Mayor Eric Adams said on Wednesday that New York City had made progress in helping homeless people who are severely mentally ill get connected to treatment and housing. The mayor has made addressing mental illness a priority after a series of random, high-profile attacks involving homeless people. On Wednesday, a year after announcing a plan to involuntarily hospitalize mentally ill homeless people who appeared to be unable to care for themselves, he said at a news conference that the city was seeing results. “We made a commitment to New Yorkers that the days of ignoring the mental health crisis playing out on our streets were over,” Mr. Adams said. “We will not abandon New Yorkers in need.”The mayor said the city had, on average, involuntarily hospitalized 137 homeless mentally ill people a week since May.

Homeless people and their advocates say the sweeps are cruel and a waste of taxpayer money. The AP submitted data requests to 30 U.S. cities regarding encampment sweeps and received at least partial responses from about half. “Unfortunately, it’s becoming a way of life, and that is 100% incorrect.”For homeless people, sweeps can be traumatizing. But never an end solution.”There are many reasons why someone might reject shelter, say homeless people and their advocates. We’re walking around saying, ‘What do you need?’”In Portland, the encampment dismantled in July was cleared again, in September and November.

Mayor Eric Adams of New York said on Tuesday that the 25-year-old woman he had chosen to manage his political fund-raising was no longer working in that role, weeks after a search of her home by the F.B.I. revealed a federal investigation into his campaign and plunged his administration into turmoil. The announcement by Mr. Adams was something of a reversal: He had previously said he had “full confidence” in the fund-raiser, Brianna Suggs, adding that she was qualified for the job and that he would love for her to remain on his team. At his weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Mr. Adams declined to explain the reasons for the change, saying as he often does that he would not discuss private conversations. “She is no longer doing fund-raising for the campaign,” Mr. Adams said, in response to a question from a reporter.

But on Monday, Mr. Banks said there had been “many rumors and misinformation” about what happened. “Violence, hate and disorder have no place in our schools,” Mr. Banks, who himself attended Hillcrest in the 1970s, said at a news conference. “They feel a kindred spirit with the folks of the Palestinian community,” Mr. Banks said, adding that the “notion that these kids are radicalized” was irresponsible. On Monday, Mr. Banks and other city leaders attempted to quell the mounting online backlash against students at the school. Some Hillcrest students had openly discussed their plans in the lead-up to Nov. 20, the two teachers said.

CNN —A former aide to ex-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who previously claimed Cuomo groped her breast, is filing a lawsuit against him alleging sexual harassment and abuse, according to a summons filed this week. Commisso’s claims are provably false, which is why the Albany District Attorney dismissed the case two years ago after a thorough investigation,” Cuomo attorney Rita Glavin told CNN in a statement. The report triggered the eventual resignation of Cuomo, which he announced on August 10, 2021, a week after it was released. According to the state’s report, Commisso told investigators Cuomo grabbed her buttocks during hugs and a photo. Commisso claims she was demoted by the then lieutenant governor, now governor, Kathy Hochul, removed from the front office, and moved to the “demeaning task of answering telephones” for Hochul’s office, according to the document.

After years of heady spending, the budget cuts announced by Mayor Eric Adams last week hit New York City like a punch to the gut: Most libraries would be closed on Sundays. So would efforts to improve New York’s notoriously dirty streets and keep rats at bay. The brutal cuts come as Mr. Adams scrambles to fill a $7 billion budget deficit in the next year. The Citizens Budget Commission, a nonpartisan watchdog group, estimates that the budget gap could be significantly higher, closer to $10.6 billion. At the same time, thousands of migrants began arriving at the city’s doorstep in need of shelter.

War in the Middle East has prompted officials to take extra precautions at airports and shopping malls across the United States and along the route of New York's signature Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A quintessential American rite, Thanksgiving brings together family and friends for turkey dinner and watching the parade and American football on TV. Many of them wore tops emblazoned with "Stop the Genocide" as they unfurled a banner saying "Free Palestine," "Land Back" and "Genocide Then, Genocide Now." For many Native Americans, however, Thanksgiving is a day of dark reflection about the genocide that followed.

NEW YORK—With the skyscrapers of Wall Street behind him, Eric Adams watched earlier this week as an electric passenger aircraft circled Manhattan’s downtown heliport. He shared his dream that the city would be a hub of the new technology and waxed about the prospect of futuristic new jobs. Then reality came back: a question about whether anyone else on his team had their phones seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as happened to Adams this month. “We’re talking about helicopters!” the mayor spat back, ignoring the question as he spun around and turned his eyes to the sky.

Over 100,000 Americans now die from drug overdoses annually. Upon taking office, Mayor Eric Adams, Mr. de Blasio’s successor, has continued to support the sites’ work. Some neighbors, politicians and media have claimed that the centers — one in East Harlem and one in Washington Heights — are increasing crime and public drug use in neighborhoods already burdened with poverty. But an important new study published this week refutes these claims. It shows that violent and property crime rates near the two overdose prevention centers (sometimes referred to as safe injection or safe consumption sites) did not increase any more than crime in similar neighborhoods elsewhere in the city.

A major federal corruption investigation into Mayor Eric Adams’s fund-raising is examining whether his campaign conspired with members of the Turkish government to receive illegal donations. Mr. Adams, a Democrat in his second year in office, has longstanding ties to Turkey. The mayor has said that he met the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, when he was Brooklyn borough president, and that he has visited the country at least six times. Federal authorities raided the home of Mr. Adams’s chief fund-raiser on Nov. 2, and then seized at least two cellphones and an iPad from Mr. Adams himself. Mr. Adams has defended his links to Turkey, arguing that they were part of his outreach to immigrant communities that have not always received attention from City Hall.

NEW YORK (AP) — Amtrak service north of New York City was disrupted Monday because of structural issues with a parking garage that's over the tracks on Manhattan's west side, officials said. Service between the city and the Croton-Harmon station in Westchester County was halted Sunday after structural problems were discovered at the parking garage on West 51st Street. Amtrak said passengers traveling between New York City and Croton-Harmon could take Metro-North, which is honoring Amtrak tickets. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday that city engineers were dispatched to the parking garage to assess the situation. New York City officials stepped up the inspection of parking garages after a three-story parking structure in lower Manhattan collapsed in April, killing one worker, injuring several others and crushing dozens of cars.
