PUEBLA, Mexico — It is, according to UNESCO, the oldest public library in the Americas, tucked away from the street front at a cultural center in the historic heart of this Mexican city. “Everything that was imagined at that time is in the library,” said Juan Fernández del Campo, the library’s current manager. Palafox’s passion for books is evident in a quote from him, written on a mosaic outside the library. This was not the time for Mexico to raise its wings toward freedom of thought,” the library manager said. The library reopened in 2002; two years later it was added by UNESCO to its Memory of the World Register.
In his new book, William Shatner wrote that going to space "felt like a funeral." The "Star Trek" actor went to space with Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin last October, when he was 90. It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered." "My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral," he wrote. Chris Boshuizen, a former NASA engineer; Glen de Vries, a healthcare entrepreneur; and Audrey Powers, a Blue Origin executive, joined Shatner aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket for the spaceflight.
LONDON — Even for a country that prides itself on pageantry, it was an occasion of majestic splendor. Yet, the ceremony and solemnity of the state funeral are already giving way to an unavoidable realization: The grandeur that marked Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and was seen by billions across the world is not the reality of the country that most woke up to Tuesday. Britain is facing myriad crises, from spiraling costs for food and fuel to an energy crunch that could cause blackouts this winter. “This has been 10 days of Britain being in suspended animation,” said Scott Lucas, a professor of American studies at England’s University of Birmingham who specializes in British and American politics. “The Brits are going to get an immediate shock and an immediate dose of reality.”
LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 19: The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II passes through Horse Guards Parade during the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on September 19, 2022 in London, England. Chris J Ratcliffe/Pool via REUTERSWESTMINSTER ABBEY, London, Sept 19 (Reuters) - As the last notes of the poignant Last Post trumpet fanfare echoed around the vaulted ceilings of London's historic Westminster Abbey, a deep silence pervaded the majestic gothic cathedral. World leaders and dignitaries from about 200 countries and territories, some openly hostile to each other, united briefly for two minutes of silence in a show of tribute at the state funeral of Britain's Queen Elizabeth. Some members of Queen Elizabeth's family had pain etched on their faces as they followed her coffin into the Abbey. For the leaders of those realms, Monday's funeral was likely to represent not just a farewell to Elizabeth but a goodbye to monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth's coffin reaches Windsor chapel ahead of burial

The hearse carrying the coffin of Britain's Queen Elizabeth is escorted along the Long Walk towards Windsor castle in the funeral procession, on the day of the state funeral and burial of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, in Windsor, Britain, September 19, 2022Later the attention switched to St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, where some 800 guests attended a committal service ahead of her burial. The coffin entered to lines of scripture set to a score used at every state funeral since the early 18th century. The casket was taken from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch and transferred to a hearse to travel to Windsor, where more big crowds waited patiently. Among the crowds who came from around Britain and beyond, people climbed lampposts and stood on barriers and ladders to catch a glimpse of the royal procession. "I've been coming to Windsor for 50 years now," said Baldev Bhakar, 72, a jeweler from the nearby town of Slough, speaking outside Windsor Castle.
But I was deeply moved Monday by the TV image of Queen Elizabeth’s coffin being lowered into its vault at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor with the queen’s bagpiper playing her to rest. The queen and TV came of age together. Now, I wonder if her funeral will be one of the media events that historian use to mark the end of the TV era. But watching them on iPhone did not do justice to the majestic and panoramic imagery being offered on TV screens. Of all the anchors and analysts, CNN’s anchor Anderson Cooper seemed the most plugged into the rhythms of the day’s events.
(CNN) Broadway's longest-running show, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," will play its final five months before closing its doors for good, a spokesperson for the show told CNN Friday. The final performance will take place on Saturday, February, 18, 2023, at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, Michael Borowski of The Publicity Office said in an email. Prior to the Broadway show's conclusion, "Phantom" will celebrate its 35th anniversary on January 26 with director Seth Sklar-Heyn at the helm, Borowski said. Ticket sales had slowed for Broadway shows during the pandemic and "Phantom" was no exception, recently dropping from 255,000 weekly attendees in May to about 180,000 attendees in September, according to The Broadway League. The show's flagship London production will celebrate its 36th year on October 9 and the recently premiered Melbourne version will likewise continue.
“Phantom” is a staple within the Broadway world with over 70 major theater wins and 13,733 performances since its debut in 1988. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux and was originally directed by Harold Prince. “Phantom” tells the 19th century story of aspiring opera singer Christine Daae who is taught by the mysterious Phantom to hone her vocal skills. However, things take a dark turn when the Phantom chooses Christine as his muse, and she falls in love with an arts benefactor named Raoul. CNN —Out in the hot, shimmering desert sands of western Qatar, something alien, colossal and very weird looms over the horizon. The steel plates, located across a kilometer of desert on Qatar’s Zekreet Peninsula, are the work of Richard Serra, an American artist known for creating imposing metalwork sculptures. While hardly overrun, “East-West/West-East” has become a place of occasional pilgrimage for locals, tourists and art devotees alike, adding to a roster of Qatar desert activities that includes dune bashing, Bedouin camps and camel treks. While there’s plenty to take in at “East-West/West-East,” the artwork isn’t the only attraction the Zekreet Peninsula has to offer. Somewhat more mysterious – in appearance at least – are the “desert mushrooms” of Qatar, another few kilometers along the peninsula.

A glimpse of life on the reservation

Story highlights German photographer Felix von der Osten spent time at an Indian reservation in Montana He set out to show the "beauty and richness of the culture" and arouse curiosity in viewersCNN —Growing up in Germany, everything Felix von der Osten learned about Native Americans came from the books of 19th-century German writer Karl May. “I wanted to show a slice of life (through) the beauty and richness of the culture,” he said. His American girlfriend had distant relatives living there who supported his idea and invited him to stay in their home. With their approval, he spent his first week walking around without his camera, introducing himself to tribal members and building relationships. Through conversations with tribal members, he also learned of the harsh realities of life on the reservation, from the difficulties youths face in pursuing educational opportunities to the drug and alcohol addiction killing some members.

Lincoln’s Vision of Democracy

The news of the great battle at Gettysburg came to Abraham Lincoln by fits and starts. But when it was finally confirmed on the morning of July 4, 1863, that Robert E. Lee ’s Confederate army had been forced to retreat, the tidings couldn’t have been more welcome. To a crowd of well-wishers who gathered outside the White House, Lincoln exulted that “the cohorts of those who opposed the declaration that all men are created equal” had at that great battle “ ‘turned tail’ and run.”Before month’s end, plans were developing to create a majestic national cemetery in Gettysburg for the more than 3,300 Union dead, with dedication ceremonies to take place on Nov. 19. The featured orator would be the august Edward Everett . But for the actual dedication sentences—a “few, appropriate remarks,” as David Wills described them in his invitation letter—the organizers turned to Lincoln.
