It has been a decades-long dream of corporate America: making it harder for aggrieved customers, workers and others to file lawsuits against companies seeking compensation for alleged injuries, mistreatment and other harms. Now Uber, the giant ride-hailing company that has been a magnet for such litigation, is pitching a plan that could fulfill that fantasy, at least in one state. The company is seeking to place a measure on Nevada’s ballot that would drastically limit the amount of money that lawyers could collect when they brought successful lawsuits. If the measure passes, it will make it less attractive — and in some cases financially impractical — for plaintiffs’ lawyers to file such suits.

CNN —The New England Patriots won their first game in over 24 years without legendary coach Bill Belichick in charge, beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in their opening preseason game on Thursday. Third-year quarterback Bailey Zappe played a larger role, before rookie QB Joe Milton III finished the game. Milton III throws a pass to teammates Terrell Jennings in the second half against the Panthers. The last time New England won without Belichick on the sidelines was on January 2, 2000, when the Pete Carroll-led Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 20-3 in Foxborough. During his time with the team, Belichick won six Super Bowl titles and is famed for his pairing with legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

I grew up in Southern California in the 80s and 90s, where my dad introduced my brother, my sister and me to the surprisingly big ice hockey scene there. I went on to be a member of the U.S. Women's Hockey team in 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. Watching them, I've thought a lot about what it was like to come back from my own critical injury. With both injuries, I had to go to physical therapy in order to return to hockey. I learned to be emotionally resilientI don't think my trajectory, in sports and in business, would have been possible without the lessons I learned from my physical therapy.

Two people were stabbed in London’s Leicester Square, a tourist hot spot, on Monday, the police said. The victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman, were taken to a hospital, Westminster police said in a post on social media. In a later update, the police said that the girl would require hospital treatment but that her injuries were not life threatening and that the woman suffered more minor injuries. The episode came exactly two weeks after a deadly knife attack in Southport, near Liverpool, that led to the death of three young girls and injured eight other children and two adults. In the days after the stabbings in Southport, false information about the identity of the attacker, including that he was an undocumented migrant, spread rapidly online and ignited a series of violent riots around Britain.

CNN —Renewed fears of ethnic cleansing against the stateless Rohingya Muslim community are mounting after reports that hundreds of people, including women and children, were killed by drone strikes while fleeing violence in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state last week. Witnesses and Rohingya activists told CNN that a series of drone strikes on August 5 hit civilians fleeing fighting and violence in their villages in Maungdaw, northern Rakhine. The displaced families had been waiting to cross the river to Bangladesh at the time of the attack, they said. Forced recruitment of Rohingya men and boys is stoking religious tensions between the Rohingya Muslim and Rakhine Buddhist communities, the report said. “Ethnic Rohingya and Rakhine civilians are bearing the brunt of the atrocities that the Myanmar military and opposition Arakan Army are committing,” said Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

South Korea’s military says North Korea is again flying balloons likely carrying trash toward the South, adding to a bizarre psychological warfare campaign amid growing tensions between the war-divided rivals. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday that the winds could carry the balloons to regions north of the South Korean capital, Seoul. North Korea last flew balloons toward the South on July 24, when trash carried by at least one of them fell on the South Korean presidential compound, raising worries about the vulnerability of key South Korean facilities. The balloon contained no dangerous material and no one was hurt, South Korea’s presidential security service said. Experts say North Korea hates such broadcasts because it fears it could demoralize front-line troops and residents.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

PAGE, Ariz. — A large geological feature in southern Utah known as the “Double Arch,” the “Hole in the Roof” and sometimes the “Toilet Bowl” has collapsed, National Park Service officials said Friday. The popular arch in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area fell Thursday, and park rangers suspect changing water levels and erosion from waves in Lake Powell contributed to its demise. Michelle Kerns, superintendent of the recreation area that spans the border of Utah and Arizona, said the collapse serves as a reminder to protect the mineral resources that surround the lake. The arch was formed from 190 million-year-old Navajo sandstone originating in the late Triassic to early Jurassic periods. The recreation area encompasses nearly 2,000 square miles and is popular among boaters and hikers.

Three of the witnesses told Reuters on Friday that the Arakan Army was responsible, allegations the group denied. Samsung has issued a recall for over 1 million slide-in electric ranges due to fire hazard after the company received reports that its front knobs could be unintentionally activated by people or pets, and resulted in 250 blazes. Since 2013, Samsung received over 300 reports of the "unintentional activation" of the range's front-mounted knobs by humans or pets. Samsung is offering free knob locks or knob covers as a remedy to the issue. Further, some Samsung ranges with Wi-Fi connectivity can send users a notification via the Samsung SmartThings app to warn when a burner is activated. For now, here's what we know — and what we don't know — about stem-cell therapy for knees. Bryan Johnson flew to the Bahamas to get MSC stem cells injected into his knees, hips, and shoulders — for about $16,500 per joint. Plus, even Sampson warns that young donor stem cells should not be seen as a quick fix or a panacea. Done with proper medical oversight, some studies have found no adverse effects from stem-cell treatments for various conditions. Botched stem-cell treatments can cause infection, blindness, and excessive cell growth, which can trigger the formation of tumors.
