Currently, the Golden State’s minimum wage is $16 and is set to rise to $16.50 next year. California has been among the more aggressive states when it comes to hiking the minimum wage. Some 44% of likely California voters said they would vote yes in an October poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, down from 50% in September. Despite making films for over 40 years, Tim Burton’s visual style — a signature blend of light and dark — continues to defy neat description. Burton devoured everything from horror films to Ray Harryhausen animations, science fiction B movies and Japanese Kaiju monster films. Beyond Hollywood, Burton’s work has been inspiring the world of fashion for decades. The late Alexander McQueen’s Fall-Winter 2002 show, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ featured a now-iconic Batman-esque parachute cape inspired by Burton’s work. Census data released on October 17 indicates that New York recorded the highest rate of people moving out of all 50 states. Business Insider calculated each state's net moving rate by comparing the number of people who moved into and out of each state per 1,000 people. The states people move out of the mostOf all 50 states, New York ranks last with a net moving rate of -9.23. But because of its larger population and the greater number of movers into the Golden State, California's net migration rate lands right after Louisiana's. North Dakota — which has about 780,000 residents to New York's 20 million — had the highest net migration rate at 17.55.

Members of the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate on the field after winning Game 5 to win the 2024 World Series presented by Capital One between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 30, 2024. The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second World Series championship in five seasons, overcoming a five-run deficit with the help of three Yankees defensive miscues and rallying on sacrifice flies from Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts in the eighth inning to beat New York 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo's RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second and Giancarlo Stanton's third-inning homer against Ryan Brasier built a 5-0 Yankees lead. But errors by Judge in center and Anthony Volpe at shortstop, combined with pitcher Gerrit Cole failing to cover first on Betts' grounder, helped Los Angeles score five unearned runs in the fifth. After Stanton's sixth-inning sacrifice fly put the Yankees back ahead 6-5, the Dodgers loaded the bases against loser Tommy Kahnle in the eighth before the sacrifice flies off Luke Weaver.

President Harris would probably put more pressure on Israel to reach a cease-fire and open up talks with the Palestinians. Ukrainians worry that a President Trump would force a quick and dirty peace deal favorable to Russia. They hope a President Harris would continue to support them on the battlefield. Under President Harris, that would probably mean continuity with the Biden administration policies that have become much more restrictive over time. Trump's deportation plans could also hit the economy, given that immigration has boosted the job market. CNN —Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Thursday said the state had been targeted by election disinformation, pointing to a viral video of alleged voter fraud that he suggested could be the result of foreign meddling. Raffensperger, the top election official in the battleground state, said the video was “obviously fake” and was intended to raise illegitimate concerns about Georgia’s voting process. “This is false, and is an example of targeted disinformation we’ve seen this election.”“CISA [Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency] is currently investigating,” Raffensperger said. “In the meantime, we ask Elon Musk and the leadership of other social media platforms to take this down. Comcast is thinking about separating or spinning off NBCUniversal's cable networks. NBCUniversal's cable networks aren't growing anymore. That vision never materialized, in part because the media world's attention shifted from traditional pay TV to streaming, which devalued cable networks. The small media company wants to be the vehicle for a cable network rollup, CNBC reported in 2022. But even if Starz doesn't achieve its vision of a cable network rollup, it's possible a private equity firm may have interest in harvesting a group of cable networks for cash.

Mark Cuban knows what sets successful people apart from the crowd. Cuban, 66, is both a self-made billionaire and a longtime startup investor who's listened to many business pitches in more than a decade on ABC's "Shark Tank" and mentored dozens of entrepreneurs he's helped fund. You could land a coveted job, negotiate like a "Shark Tank" investor or launch a lucrative side hustle by mastering a specific handful of hard and soft skills, says Cuban. Here are three pieces of advice from the billionaire:Focus on 3 soft skills to land a jobWhenever the job market seems daunting, you can always fall back on the same three soft skills, Cuban says: agility, curiosity and adaptability. Rescuers are scrambling to find dozens of people missing after severe flash floods ripped across southern and eastern Spain, where some areas received up to 12 inches of rain in just a few hours. At least 95 people were killed, with the majority of deaths in the worst-hit region of Valencia, after being hit by the worst rainfall in the region in 28 years. The deluge of floodwater overturned cars, inundated highways and forced people to flee to rooftops to wait for rescuers. Emergency services in Valencia, the city of Malaga, and Castile-La-Mancha, among other regions, said search and rescue missions were still under way.

Merck on Thursday reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped expectations as the company saw strong sales from its top-selling cancer drug Keytruda, recently launched treatments and its animal health business. But Merck's vaccine that prevents cancer from HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S., posted another quarter of lighter-than-expected sales. Revenue from the shot, Gardasil, fell 11% compared to the year-earlier period, mainly due to lower demand in China. The company booked $16.66 billion in revenue for the third quarter, up 4% from the same period a year ago. The loss of exclusive rights to the medicine will likely cause sales to fall, forcing the company to draw revenue from elsewhere.
