A US judge blocked the pending $8.5 billion merger of US handbag and accessories maker Tapestry and Capri on Thursday, a victory for the US Federal Trade Commission in an industry where merger challenges are rare. Tapestry fought those claims, saying the deal was spurred by an intensely competitive US handbag industry and was needed to fight back against European players like Gucci, which are increasingly grabbing market share. The ruling in effect permanently blocks the proposed deal, Tapestry’s lawyers said in court documents. Those brands are: Tapestry’s Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman; and Capri’s Versace, Jimmy Choo and Michael Kors. The ruling follows approval of the merger by regulators in Japan and the European Union earlier this year.

The trajectory of mortgage rates may help determine what happens to down payments. Borrowing costs, savings rates sway down paymentsAny analysis of down payments that doesn't mention mortgage rates would be incomplete. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate hit a two-decade high of 7.8% last October and has steadily fallen for most of the last 12 months. AdvertisementBut there's a less rosy explanation for lower down payments: buyers can't afford to pay more. The personal savings rate in the US was 4.8% in August, according to Realtor.com, which was up from the inflation-stretched low of 2% in June 2022.

CNN —Every year, thousands of South Koreans – mostly middle-aged men – die quietly and alone, cut off from their family and friends. “Loneliness and isolation are not just individual problems, but tasks that society must solve together,” Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon said in a news release. The phenomenon, known by the Japanese term “hikikomori,” has become increasingly common; South Korea had up to 244,000 such recluses in 2022 by one estimate. The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen 45 percent since the late 1990s, as factories have shuttered or moved to Mexico, China and elsewhere. Canton represents the kind of struggling manufacturing town that once churned out American products. They argue that the candidates’ proposals aren’t enough to reverse the trends — globalization, free trade agreements, automation and other technological changes — that caused manufacturing jobs to leave America in the first place. That helps explain why, despite Mr. Biden’s subsidies, the number of manufacturing jobs nationwide remains 34 percent lower than it was in the late 1970s. Modern manufacturing jobs also often require a postsecondary education.

The “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania have paved the path to the White House for the last two Democratic presidents. Recent discussions have centered on the possibility of an anomaly happening this year with just part of the blue wall breaking its way. “We absolutely are competing to win Michigan,” Harris campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said, noting Harris’ presence there this week. The blue wall states have been pivotal to elect presidents in the last several elections. “Those three, the blue wall states, almost always stay together, but this year it’s an extraordinarily tight race.

And the poll also showed that nearly 18% of Black voters remained undecided, in a state where Black voters could make up roughly 30% of the electorate or more.

He also found that women will comprise nearly 52% of all eligible voters, which should help Harris. (North Carolina is the sole swing state where he found that they had increased as a portion of eligible voters since 2020.) The groups that Harris needs to give her winning margins are the non-White and college-educated White voters (especially women in each case). “I think Gen Z women, including White women, are very committed to an inclusive democracy,” she said. But this history clearly shows it is likely that the changes in the composition of the eligible electorate Frey has documented will closely track the shifts in the configuration of the actual electorate.

New York CNN —Target is slashing prices on more than 2,000 items, marking the second time this year that the retailer cut customer costs as it attempts to attract inflation-weary shoppers ahead of the holiday shopping season. Some prices have dropped effective immediately on a number of items, including home goods, beauty products, food, beverages and toys. In a press release, Target said it “routinely adjusts its prices to remain competitive in markets across the country” and the discounting will continue through December. In May, Target announced it was going to slash prices on 5,000 items but ended up surpassing that number, cutting prices on 8,000 products. However, there’s some good news for stores: Spending at US retailers climbed 0.4% in September from the prior month, according to government data released last week.

Last week, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Bloomberg that such speculation was "wide of the mark." Several entrepreneurs and investors have warned that the U.K. could face an exodus of technology entrepreneurs as a result of the reported tax changes. Calling the government's plan on capital gains tax the "biggest" issue for entrepreneurs, Stebbings said: "I know fewer entrepreneurs will be here. Not everyone agrees that capital gains tax shouldn't be increased to raise public finances. The analysis found that capital gains tax was not a primary driver of investment decisions, with entrepreneurs more focused on issues like access to financing, market opportunities and broader economic conditions.

Analyst Nick Lai, who has an overweight rating on the Chinese electric vehicle maker, added Xpeng to the Wall Street bank's positive catalyst watch list in a 17-page report out Sunday. This comes amid JPMorgan's forecast that EREVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles combined will make up about 60% of the new energy vehicle market by 2030 – almost double last year's figure. Another event that could drive the stock higher is Xpeng's third-quarter results next month, which Lai thinks will show expanded gross profit margins. Heading into 2025, Xpeng should see more volume growth, JPMorgan said, with the bank forecasting 72% volume growth in 2025. As a result, Xpeng should see positive free cash flow next year and a profit in 2026, according to Lai.
