden will address the nation about the U.S. response to the Israel-Hamas conflict and Russia's war in Ukraine, the White House said. The remarks from the Oval Office will be delivered at 8 p.m. The conflict in the Middle East has drawn attention away from the war in Ukraine, now in its second year and also a Biden administration priority. Biden is expected to seek a roughly $100 billion aid package from Congress for Israel, Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific (including Taiwan) and border security. In an interview with CBS' 60 Minutes aired Sunday, Biden said the U.S. was capable of responding to the conflicts in Israel and Ukraine at the same time.

To underscore the pattern, the Pentagon released previously nonpublic photos and videos of Chinese fighter jets intercepting US aircraft flying in international airspace. The images, which date back to January 2022, show Chinese fighter jets getting dangerously close to US military jets in international airspace in an attempt to “intimidate” them, the Pentagon said in a statement about the incidents. Some of the Chinese fighter jets came within 20 feet of the US planes, the videos show. CNN —A former US Army sergeant who allegedly lived in China for several years was arrested Friday on charges of keeping national defense information and attempting to share it with the Chinese government. If convicted, the two charges Schmidt faces – attempting to deliver national defense information and retention of national defense information – each carry up to 10 years in prison. WASHINGTON — A former U.S. Army sergeant was arrested on Friday for allegedly attempting to provide classified national security information to China, the Department of Justice said. Schmidt allegedly initiated efforts to provide Chinese intelligence with U.S. defense information after separating from the military in January 2020, the department said. He was part of the 109th Military Intelligence Battalion, where he had access to information classified "Secret" and "Top Secret," the DOJ said. He also is accused of reaching out to both the Chinese Consulate in Turkey and the Chinese security services via email to offer the information.
