WASHINGTON (AP) — A Trump White House official convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol is set to be sentenced Thursday. Navarro was found guilty of defying a subpoena for documents and a deposition from the House Jan. 6 committee. Navarro served as a White House trade adviser under then-President Donald Trump and later promoted the Republican’s baseless claims of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election he lost. Navarro has vowed to appeal the verdict, saying he couldn’t cooperate with the committee because Trump had invoked executive privilege. Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was convicted of two counts and was sentenced to four months behind bars, though he has been free while appealing his conviction.

Peter Navarro, a former advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, arrives at the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse on January 25, 2024 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — Former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro will be sentenced Thursday for criminal contempt of Congress, with federal prosecutors saying he "thumbed his nose" at the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Federal prosecutors are seeking six months in federal prison for Navarro, saying he, "like the rioters at the Capitol, put politics, not country, first, and stonewalled Congress's investigation." Navarro, prosecutors said, "chose allegiance to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law." U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta will sentence Navarro at the hearing, which gets underway at 10 a.m.

ABC and NBC's streaming services carried a part of Trump live, then left and corrected some of what Trump said. Live coverage of events is the go-to move for cable networks, which thrive on a sense of urgency. “Saturday Night Live” opened its show last week with a spoof of one of those news conferences. Fox News' Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters both did segments on rivals' decisions not to show Trump's Iowa speech in full. On MSNBC Wednesday, Trump's speech received far more attention on “Morning Joe” than it had the night before.

Mike Segar | ReutersMarkets need to begin thinking about the structural impact of Donald Trump's proposed 10% tariff increase, which "shakes up every asset class," according to Michael Every, global strategist at Rabobank. He suggested one of investors' top concerns would be the 10% tariff on all U.S. imports. Trump floated the 10% tariff during an interview last year with Fox Business' Larry Kudlow, his former White House economic advisor, saying "it's a massive amount of money." China responded with its own tariffs on U.S. goods, and Trump also imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from most countries, including many of Washington's biggest allies. He noted Trump's tendency to "change his mind" so frequently on geopolitical issues that "people won't know where his thinking is at."

Allegations have surfaced of an affair between Fulton County DA Fani Willis and an attorney she hired. The lawyer is seeking to get the indictment tossed and to remove Willis and Wade from the case. Outside of any effect on this case, Willis, an elected Democrat, is up for reelection this year, and this could become a campaign issue depending on how she ultimately responds. The former president publicly fulminated against Judge Lewis Kaplan as “nasty” and a “Trump-hating guy” and bucked courtroom etiquette. Trump accused Kaplan of being heartless for not suspending the trial so that he can attend the funeral of his mother-in-law. But Haley has only implicitly criticized Trump’s assault on democracy, false claims of electoral fraud and tumultuous term in office. This attitude is consistent with Trump’s apparent belief that rules that apply to other Americans don’t constrain him. “That aside, it’s just remarkable how much the former president has gotten away with in court.

Her memoir was, appropriately, entitled: “Are You Tough Enough?”Her son Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court justice since 2017, has shown his own brand of defiance and anti-regulatory fervor. In recent years, Justice Gorsuch has voted against regulations that protect the environment, student-debt forgiveness and Covid-19 precautions. He has led calls on the court for reversal of a 1984 Supreme Court decision that gives federal agencies considerable regulatory latitude and that, coincidentally traces to his mother’s tenure. The lawyers who will argue on behalf of the challengers are seasoned appellate advocates who once served as Supreme Court law clerks, as did Solicitor General Prelogar. That argument has prevailed in courts for decades, but the Supreme Court has signaled that it is ready for a new era.

Reversal of the so-called Chevron deference approach was a priority for the judicial selection team that served Trump – on par with some right-wing activists’ quest for reversal of constitutional abortion rights. The reconstituted Supreme Court delivered on that agenda item in 2022 when it overturned Roe v. Wade. Former White House counsel Don McGahn, who controlled Trump’s judicial selections, regularly touted the administration’s anti-regulation agenda. He was especially drawn to the first two Trump appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, for their records in that regard. In his written brief and during arguments, Martinez invoked an adage of Chief Justice Roberts from his 2005 confirmation hearings, that judges serve as umpires, just calling balls and strikes.

Editor’s Note: John Avlon is a CNN senior political analyst and anchor. A truly stunning number of former Cabinet-level Trump administration officials are trying to warn Republican primary voters that their old boss’s reelection would be a disaster for our country. Share them with friends, family and neighbors who might be tempted to go along with the crowd and vote for Trump. But what about the Republican elected officials who have scrambled to endorse Trump before a single person has actually voted? “We can’t participate in the normalization of Donald Trump,” an impassioned Goldberg told me by phone on Monday. On Monday, The Atlantic published a special edition of its monthly magazine focusing on what a second Trump term would look like. “And I believe that a second Trump term poses a threat to the existence of America as we know it.”It is not difficult for newsrooms to state that they are pro-democracy. That is why I am comfortable devoting an entire issue of answering the question of what a second Trump term would look like and reaching the conclusion that it would be terrible. Larry Kudlow , his former White House economic adviser, points out that many voters like Trump policies, which is true. How does “stop the steal” advance their cause? One might also ask how and why collusion continues to work for Democrats. My inbox is as revealing about collusion as it is about stop the steal, with some Democrats clinging to whatever they heard first, including the legend of the Moscow hotel room, long since debunked by the U.S. Justice Department.

The White House on Friday condemned House Republicans’ wide-ranging impeachment inquiry into President Biden, saying that there was no legitimacy to the investigation and that recent subpoenas and demands for congressional testimony from the former White House counsel, White House aides and Biden family members were “irresponsible.”“You appear so determined to impeach the president that you have misrepresented the facts, ignored the overwhelming evidence disproving your claims and repeatedly shifted the rationale for your ‘inquiry,’” Richard Sauber, a special counsel for Mr. Biden, wrote to Representatives James R. Comer, a Kentucky Republican who leads the Oversight Committee, and Representative Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican who heads the Judiciary Committee. Mr. Sauber’s letter came after House Republicans demanded to interview Biden family members and issued a subpoena to Dana Remus, a former White House counsel under Mr. Biden. It was perhaps the strongest rebuke of the inquiry the Biden administration has issued. House Republicans are investigating myriad aspects of the Biden administration and have accused the president of accepting millions of dollars in bribes and altering U.S. policy to enrich his family, but they have not produced proof to back up their boldest claims. Their investigation has focused heavily on the president’s son, Hunter Biden, and work he did for companies and partners in Ukraine, China and other countries.

Congress now appears likely to avoid a government shutdown this week. The White House even weighed in over the weekend before House Democrats started to warm up to Johnson's plan. Republican Sen. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.
