LONDON — Liz Truss lost to a head of lettuce. The leafy vegetable's decay was more gradual than Truss' crumbling tenure as British prime minister, which ended with her resignation Thursday. Her decision provided an unlikely victory for the lettuce, which had been pitted against her by a tabloid newspaper last Friday. Amer Ghazzal / Shutterstock“The lettuce outlasted Liz Truss,” the caption declared as a remix of “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang kicked in, lights flashed in the background and bottles of alcohol were added to the scene. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev tweeted “congrats to lettuce” shortly after Truss’ speech.

ASTANA, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday there was no need for massive new strikes on Ukraine and that Russia was not looking to destroy the country. He also repeated the Kremlin position that Russia was willing to hold talks, although he said they would require international mediation if Ukraine was prepared to take part. He said there was "no need for massive strikes" now because most designated targets had been hit. But he answered "No" when asked if he had any regrets, saying failure to act in Ukraine would have been even worse. Organisers announced last week that London Fashion Week would go ahead as a "business-to-business event" while observing royal protocol and holding tributes for the 96-year-old queen who died on Sept. 8. "I thought as we are opening the event it was important to mark that moment," Fletcher told London newspaper the Evening Standard. Turkish designer Bora Aksu also held a minute's silence ahead of his show, where he presented his usual array of frilly feminine dresses, as well as military-style jackets and hats.
Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Restricted view: Concorde's windows were much smaller than those on a normal passenger airplane. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Concorde cloakroom: Despite the space limitations, there was room for a closet to ensure Concorde's well-heeled passengers wouldn't crease their coats and garments. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Work with perks: "The flight attendants loved being on it; the passengers loved being on it. Suzanne Plunkett/CNN Switches and dials: Meanwhile, in the cockpit, the pilots relied on simple analog dials and switches to control the super-fast jet. There are always rumors of new supersonic aircraft in the works, and I enjoy tracking the updates, but nothing seems concrete yet.
