Nikki Haley Battles Long Odds in New Hampshire
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Long lines snaked into and around polling locations today in New Hampshire, where the first presidential primaries of 2024 will set the tone for the rest of the year. In the Republican contest, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, barnstormed polling locations in a last-ditch effort to upset Donald Trump. New Hampshire, which has been known to throw curveballs into the race, has long been seen as her best, and perhaps last, shot at competing with Trump. My colleague Jazmine Ulloa, who has been covering Haley’s campaign, told me that Haley has continued to project confidence and cast herself as a fighter, despite trailing in the polls. But Haley’s campaign vowed in a memo to stay in the race no matter what happens.

Mr. Trump’s earlier supporters have seized on Mr. DeSantis’s departure from the race to declare Mr. Trump the “presumptive nominee,” though only Iowa has voted so far. Mr. Trump already has the support of Speaker Mike Johnson and the majority of congressional Republicans. field, all three of those men will appear alongside Mr. Trump on Monday night at a rally in Laconia, N.H., according to officials with the Trump campaign. (Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, whom Ms. Haley endorsed for president in 2016, backed Mr. Trump shortly before the Iowa caucuses.) I want to make it a live-free-or-die-country.”Holdouts among top Republicans for Mr. Trump are few and far between.

What to Watch in the New Hampshire Primary

New Hampshire voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the first presidential primary of the 2024 nomination cycle, in a state that has been known to throw curveballs at overwhelming favorites. The withdrawal of Gov. Ron DeSantis from the Republican race on Sunday effectively left what had recently been a crowded field of candidates down to two: former President Donald J. Trump, and former Gov. The national Democratic Party, pushed by President Biden, had wanted New Hampshire Democrats to break tradition and move their primary to the end of February. New Hampshire refused, leaving the president’s supporters to mount a write-in campaign for the absent Mr. Biden against Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, the self-help author Marianne Williams and 19 other Democrats whose names are on the ballot.

Former President Donald J. Trump paved a path to the presidency in 2016 by calling for a “big, beautiful wall” along the United States border with Mexico. His 2024 rivals in the Republican primary election, scrapping for every advantage against him, looked north. Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, has frequently told voters that it’s not just the southern border that needs stepped-up enforcement — “it’s the northern border, too.”“I think we do whatever it takes to keep people out,” she told reporters on Saturday when asked if her comments meant she supported building a wall. “If that’s what it takes to keep them out, we will do a wall, we will do any sort of border patrol that we need to have.”

Donald Trump has picked up another endorsement from Nikki Haley's home state of South Carolina, with Rep. Nancy Mace backing the former president in this year's GOP presidential primary. Mace had stayed out of the 2024 Republican primary as two fellow South Carolinians — former Gov. Over the weekend, Trump was joined by a slew of South Carolina leaders as he campaigned in New Hampshire, seen as yet another blow from South Carolina against Haley. Just two years ago, Mace and Haley were aligned in a congressional primary that tested Trump's heft in South Carolina, where his own 2016 presidential primary win helped cement his nomination. During a pre-primary rally in South Carolina, Trump called Mace "crazy" and "a terrible person."

Mr. DeSantis, who endorsed Mr. Trump on his way out of the race, earned some praise and a reprieve from the former president’s persistent name-calling. In fact, most have now thrown their support behind Mr. Trump, underscoring the steep challenges she faces in securing allies to challenge the famously spiteful Mr. Trump. The betrayal of Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a former Haley ally who endorsed Mr. Trump, seemed to particularly sting Ms. Haley. Chris Christie of New Jersey has previously signaled his reluctance to endorse Ms. Haley, and she has countered that she did not want his endorsement.) What remains unclear on the eve of the primary is just how much impact Mr. DeSantis’s withdrawal will have in New Hampshire.

Nikki Haley Mounts a Last Stand in New Hampshire

Nikki Haley finally got what she has desired since the very beginning of her campaign for the Republican presidential nomination: a one-on-one showdown with Donald Trump. Ron DeSantis of Florida ended his bid, leaving Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as the only real threat to a third consecutive Trump nomination. Polls show Trump with a strong lead, but Haley rejected the notion that the race was over, saying “America doesn’t do coronations. A Suffolk University poll from today suggested that Trump would receive a slight increase in support in New Hampshire after the departure of DeSantis, who endorsed the former president. Trump also garnered the endorsement of two South Carolina politicians: Senator Tim Scott, a former Haley ally, as well as Representative Nancy Mace, whom Haley endorsed for Congress and whom Trump attempted to unseat in 2022.

Delivering her most forceful case yet for the Republican presidential nomination, Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, embraced her underdog status this weekend as independent, anti-Trump voters urged her on. But with the first-in-the-nation primary on Tuesday, Ms. Haley has enormous ground to make up and very little time to do it. Mr. Trump was filling arenas and event centers in Concord and Manchester, N.H., on Friday and Saturday, speaking to adoring throngs as Republican elected officials fell in line. Ms. Haley, meanwhile, was visiting retail stores and restaurants. Suffolk University’s daily tracking poll of New Hampshire voters on Saturday had Mr. Trump leading Ms. Haley by double digits, 53 percent to 36 percent, with his margin having crept up a percentage point each of the previous two days.

In the years since, he has continued to pile up accusations of racism on the campaign trail. This week, Mr. Trump lobbed his latest racially charged attack at former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, the daughter of Indian immigrants and his closest competitor in the New Hampshire primary, by repeatedly flubbing her given name, Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. On Friday, Mr. Trump referred to Ms. Haley as “Nimbra” in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, three days after facing criticism for dubbing her “Nimrada.” Ms. Haley has long gone by her middle name, Nikki. Both are racist dog whistles, much like his continued focus on Mr. Obama’s middle name, Hussein, and add to a long history of racially incendiary statements from the campaign trail.

Should Trump's lead hold, says Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump will become the first candidate – aside from sitting presidents – to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. "We're so far past the days when voters nationally were really just waking up" to the campaign debates in the early weeks of a presidential election year, says Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire professor and author of the book "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics." New Hampshire GOP voters, however, are a different breed of Republicans, Smith says, focusing more on fiscal conservatism and small government. Haley has 36% support and DeSantis 6% backing among primary voters. Trump seems to think so, too: He has focused much of his vitriol in the waning days of the New Hampshire campaign on Haley.
