Wellington, New Zealand CNN —In a closely-fought battle and rematch of the 2019 World Cup final, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) and the Netherlands – two of the world’s top teams – came to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The banner hangs just beneath the central staircase of the elegant hotel that has been taken over by the France women’s national team for the World Cup. The motivational words emblazoned across it are typical of the type of positive messaging teams rally around before major sporting tournaments. But for this French squad, and for Renard, its well-traveled coach, the words carry extra significance after a period many on the team would prefer to forget. “Only team spirit,” it reads, “can make you realize your dreams.”Renard used the phrase the first time he met the French squad earlier this year, only months before the World Cup. “We were missing unity," Renard said in an interview on a sunny terrace in front of the team’s base camp last week.

On the other side of the world in Auckland, the USWNT took down World Cup newcomer Vietnam 3-0. It was nonsense to worry about what to watch or whether Messi would upstage the women. MLS chief Don Garber, for one, says he’s not worried about the impact Saudi money could have on the ability of the MLS to expand into markets outside the US, especially as it failed to win Messi. Friday may have been the first time in his life that Messi was someone else’s opening act. The USWNT did what was expected, beating a lesser team in Vietnam, but they also have a lot of work in front of them.

CNN —The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) kicked off their Women’s World Cup campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Vietnam. A brace from US soccer’s newest superstar Sophia Smith and a late goal from Lindsey Horan was enough to give the defending champion a dream start as it begins a historic World Cup campaign. The USWNT are chasing a third World Cup in a row and could not have asked for a better start, dominating proceedings from the outset before Smith opened the scoring just 14 minutes into her World Cup debut. The Portland Thorns forward squeezed the ball into the net – albeit with a much scrappier effort than her opener. As chances came and went for the USWNT, it took more brilliant work from Smith to extend the lead.

Anson Dorrance knew he was a pioneer during his eight years as head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). Any understanding of how and why the USWNT is women’s soccer’s dominant force, a four-time Women’s World Cup winner and favorite to win the next edition currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, must start with Dorrance, the groundbreaker and the bricklayer. Five years later, the first Women’s World Cup was held in China – not that it was initially labelled a World Cup as world governing body FIFA worried it might not be a success. A third-placed finish followed at the 1995 Women’s World Cup, and then came the Atlanta Olympics a year later. The success of 1999 would lead to the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA).

CNN —The 2023 Women’s World Cup Championship begins this week in Australia and New Zealand, and will be, for all appearances, a victory lap for gender equality in sports. Additionally, not all the physiological evidence lines up in men’s favor when it comes to athletic performance. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the most popular sports worldwide are those that also most exaggerate underlying gender differences. Would the gap in athletic performance persist if girls truly had the same opportunities as boys to play at all levels? In 2023, as we enjoy the spectacle of mega-athletes like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, it’s time to rethink our stories about gender and athletic performance.
