Hassabis told Thiel that the best chess players understood the unique strengths of the bishop and the knight, even though both pieces hold the same value. It was not only DeepMind's first significant investment but also one of Thiel's first investments outside the Silicon Valley orbit. He felt the power of Silicon Valley was sort of mythical, that you couldn't create a successful big technology company anywhere else.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Google DeepMind has used artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the structure of more than 2 million new materials, a breakthrough it said could soon be used to improve real-world technologies. The discovery and synthesis of new materials can be a costly and time-consuming process. DeepMind’s AI was trained on data from the Materials Project, an international research group founded at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2011, made up of existing research of around 50,000 already-known materials. Having used AI to predict the stability of these new materials, DeepMind said it would now turn its focus to predicting how easily they can be synthesised in the lab.

Charlie Munger, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 99, had a last big call on AI: it's overhyped. It was counterintuitive, but his last big call could be right: AI is overhyped. Google has now rolled the lab in with another AI division, Google Brain, and no longer explicitly breaks out financials. AI has still to prove out its caseFinally, there's the big question of whether the technology will deliver on its big promises. The tool uses data on the climate, water and soil of a particular location to measure how viable the landscape will be for growing in the coming years. “The way we think about AI is it’s a time and effectiveness multiplier to the solutions for climate change,” Gupta told CNN. But for all of AI’s promise, the infrastructure that supports the technology — data centers filled with rows of powerful, energy-sucking computers — could itself be a strain on the environment. For now, the amount of energy used to power AI is relatively small compared to what’s consumed by transportation or buildings. Data center operators like Google are already thinking about how to reduce the resources needed to power the computing behind their AI models.

How Meta could benefit from the OpenAI shakeup

It could help Meta boost its open-source Llama AI initiatives, as some companies look to diversify away from relying on a single company's large language model. Its AI research team is considered, with Alphabet's DeepMind, one of the most esteemed groups in the tech industry. Yann LeCun, Meta's AI chief, responded to the post with a curt "Yup." Meta could benefit if companies continue to seek multiple AI vendors, much like firms now rely on multiple cloud providers. The more developers access and improve Llama, the more Meta can potentially lower its overall operating and technology research costs, among other benefits.

NEW YORK, Nov 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Microsoft (MSFT.O) boss Satya Nadella’s stressful weekend is probably only the beginning. A lack of corporate governance protections left Nadella with few options to salvage his company’s $13 billion investment in OpenAI. As a 49% owner of OpenAI, Microsoft could have hedged itself by getting more directly involved in oversight. Recruiting Altman is at least a better outcome for Microsoft than standing by and watching him go to Google, a rival startup or opening his own AI shop. Money and salesmanship are two essential elements of developing AI, but so are the proper controls, risk management and strategic clarity.

All three are senior or longstanding employees at OpenAI, suggesting that the company may face a talent drain after Altman's shock firing. OpenAI announced that Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear would become interim CEO of the AI firm, after negotiations to bring Altman back broke down.
