SAN DIEGO — The Home Depot agreed to a nearly $2 million settlement in a case that alleged it overcharged customers, charging more for items at checkout than the items' advertised prices. In an emailed statement responding to a request for comment about the settlement, Home Depot said, “To ensure consistency for our customers, we’ve updated the timing of our price changes." The settlement includes $1.7 million to be divided among the district attorneys' offices of Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Alameda, San Bernardino and Sonoma counties for consumer law enforcement. "This settlement is a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and underscores our commitment to safeguarding the rights of consumers in our community," Gascón said. New York officials released Monday forensic sketches and informational flyers about a possible new victim in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, in an effort to identify them and get new leads in the roughly 20-year-old homicide. The remains of the victim, referred to as “Asian Doe,” were found in 2011 near the bodies of at least 10 others near Long Island, New York’s Gilgo Beach. Long Island architect Rex Heuermann, 61, was arrested last year in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Heuermann was initially charged with killing three women — Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Melissa Barthelemy — and dumping their bodies near Gilgo Beach. Authorities previously disclosed that “Asian Doe” was wearing women’s clothing, but did not provide further details.

CNN —A district court judge in San Antonio ruled against the Texas attorney general’s attempt to stop one of the state’s biggest counties from mailing voter registration applications to a large number of unregistered voters. Judge Antonia Arteaga on Monday dismissed a temporary restraining order and a temporary injunction filed by Attorney General Ken Paxton as moot, since Bexar County had already mailed out the applications. County commissioners approved a plan on September 3 to mail roughly 210,000 applications through a contract with an outside vendor. The attorney general argued in his challenge that it was illegal for the county to arrange for the unsolicited, mass mailing of voter registration applications. His office also launched an election integrity unit in 2018 investigating allegations of voter fraud, but it has yielded few convictions.

Such violations are called “scanner violations,” the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said in a press release Thursday. “False advertising and unfair competition are serious offenses that undermine consumer trust and distort the marketplace,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. A person was shot and and suffered a life-threatening injury Thursday after tackling a pro-Israel demonstrator in Newton, Massachusetts, the district attorney said. A member of the demonstrating group, a 47-year-old man from Framingham, then shot that person, she said. Asked at a news conference if the person shot was anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian, Ryan said, "I think it’s too soon to get into that." The person who was shot, who has not been identified by authorities, sustained injuries that are life-threatening and was at a hospital Thursday night, Ryan said. Michael Proctor, the Massachusetts state trooper suspended over his conduct while he was investigating Karen Read, will not testify in another high-profile case on which he was a lead investigator, prosecutors said. The department devoted dozens of additional officers to investigating the case, the filing says. The filing cites Proctor’s testimony in the Read case, in which he testified that he made derogatory comments about Read to his family, friends and supervisors, and it says the prosecutor’s office is reviewing data extracted from the trooper’s cellphone. The agency had opened an internal affairs investigation into allegations of "serious misconduct" raised at trial, a state police official said at the time. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud, interstate transportation for a scheme to defraud and unlawful monetary transaction, the prosecutor's office said.

ATLANTA — The judge overseeing the election interference case against Donald Trump and several co-defendants in Georgia has thrown out three counts in the indictment — including two counts brought against the former president. “President Trump and his legal team in Georgia have prevailed once again,” he said in a statement. But a lawyer for Trump confirmed that McAfee’s decision would also apply to Trump. The case is currently on hold as Trump and other defendants appeal McAffee’s decision not to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. In March, the same judge dismissed six other counts in the indictment, including three against Trump because the indictment lacked sufficient detail.

Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, is alleged to have set off three different fires last week, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Thursday. One of those fires evolved into the Line Fire, that has continued to burn after eight days, while the other two were contained. According to Dicus, investigators were able to tie Halstenberg to the scene of all three fires. The investigation was indicative of “significant arson behavior” and it is possible Halstenberg could be tied to other fires, Dicus said. If convicted on the aggravated arson charge, Halstenberg could be sentenced between 10 years to life in prison.

A suburban Philadelphia man has been accused of drugging at least five women and a teenage girl he met on a dating site and sexually assaulting them at his home while they were impaired, authorities said. Andrew Gallo of Levittown, Pennsylvania, was arrested Wednesday, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said. “This is a young woman’s worst nightmare,” Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn said at a news conference Wednesday announcing the charges. All of them described feeling strange after consuming the drinks, according to the criminal complaint and the district attorney’s office.
