Read previewPresident Joe Biden on Thursday used his State of the Union to take concerns about his age head on. Advertisement"Now some other people my age see differently, the American story of revenge, resentment, and retribution," Biden said. "My fellow Americans, the issue facing our nation isn't how old we are: It's about how old our ideas are," he said. Polling shows that even in this hyper-partisan era, Americans broadly agree in their concerns about Biden's age. Democrats also bristle about the extent of concerns about Biden's age compared to former President Donald Trump, the man Biden surpassed to become the oldest president.

CNN —The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is leveraging the attention on Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated film “Oppenheimer” in an attempt to elevate the conversation about nuclear threat. Kerry, now 80, is stepping down this week but will continue to work on climate change. It is the test of our own times, a test as acute and as existential as any previous one. When Biden came in, the credibility of the United States was in the crapper, and we were viewed with suspicion if not derision. Our job was to go out and create credibility for our nation and for the president. At the time, the U.S. didn’t really have a global strategy, and so we laid out “keep 1.5 alive.”

The pattern repeated itself in Wake County, which is anchored by the state capital of Raleigh and its suburbs. While Trump won Wake by 20 points (58%-38%), it was well below his roughly 51-point edge over Haley statewide. Glenn Youngkin in 2021 — Trump also underperformed in suburban areas including Loudoun County and Henrico County. And in Henrico County, a former GOP stronghold that is still filled with many suburban voters who once fully embraced the party's candidates, Trump only won by 11 points (55%-44%).

To start with, who are the Republican voters that Trump will have the most trouble getting to the polls in November? In South Carolina, it was 36% of voters in the Republican primary (and Trump won 18% of them). In New Hampshire, it was 46% (and Trump won 22% of them). Biden won four of 2020’s battleground states by 2% or less, and Trump won North Carolina, the closest battleground state in which he prevailed, by just a little over a point. Her effort isn’t harmless, however: It does force the Trump campaign to spend money that could otherwise be put toward taking on Biden.

These voters are often called "double haters," as they'll have to choose between two candidates that they don't like. Since January, Trump has emerged victorious in the Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, Nevada caucuses, and South Carolina primary. But the GOP electorate remains enamored with the former president, judging by his track record in the earlier contests. Trump narrowly won Michigan in the 2016 general election, besting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a state that until that year had backed every Democratic presidential nominee since 1992. The Republican made significant inroads with working-class voters in suburban Detroit and rural voters across the state.

That evening, Rollie passed a thumb drive containing disinformation about Hunter Biden and Burisma to a Pompeo aide. Smirnov was indicted last week for lying to the FBI about Hunter Biden. The revelation about Rollie's thumb drive comes shortly after the indictment of Smirnov, for allegedly making false statements about Hunter Biden in June 2020. In the lobby of the grand Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Fla., where a sprawling new force in Washington’s right-wing ecosystem, the Conservative Partnership Institute, was holding its winter conference, the former Trump legal adviser Cleta Mitchell was exultant. “Did you hear the ‘War Room’ today? Bannon was on fire!” she said to a friend. She was referring to the podcast hosted by Stephen K. Bannon, the former Trump White House senior adviser who had been condemning Republican senators for supporting billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine and Israel earlier that day. Ms. Mitchell was among some 150 conservative donors and activists who gathered in Coral Gables earlier this month to celebrate the ascendancy of a group that has become a well-paying sinecure for Trump allies and an incubator for the policies the former president could pursue if elected.

House Republicans rammed through the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. AdvertisementHouse Republicans on Tuesday rammed through the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, marking a historic moment exactly a week after an embarrassing failure. Three Republicans, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California, and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, joined House Democrats in voting against the measure. The last time Congress impeached a Cabinet secretary was in 1876 when lawmakers impeached former Secretary of War William W. Belknap. Biden has emphasized how the White House tried to strike a bipartisan border-Ukraine deal only for former President Donald Trump and House Republicans to nuke the agreement shortly after its public announcement.

Biden aides say they do not expect the president or his campaign to take on the age question more directly. Beyond celebrating the release of the special counsel's embarrassing descriptions of Biden, Trump won a new trove of delegates in Nevada's Thursday caucuses, where he ran unopposed. New York CNN —Hillary Clinton, Sheryl Sandberg and a coalition of scholars, government officials and legal experts discussed Friday how to prevent sexual violence as a weapon of war. Israeli authorities have accused Hamas militants of committing widespread, systemic sexual violence as part of their attack. Despite mounting evidence from Israeli investigators and eyewitness sources, Hamas has repeatedly denied allegations that its fighters committed sexual violence during the attack. Matviichuk said sexual violence during the war in Ukraine is violence that “is directed to the whole Ukrainian society.”“The survivors of sexual violence feel shame because it happens with them,” Matviichuk said. “It is about understanding deeply, the very real ways that women and girls are impacted differently by global challenges including this challenge of conflict-related sexual violence,” Clinton said.

CNN —John Podesta, a senior White House adviser focused on clean energy and climate, will take over as US climate diplomat after John Kerry steps down this spring, according to a source familiar with the move. Podesta first came to the Biden White House in September 2022, when he was tasked with implementing the climate measures in the Inflation Reduction Act. Podesta also previously served as a top climate adviser to former President Barack Obama, where he was involved both in domestic and international climate policy. Podesta will inherit a more favorable international climate landscape than Kerry did when he took the role in 2021. The credible data that exists on crimes motivated by conspiracy theories shows a disturbing increase. Many of those charged said they had bought into Trump’s conspiracy theories about a stolen election. “Lies, lies lies: They're lying to you over and over and over again,” said Steve Girard, a Pennsylvania man who has protested the incarceration of Jan. 6 defendants. While they may have taken on a bigger role in our politics, surveys show that belief in conspiracy theories hasn't changed much over the years, according to Joe Uscinski, a University of Miami professor and an expert on the history of conspiracy theories. Russia has amplified numerous anti-U.S. conspiracy theories, including ones claiming the U.S. runs secret germ warfare labs and created HIV as a bioweapon, as well as conspiracy theories accusing Ukraine of being a Nazi state.

Senate Republicans and Democrats have attempted to negotiate border-related legislation for weeks. Trump is pushing his supporters in Congress to kill the bill to gain an upper hand in the election. No public text has been released despite months of negotiations, even senators have complained that they are receiving few details from the discussions between Sen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, and Senate Democrats. "Using a one-time spending package to enact these unrelated permanent policy changes sets a dangerous precedent and risks assistance to our international partners," 11 Senate Democrats said in a statement about the talks. House Speaker Mike Johnson said it's "absurd" to suggest he would kill the talks to help Trump.

"When we return next week, by necessity, the House Homeland Security Committee will move forward with Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas," Johnson wrote in a "Dear Colleague" letter. Jonathan Turley, a George Washington law professor and frequent voice for conservatives on impeachment, has argued that impeaching Mayorkas for these reasons would set a dangerous precedent. Congress has only ever impeached one Cabinet Secretary: former Secretary of War William Belknap. CNN —Democrats should not make the mistake of underestimating former President Donald Trump. Moreover, they note, Haley was able to win independent voters who theoretically would be more amenable to President Joe Biden than Trump in the fall. Moreover, the number of Republicans who keep saying they won’t vote for Trump under any circumstances, gives Democrats hope that on Election Day, many voters in the GOP won’t turn out. But these arguments downplay the threat Trump will pose to Biden in November by ignoring several fundamentals. Trump is succeeding even though the United States has never had a major presidential candidate saddled with so much legal baggage.
