CNN —As fighting continues between Israel and Hamas, many may wonder why this war — and, more broadly, the decades-long Israeli–Palestinian conflict — is so intractable. A feature of sacred values is that they cannot be traded-off with profane values like material incentives to compromise. When each side was offered foreign aid to incentivize the deal, it produced a backfire effect among those who held sacred values. When a symbolic concession was offered, those holding sacred values were less angered and disgusted by the deal, and support for violent opposition plummeted. Carrot-and-stick policies, such as the promise of foreign aid coupled with the threat of sanctions, backfire when presented to those holding sacred values.

He's vice president and chief culture officer at the insurance giant Chubb, and diversity, equity, and inclusion work falls under his remit. Page used an example of walking into a room of people and giving them all a pair of size 10 shoes. So I really came to this work as a business leader with a lot of experience running a business. There are a few instances where there's important business information that you need to impart, and you may have a difficult time getting the attention of leadership. I think the challenge around this is that if you're really committed to your view on this, then you have to find a different way.

There are few national conversations more frustrating than the fight over D.E.I. has become yet another catchall boogeyman, a stand-in not just for actual policies or practices designed to increase diversity, but also a scapegoat for unrelated crises. The idea, if it can be called that, was that efforts to diversify airline work forces had contributed to the accident. In fact, the airline industry is much safer than it was when it was a virtually all-white enterprise decades ago. But that’s not the entire story when it comes to controversy over D.E.I.
