CNN —A jury has awarded climate scientist Michael Mann more than $1 million in a defamation lawsuit he brought against a former scholar and a media personality who lampooned Mann’s work. A jury in the Washington, DC, Superior Court civil case awarded Mann $1 million in punitive damages and a dollar from each defendant in compensatory damages. Mann had also sued the National Review and Competitive Enterprise Institute. Mann intends to appeal that 2021 decision, which said the Competitive Enterprise Institute and National Review could not be held liable for defamation, according to multiple reports. However, Mann’s is the latest in a recent string of defamation trial victories for plaintiffs or large settlements – most notably including E. Jean Carrol’s $83.3 million verdict against former President Donald Trump.

How damaging are all the renewed questions about age and mental acuity going to be? One Democratic member of the House responded to being told of the questions about age and memory raised in the report with a morbid laugh and sullen shake of the head. Inside the White House and among Biden’s reelection campaign staff, the tension is constant. Biden aides also feel themselves that this hasn’t been enough. Most importantly, they reflect what Biden aides have learned from experience: Nothing combats questions about the president’s competence as much as people seeing him in action.

CNN —A federal judge formally ordered Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll, endorsing the jury’s verdict from the defamation trial last month. This will be the second judgment Carroll has won against Trump. Last May, Trump appealed the verdict to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not yet heard arguments. In the current case, a jury found Carroll should receive $83.3 million in damages to repair her reputation, to compensate her, and to punish Trump. The judge found that the prior verdict should carry over to statements at issue in the last trial since they were similar.

For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George. Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it. Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle.

Now, the US Supreme Court faces its greatest test so far from the former president. How Trump works the refsEven though Trump is not expected to attend Thursday’s oral arguments at the Supreme Court, the justices know what’s coming. According to a CNN poll conducted late last month, 49% of Republicans say Trump did nothing wrong following the last presidential election. “I’m not happy with the Supreme Court. “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” Roberts wrote in an extraordinary statement that did not name Trump, but clearly had him in mind.

CNN —A federal judge denied Donald Trump’s motions for a mistrial in the defamation case brought by columnist E. Jean Carroll saying the former president’s arguments had no “merit” and are “entirely pointless.”Judge Lewis Kaplan denied Trump’s motions from the bench during the civil trial and said a written order would follow. In the written order on Wednesday, the judge said granting a request for a mistrial “would have been entirely pointless” because it would only mean that the case would start over. Trump argued for a mistrial when Carroll admitted she deleted some death threats she received immediately after her allegations against Trump became public in June 2019. He also denied Trump’s request for sanctions and criticized Trump’s attorneys for first making the motion for a mistrial in front of the jury during Carroll’s cross-examination when they had known about the deletion of messages for over a year. The jury hearing the case awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages.

NEW YORK (AP) — The federal judge who presided over the jury trial that resulted in an $83 million award to writer E. Jean Carroll for her defamation claims against former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his rejection of his lawyer's unusual midtrial mistrial request was not a close call. Habba said a mistrial was in order because Carroll, 80, was confessing that she destroyed evidence that should have been preserved for trial. Out of the presence of the jury one day, the judge even threatened to jail her if she didn't stop talking. The $83.3 million award by the jury two weeks ago came over statements Trump made while he was president. The jury rejected Carroll's rape claim, though the judge later said what the jury found would be considered rape in other jurisdictions.

In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president. To the Editor:Jessica Bennett’s compelling essay “The Audacity of E. Jean Carroll” (Opinion, Feb. 4) vividly captures the events in that New York courtroom last month. It is truly astonishing to me, even in the wake of the verdict, that the former president continues to command a substantial base of support, especially among women of all ages. I find it perplexing how women of integrity can seemingly compartmentalize his abhorrent behavior and still cast their ballots for a notorious womanizer. What’s even more disturbing is his public trashing, maligning and dehumanizing of anyone who dares to hold him accountable. Remarkably, the women who support him believe his lies, many asserting that his policies trump his behavior.

The day before awarding Carroll $83.3 million in damages — Trump's penance for calling her a lying "whack job" when she told the world he'd sexually assaulted her — jurors heard, firsthand, how rich he was. AdvertisementTrump's "I'm rich" boasts hurt him in both the Carroll verdict and the upcoming fraud trial verdict, Snell said. Punitive damages in defamation cases are supposed to have a deterrent effect, to stop the defamation from happening again. AdvertisementTrump's wealth also illustrates why the jury imposed enormous punitive damages compared to the $18.3 million to compensate Carroll. The Carroll jury also heard Trump boast about the value of his "brand."

The results will either buttress Trump's claims of massive wealth or expose him as a poseur. The biggest potential judgment comes in the civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The court has already determined that Trump committed fraud by securing loans through false financial statements – including inflating the value of his properties. The fraud case is more complicated, experts say, since there was no clear victim identified. Judge Arthur Engoron, who will deliver the judgment on financial damages as well as the fate of Trump's businesses in New York, hasn't been sympathetic to the idea that Trump's fraud caused no harm.

Haley laid out a stinging character study of the former president in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. Grouping Trump with President Joe Biden, she said it was “absurd” that the country would be stuck with two 80-year-old candidates. In recent campaign events, Haley has also questioned Trump’s morality and capacity to tell right from wrong. Judge postpones Trump D.C. election trial pending appeal

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to his supporters as he departs for his second civil trial after E. Jean Carroll accused Trump of raping her decades ago, outside Trump Tower in the Manhattan borough of New York City on Jan. 26, 2024. A judge on Friday indefinitely postponed the election interference criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, which was scheduled to start March 4 in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. That appeal has yet to be decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Trump is certain to ask the Supreme Court to hear his appeal if the circuit court rules against him, as is special counsel Jack Smith if the appeals court rules against that prosecutor. If the Supreme Court accepts an appeal on that issue, it could take longer than March 4 to decide how to rule.

That new timeline for the written decision by Judge Arthur Engoron is still a "rough estimate" and "subject to modifications," said Alfred Baker, spokesman for the New York State Office of Court Administration. A verdict in the New York civil business fraud trial of former President Donald Trump — which had been anticipated Wednesday — is now expected to arrive in early- to mid-February, a court spokesman said. In the case, New York Attorney General Letitia James accuses Trump, the Trump Organization, his two adult sons, and top company executives of inflating Trump's net worth on his financial statements in violation of a state anti-fraud law. The trial was conducted to determine penalties and resolve other claims of wrongdoing from James' lawsuit. Reuters first reported the new timeframe for the verdict.
