On Nov. 8, 1971, Led Zeppelin released its iconic fourth studio album, which was untitled but is widely known as “Led Zeppelin IV.” It features the band’s major hit “Stairway to Heaven,” and the wordless cover shows the image of a bearded, older man with a large bundle of sticks on his back against the backdrop of a decaying wall. Now, 52 years later to the day, a minor mystery about that cover has been solved. Sometimes thought to be a painting, the image, it turns out, was a Victorian-era photograph of a man who made thatched roofs for cottages in Wiltshire, a rural county in southwestern England. His name was Lot Long and he was 69 at the time, according to Brian Edwards, a researcher who found the photo. As he was looking through a Victorian photo album full of landscapes and houses, Mr. Edwards noticed a photo he had seemingly seen before.

Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese speaks during the bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Joko Widodo on the sidelines of the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, 07 September 2023. Albanese, who arrived on Saturday, was due to meet President Xi Jinping later on Monday, their second face-to-face talks in a year. At the Temple of Heaven, Albanese posed for a photograph at the circular Echo Wall, the same spot where Australia's then prime minister, Gough Whitlam, stood in 1973, a year after the two countries established ties. China and Australia for decades built a relationship on trade, with China becoming Australia's biggest trading partner with its purchases of Australian food and natural resources. 'PROMISING SIGNS'But Albanese took steps to stabilise relations after he became prime minister in May last year and met Xi on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Indonesia in November.

In fact, the one person Mr. Perry can’t seem to forgive, at least for a majority of his book, is himself. There is no positive byproduct of shame.” If you carry shame with you to heaven, heaven itself will feel like hell. Very few of us can understand the particular strain of shame that comes with the celebrity Mr. Perry attained. We continue to have our own versions of the conversation Mr. Perry had with his mother, looking for love and forgiveness from figures in our lives instead of locating these things within ourselves. We shouldn’t paint a life like Mr. Perry’s as fatally flawed or doomed from the start.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“Take, for example, the Israel Defense Forces strike on Gaza’s Jabalya refugee camp on Tuesday. “Following the horrific massacre in Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7, I felt an intense, relentless grief. Though Perry wanted to escape Chandler, he kept him around, because heaven forbid anyone saw what he was hiding.”

I started thinking about my own experience with addiction when Matthew Perry passed away. It’s a sense that you don’t really fit in, that everyone else sort of has it wired of how to get along in the world and you don’t. And I think it revs you up past that sense of isolation, past that sense of loneliness. Obviously, it doesn’t work like that because I don’t think anything really penetrates that. He went through a really rough addiction and we don’t know yet the cause of his death, but we know that he really ravaged his body.

Commentators have paid tribute to Perry and to Chandler in equal measure. As Perry made clear in his 2022 autobiography, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” it did not. Chandler, Perry insisted, was a front. Three weeks before his audition for “Friends,” Perry said he fell to his knees and prayed “God, you can do whatever you want to me. The show looms so large and Perry’s performance as Chandler Bing was so indelible that it can be difficult to think of him in any other context. But Perry had a long and varied career that included films, many other series and the occasional play. Here are some of his most memorable performances and how to watch them. As Chandler, Perry was the sharpest, funniest Friend. Perry’s well-known struggles with addiction are unavoidably linked to his time on the show — for instance, he said he went to rehab right after filming Monica and Chandler’s wedding.

Former Vice President Mike Pence announced that he would drop his bid for the White House on Saturday, as he determined that “this is not my time.”“I was raised to believe that to whom much is given much will be required, and with everything our country is facing, I just couldn’t sit this one out. But the Bible tells us that there’s a time for every purpose under heaven,” Pence said during remarks at a Las Vegas convention. “So after much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to suspend my campaign for president, effective today.”Pence’s campaign had struggled to gain a foothold amid a crowded Republican primary field. The outcome was an approach that seemed inconsistent, with Pence at times distancing himself from the former president, while he tried to take credit for the administration’s work on certain issues, like immigration. But Pence made clear that he’s committed to seeing a Republican in the White House, and while he’s suspending his campaign, he won’t “leave the fight for conservative values.”

A few years ago, my wife, Sarah, and I went on a sailing trip on the eastern Aegean. Thirty or forty miles to the south of our boat was Miletus, the birthplace of some of the first recorded theorists of the physical world. Across a nearby peninsula, just 70 miles away, was Lesbos, the island of Sappho and Alcaeus, the greatest early lyric poets. To the south in Samos was the birthplace of Pythagoras, an early theorist of an everlasting soul. It struck me that not so far out of view from the cockpit of our small boat was the whole province in which Greek philosophy had begun.

NEW YORK (AP) — Those miracles of modern science, the Rolling Stones, celebrated the release of their first album of original music in 18 years with a Manhattan club gig on Thursday. Mick Jagger alluded to past stunts the Stones had done in New York to tout new music over the years, including performing on a flatbed truck on Fifth Avenue. “Hackney Diamonds,” coming at a time many fans wondered if the Rolling Stones would ever bother again with new music, has been well received by critics, with many noting the crisp energy the band displayed. This time, the bar band was the Rolling Stones. Lady Gaga, dressed in a maroon sequined pantsuit, appeared to recreate her duet — duel, really — with Jagger on the new “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”“New York, the Rolling Stones!” she said before leaving, after exchanging kisses with Jagger and Richards.
