PORT-AU-PRINCE, June 16 (Reuters) - As Haiti's police struggle to contain powerful armed gangs, a disagreement between the Dominican Republic and Canada spilled out into the public on Friday, further complicating an international plan to boost Haiti's outgunned police force. A day after Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced plans to set up a Canadian office to coordinate support for Haiti's national police this summer in the neighboring Dominican Republic, her Dominican counterpart denied any deal authorizing an office on Dominican territory. In a post on social media, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez said no deal been struck, adding that the Dominican government has not even discussed such a plan. The statement did not say whether the location would be in the Dominican Republic, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti. On Thursday, Joly announced plans to coordinate a police support operation from a base in the Dominican Republic and thanked Alvarez for providing it, according to a transcript from a Canadian government official.

The biggest challenges have been identifying geographic pockets of immigrant populations, finding ways to reach them and helping any of those interested navigate the complex military recruiting applications and procedures. The Air Force effort began this year, and the first group of 14 graduated from basic training and were sworn in as new citizens in April. As of mid-May there were about 100 in basic training who had begun the citizenship process and about 40 who had completed it. Thomas said the program required changes to Air Force policy, coordination with U.S. By the time Air Force recruits finish their seven weeks of training, the process is complete and they are sworn in as American citizens.

CNN —Shocking footage of a young child hanging from the arms of a detained woman through the barred door of a truck in the Dominican Republic has generated outrage in the country. Social media videos of the incident, which occurred Saturday in the municipality of Santo Domingo, showed the child dangling off the back of a moving immigration control truck used by local authorities to transport detainees. The child only appears to be kept from falling by a woman inside the vehicle, whose arms stretch through the bars of the door. An immigration agent sitting on the back platform of the truck, next to the child, seems to be speaking as he extends a hand and rests it on the child’s shoulder. The woman, a Haitian national, was released after the agents became aware of the situation, it also said.

On a blustery April morning in Long Branch, N.J, Lynn Mesler pointed to a Salt Life store that had opened six days before on Ocean Avenue North, across the street from the Atlantic Ocean. Ms. Mesler, 59, who was visiting Long Branch from Manahawkin, N.J., said she had recently bought a bunch of Salt Life stuff online for her boyfriend to wear on a vacation to the Dominican Republic. “I wanted him to look colorful and be comfortable,” Ms. Mesler said, adding that she became aware of Salt Life because she had seen the logo frequently. That logo, which features Salt Life written in a brash, pointy font, was inspired by a neck tattoo. Soon after Salt Life was founded in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2003, its logo started to appear on bumper stickers and T-shirts.
In March, lessor Airborne confiscated four of Flair Airlines' planes because of late payments. A low-cost Canadian upstart airline had four of its planes repossessed by New York-based aircraft lessor Airborne Capital on March 11, forcing the carrier to cancel multiple flights and leaving a trail of disgruntled passengers behind. Flair Airlines CEO Stephen Jones blamed "behind the scenes" scheming between the airline's competitors and Airborne Capital for the repossession of four of Flair's Boeing 737 planes. It's not the first time Flair has clashed with other Canadian airlines. US investment firm 777 Partners owns a 25% stake in Flair Airlines, which was cause for concern for the CTA.

I had two months, basically, to make sure I felt good enough about the way I look. If I’d thought my waist was too big, or that I was too wobbly, I wouldn’t have done it. Also, I went to the tanning booth and had a very light spray tan, something I’ve never done. All these people were prodding me and talking about “the girls.” I have never called my breasts “the girls” in my life. It doesn’t have as much to do with blatant sex as with a self-assurance that started when I was a child.
Two dozen National Guard troops quickly set about stretching coils of barbed wire across the cement base of the bridge where the migrants had been. Under the order known as Title 42, U.S. authorities could quickly turn back migrants without giving them a chance to seek asylum. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday said the number of migrants crossing the border fell by half since the end of Title 42. WASHINGTON, May 9 (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) deliveries fell to 26 airplanes in April, less than half of the previous month's total, after a manufacturing defect forced the company to halt some shipments of its bestselling 737 MAX passenger jet. Deliveries of the MAX, which had climbed to 52 narrowbody jets in March, dropped to 17 planes last month. That left passenger jet deliveries for the U.S. planemaker at their lowest level since July 2022, as well as below the 35 planes delivered last April. Boeing Chief Financial Officer Brian West told investors in an earnings call last month that MAX deliveries would slow through the second quarter, but then grow to about 40 jets per month, with sequential quarterly improvement in the second half. Boeing has delivered 156 jets over the first four months of 2023, including 128 MAXs.
The all-inclusive resorts are happy to oblige. “Primarily, the difference is in the location, the higher level of accommodations and more personalized guest services — not to mention bragging rights,” said Mr. Fareed, the hospitality consultant. Big-name hotel brands including Marriott and Hyatt are entering the scene with their own ultraluxe all-inclusives. W Hotel (part of Marriott) is planning its all-inclusive Dominican Republic debut in 2025, while Hyatt is opening its new Inclusive Collection portfolio of resorts in Portugal, Mexico and Bulgaria. It follows in the footsteps of the Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu, an upscale all-inclusive estate that opened its doors in 2019 in a wooded park 45 minutes outside Paris.

REUTERS/Amanda Andrade-RhoadesWASHINGTON, May 3 (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday urged the U.S. Trade Representative and State Department to eliminate investor-state dispute settlement provisions from current and future trade deals and to intervene on behalf of Honduras against a U.S. company's nearly $11 billion claim against the country. In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Trade Representative Katherine Tai seen by Reuters, 33 lawmakers said that investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) systems in trade deals constitute a "problematic corporate handout" that violates countries' sovereignty and democracy rights. The Democrats signing the letter said the case could require impoverished Honduras to pay billions of taxpayer dollars to a company that has "weaponized" the dispute settlement provisions. The dispute settlement provisions had been a way to protect U.S. firms from abrupt changes in trading partners' government policies by providing recourse through arbitration. The letter cited Georgetown University research tallying $27.8 billion in ISDS settlement orders against Latin American governments, with Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico and Ecuador the worst hit.

Criminals are using lax gun laws in the United States, specifically in Florida, to traffic guns to Haiti. A UN report found that the United States is the "principal source" for guns and munitions in Haiti. "Weapons are frequently procured through straw man purchases in US states with looser gun laws and fewer purchasing restrictions." Handguns that sell for $400 to $500 in the United States can be resold for up to $10,000 in Haiti, according to the report. Florida recently became the 26th state in the United States to legalize permitless concealed carry.
