The future of AI is set to be "spiritually, politically, and economically" corrosive, Lanier said. He noted that people building AI tech should let go of sci-fi wish fulfillment. He noted that, while this year has been the "year of AI," next year the world is going to be "flooded, flooded with AI-generated music." A deluge of generative AI content, from simple search prompts to eerie deepfakes, is now up for broad government regulation. In addition to AI-generated content nixing human connection found through creative works and causing an eventual collapse of the creative economy, Lanier said AI-generated content that can be perfected and customized also undermines peoples' "sense of reality.

The two companies had challenged the lower court's decision that they may owe copyright damages that accrued prior to three years before plaintiff Sherman Nealy sued them. Nealy has argued that his Miami record label Music Specialist owns the rights to the 1984 song "Jam the Box" by Tony Butler, also known as Pretty Tony. Nealy said he did not learn of the alleged copyright violations until 2016, and requested damages for copyright infringement that he said started as early as 2008. Circuit Court of Appeals limited copyright damages to the three-year period before a lawsuit is filed. The case has drawn interest from music industry trade groups including the Recording Industry Association of America and National Music Publishers' Association, which also encouraged the court to take up the case.

Starting in the mid-2010s, the success of streaming services like Spotify, Tencent and Apple Music led the music industry into a period of sustained revenue growth for the first time since 1999, the year Napster launched. Despite placing her previous documentaries and concert films on streaming services in the past, the iconic pop star opted to deliver her Eras Tour film directly to cinemagoers this October. Of course, the theater company will generate significantly more than that in concession sales, perhaps the real upside to Swift's film release. "Taylor Swift, being a cultural powerhouse and shaper of new business models, may have a hand in bringing back the old-school style concert film." Swift's concert film seems destined to overtake the current record holder for a theatrical concert film.
