What Will Biden Donors Do Now?

Donors still on edgeThe shock waves from last week’s presidential debate are still reverberating, as President Biden and his aides sought to allay concerns from despondent Democrats and wealthy donors about his age and fitness for office. Donors are increasingly becoming reconciled to Biden remaining the Democratic nominee even after Biden’s disastrous performance. But some in the party, and in the markets, are increasingly expecting Donald Trump to win in November. Seventy-two percent of registered voters don’t believe Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president, according to a CBS News poll published Sunday, compared with 65 percent in early June. With the odds for a Trump win rising after the debate, Wall Street analysts are recalculating what that could mean for the economy and the markets.

Tesla stock is set for big upside in the second half of 2024, Wedbush predicted. That's because the carmaker is finally a turnaround in weak demand from China, Dan Ives said. But those headwinds are easing, particularly as things begin to stabilize in China, Ives said. The release could represent a major turning point for Tesla stock, Ives said, previously calling the robotaxi a "magic model" for the company. I believe this is a stock that's going to have a massive run second-half of the year."

But Congress may not criminalize the President’s conduct in carrying out the responsibilities of the Executive Branch under the Constitution. Juries can’t even consider official acts in terms of a prosecution, according to the Supreme Court. This case poses a question of lasting significance: When may a former President be prosecuted for official acts taken during his Presidency? She said they could easily have expressed that some of Trump’s conduct was unofficial. Sorting private from official conduct sometimes will be difficult—but not always.

He’s a Palestinian now.” The remark presumably meant to suggest that Schumer, who is Jewish, is somehow not supportive enough of Israel. Supporters hold up signs at former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Virginia on June 28, 2024, one day after his historic debate against President Joe Biden. Some correctly noted that Trump revealed his view that Black Americans are relegated to working in low-paying, menial jobs that anyone could fill. Rep. James Clyburn, a Democrat from South Carolina, speaking Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, noted that Trump’s “Black jobs” remark shows that Trump has “a low opinion of Black people.” But that’s nothing new, Clyburn added. The only question is whether enough Americans will reject Trump’s vileness to ensure that he never gets there again.

But that's not what it looked like on Thursday when Biden floundered in his debate performance against former President Donald Trump, political strategists told Business Insider. "It was a disaster for President Biden," Alex Zdan, GOP political strategist and former New Jersey Republican candidate for US Senate, told BI. Where the similarities endAnother Trump presidency would mean a vastly different America than if Biden won a second term. When BI reached out for comment, representatives for the Trump campaign declined to answer questions about similarities between Trump and Biden. To have a chance, Biden will need that constituency to ignore his poor debate performance and questions about his age.

Washington CNN —Donald Trump used to tell his fans that he’d win so much, they’d get tired of winning. The ex-president’s lawyers are already signaling they will seek to get evidence tossed and obstruction counts against the ex-president dismissed. The court released its decision ahead of an even more critical case that will bear more directly on Trump’s criminal entanglements. A second 2020 election case, in Georgia, is also stalled – partly over a controversy and appeals process triggered by a relationship between District Attorney Fani Willis and a prosecutor she appointed. Trump is only three years younger than Biden and often lapses into gibberish in campaign events.

"I think general consensus, not just my view, but almost anybody modeling what is going on would say the Trump administration would be more inflationary," Stiglitz told BI. AdvertisementStiglitz noted Trump's promise of large increases in tariffs as one of the things that could make inflation worse. Outside of the risks to inflation, Stiglitz said a Trump presidency could also mean a slowing GDP.

In fact, for many if not most jobs, there are no legal prohibitions on hiring those with criminal records. And when a criminal record of any kind turns up, that can kill a person’s chances, regardless of how well-qualified they may be for a position, either because an employer has a high aversion to risk or a bias against those with a record, Love said. Or the paperwork and time required to get approval for someone with a criminal record may be such that an employer simply decides to look at candidates without a record. “Sometimes people believe they are required to turn my clients down because of a criminal conviction. That law provides for eligible conviction records to be automatically “sealed,” meaning they should no longer show up on employer background checks.

CNN —In CNN’s presidential debate, President Joe Biden was halting and, at times, trailed off and confused words, feeding a nagging narrative about his fitness for the presidency. Trump said Biden couldn’t drive a golf ball 50 yards, and Biden challenged Trump to a golf match but only if Trump carries his own clubs. We’ve got to take a look at what I was left when I became president, what Mr. Trump left me. -TrumpBiden said Trump deserves blame for watching the riot at the Capitol unfold for hours without doing anything to intervene. CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s social media company is getting a boost after President Joe Biden’s shaky debate performance. Shares of Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) rose 4% in early trading Friday as investors bet the debate has boosted Trump’s chances of retaking the White House. Trump is the chairman of Trump Media, and he is the leading shareholder. Trump Media doesn’t really trade on the fundamentals of the underlying company, the stock has ebbed and flowed with the news about Donald Trump, including his criminal conviction and Thursday night’s debate performance. Trump Media is valued at more than $6 billion even though the company makes very little revenue and Truth Social is tiny.

Cramer also said Tesla might fare better under Trump and Biden because Trump is not pro-union. China Trump has said he would be even tougher on China if he were re-elected.

In the wake of a contentious debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on Thursday night, CNBC's Jim Cramer described how the vibe of the market could change if Trump returned to the White House. Cramer noted that Trump is broadly amiable to gas and oil, pointing to companies like New Fortress Energy and Cheniere . Cramer said as long as he's known Trump, the GOP candidate has had a keen interest in the market. "He loved bantering about the stock market, appeared on this show many times, because even though he was in real estate, he enjoyed stocks," Cramer said. Former President Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

CNN —President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, are set to make history on CNN Thursday night as they meet for their first 2024 debate. Thursday’s debate will be the earliest in the election cycle that a presidential debate featuring the major parties’ nominees has taken place in modern history. That’s why Trump’s advisers and allies have urged the former president to focus on issues like the economy, crime and inflation as he debates Biden. The Biden campaign knows all this, of course, so it will be interesting – and instructive – to hear his message and analyze where it’s being targeted. The Trump campaign distanced itself, in part, from the plan, noting that the advisers who wrote it are not on the payroll.

CNN —The Almighty won’t be standing on stage alongside Joe Biden on Thursday night. Biden’s campaign laid the groundwork for the Atlanta showdown hosted by CNN in a weekend memo. If Trump rants and vents his 2020 election lies on Thursday, he will play into Biden’s hands. That could avoid the mayhem of the first Trump v. Biden debate in 2020. A sweep of the executive and legislative branches by either Democrats or Republicans in the November election could spell more risk to crypto assets, according to TD Cowen. "Divided government is the best possible outcome for financial firms, housing and crypto as we believe there would be bipartisan legislative and regulatory agreements that could survive future political changes," TD Cowen's Jaret Seiberg wrote in a note Monday. "If Biden wins, a Republican Senate could limit his ability to put aggressive regulators in power," Seiberg added. "Trump would likely have a GOP Senate, but House Democrats could block his legislative agenda.
