GUATEMALA CITY — The prominent Guatemalan investigative newspaper “El Periódico” announced Wednesday that it is stopping its print edition, after the government arrested the paper’s president. Zamora has overseen dozens of investigations into corruption during his leadership at El Periódico since the paper was founded in 1996. All of the paper’s reporters have been let go, and it is not clear how it can continue with digital editions only. Giammattei has been dismissive of U.S. officials’ criticism of his attorney general and what they see as Guatemala backsliding on battling corruption. His administration has silenced independent press outlets, driving journalists into exile and taking television stations off the air.
CNN —As the hurricane season closes, a handful of blockbuster storms made history after an eerily quiet first half of the season gave false hope. In fact, we didn’t have any named storms from July 3 to August 31, the first time that’s occurred since 1941. One of those storms was Hurricane Ian, which hit land in late September and will go down as the most memorable storm of the 2022 season. “Tropical storms have formed in every month outside of hurricane season, and there have been a few hurricanes, too,” NOAA said. Historically, we’ve seen at least 15 named storms form in the month of December, even all the way up to December 30.
Three African migrants who were balancing on a ship's rudder were rescued by the Spanish coast guard on Monday after an 11-day voyage, according to officials. In a tweet published Monday, the coast guard said it rescued the migrants from the rudder of Alithini II, a ship that traveled from Nigeria to the Canary Islands. They can be seen sitting on the ship’s rudder with their backs bent, apparently due to lack of space, in a picture shared by the agency. The Alithini II, an oil and chemical tanker, arrived at the Canary Islands on Monday following an 11-day journey from Lagos, Nigeria, according to Marinetraffic.com. The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, "are a popular gateway for African migrants attempting to reach Europe," with Spanish data showing migration to the archipelago increased to 51% the first five months of 2022 compared to last year, Reuters reported.
The Spanish coast guard rescued three men who traveled from Nigeria to the Canary Islands on a ship's rudder. They survived the 11-day journey that left from the port of Lagos in Nigeria on November 17. The men were sitting on the upper part of the rudder blade on the outside of the hull, under the stern, the agency reported. The Maltese-flagged oil tanker "Alithini II" had left Nigeria on November 17 and arrived Monday afternoon, according to MarineTraffic.com. The stowaways may be able to stay in Spain if they can claim asylum, the director of migrant rights organization Walking Borders told Reuters.

New York CNN Business —A new CNN poll shows that three-quarters of likely voters feel like the US economy is in a recession. The technical definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of economic contraction, which the US economy recorded in the first half of the year. Still, the economy feels bad to the majority of Americans ahead of next week’s midterms. But that’s still the highest since the early 1980s, and it’s the first time many younger people have ever experienced inflation. But that dip may not be enough to buy Democrats any goodwill among voters, given the elevated costs of every other necessity.

the Extra-Terrestrial” celebrates its 40th anniversary, Henry Thomas, who starred as Elliott in the film, is reflecting on the movie and the fame that came with it. Thomas spoke to CNN this week as an updated 4K Ultra HD version of the movie was released. MADRID, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Spanish lenders are open to extending loan repayments for vulnerable households that experience a rise of at least 30% in variable mortgage costs, three sources with knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday. The proposal is part of a wider set of measures aimed at helping exposed families cope with an increase in interest rates and rising cost of living that banks are discussing with government. "Households earning not more than 24,300 euros a year would be eligible to extend the lifespan of mortgage repayments," one of the sources said. The banking association AEB and the savings banks association CECA declined to comment. "As it stands with this proposal, you may even end up paying more interest in the long term", Suarez said.
Oct 17 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates on Monday summoned the acting head of the mission at the EU delegation to the UAE, asking for explanation of what it said were racist comments made by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell last week. The UAE foreign ministry said the remarks were "inappropriate and discriminatory" and "contribute to a worsening climate of intolerance and discrimination worldwide" UAE state news agency (WAM) reported. At a press conference on Monday, Borrell denied that his message was racist or colonialist, news agency EFE reported. The comments were intended to reject the idea of 'fortress Europe' and to encourage students to engage with the world, he said.
CNN —A criticism of US lawmakers by the President of South Korea has gone viral on social media – after a hot mic picked him up using an expletive. In a video published by South Korean television broadcaster MBC on its official YouTube channel on Thursday, Yoon can be seen walking along the stage after chatting with Biden before turning to his aides and speaking. The Global Fund is an international organization trying to defeat HIV, TB and malaria across the developing world and Yoon’s remark appears to be a reference to Biden’s pledge to contribute $6 billion, which would require Congress approval. Many social media users have taken to mocking Yoon, while the expletive he used has become a popular search term on the South Korean online portal Naver. His remarks were not lost on members of the opposition liberal party who commented on the issue at Thursday’s National Assembly.
But it’s coming under huge pressure from developed countries to abandon fossil fuels and shift to renewable energy in order to help save the climate. AKINTUNDE AKINLEYE/EPA-EFE/ShutterstockLike the United States, Europe and Britain, Nigeria sees a prominent role for renewable energy, notwithstanding its investments into gas power. “In Nigeria, clean energy is central to our government’s plan to transition to net-zero emissions,” Osinbajo, the vice president, continued. In Nigeria, energy poverty is itself a major driver of emissions, according to Olu Verheijen, the founder of Lagos-based energy advisory business Latimer Energy. This means that in some cases, certainly for Nigeria, gas has an important role to play in providing power.
