That’s why the biggest theater chains in the United States and Canada have a $2.2 billion plan to bring them back. Large chains are also facing competition from luxury theaters offering an enhanced viewing experience, like IPIC Theaters and Alamo Drafthouse. Better air conditioning, new signs and revamped carpeting are also included in the plan. In July, Regal announced it would spend $250 million to remodel its 400 locations following its parent company’s exit from bankruptcy. The $2.2 billion investment shows “no better reflection of confidence” about movie theaters’ future, Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, told CNN.

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected on Monday to propose prohibiting Chinese software and hardware in connected and autonomous vehicles on U.S. roads due to national security concerns, sources told Reuters. The Biden administration has raised serious concerns about the collection of data by Chinese companies on U.S. drivers and infrastructure as well as the potential foreign manipulation of connected vehicles. The proposed regulation would ban the import and sale of vehicles from China with key communications or automated driving system software or hardware. The department plans to give the public 30 days to comment before any finalization of the rules, the sources said, adding that the department plans to propose making the prohibitions on software effective in the 2027 model year and the prohibitions on hardware would take effect in January 2029. The Commerce Department declined to comment on Saturday.

Vice President Kamala Harris substantially outraised and outspent former President Donald Trump in August, ending the month with more cash to fund her final sprint to the November election, according to new filings from the Federal Election Commission. The Harris campaign raised over $189 million in August, more than quadruple the $44 million sum that the Trump campaign brought in. The Harris campaign announced earlier this month a total $361 million August haul from campaign donations joint with the Democratic National Committee and fundraising committees. That dwarfed the $130 million raised between the Trump campaign and its joint fundraising committees. The Harris campaign on Saturday accepted an invitation from CNN to hold a second debate on Oct. 23, but Trump has so far staunchly maintained that he will not do a rematch.

That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

Childcare is often top of mind for parents — and it might also be a deciding factor at the ballot box. Many parents just don't have the luxury of relying on family to provide childcare, Drew said, and they shouldn't have to. But these results were soon contradicted by tests a few years later that sampled Hauser’s hair. Those results showed that Hauser’s mtDNA was a close match to that of the Badens, contradicting the findings from Munich. The Harris campaign also dramatically outspent the Trump campaign in August, burning through about $174 million. By comparison, Trump’s campaign spent just $61 million last month, with the lion’s share – more than $47 million – going toward media buys. The Trump and Harris campaigns are aligned with an array of committees that file disclosure reports on a separate schedule. The Trump campaign, as CNN has previously reported, has opted to outsource much of its ground game operation to outside organizations. The super PAC spent more than $77 million in August, including nearly $62 million on independent expenditures to benefit the vice president’s campaign.

The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.
