There are cracks forming in the US jobs market
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —The pandemic threw the US job market into chaos, but four years later, things finally seem to be back to normal. Most indicators support the idea that the labor market is no longer overheated and could easily maintain a new normal of steady, but slower growth. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 4.1%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. “This is a labor market that’s otherwise moderated,” Nick Bunker, director of North American economic research at Indeed, told CNN. The same goes for the prime-age labor force participation rate, which at 83.7% also is the highest in 23 years.

After reaching a peak around $320 in July 2023, META spent four solid months bouncing between price support around $280 and retesting the July peak. With this week's earnings beat, we'll likely see META test the upper end of this new trading range. Here we can see the recent trading range in much better context, but we can also see weakening momentum conditions. The declining momentum on the weekly chart suggests a serious headwind to META's attempt to break out of its recent trading range. The 2023 range was finally eclipsed once we saw an upside break above a clearly defined resistance level.

As oil rebounds following oversold conditions, it provides an opportunity for buyers to step in, especially with the potential for geopolitical tensions to rise. And one energy stock that looks set up to potentially break out is Phillips 66 (PSX) after largely trading in a range since February. However, it is now just starting to break out from that trading range and starts to target the $170 highs as upside targets. With a higher debt to equity ratio, PSX has a higher implied leverage than its peers, which provides a higher upside potential if oil prices recover from its recent pullback. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

CNN —Two suits, two women, one message: “Hotties for Harris.” At least that was the phrase scrawled across banners at Kamala Harris’ campaign rally in Atlanta Tuesday night. Minutes later, Harris walked onto her podium to rapturous applause — also in a blue pantsuit. From being endorsed by Charli XCX and co-opting the album of the summer, “Brat,” to capitalizing on the 32.3 million-strong fandom of Megan Thee Stallion, her advisors have been honing in on the 18-27 demographic. Kamala Harris' icy blue suit seemed twinned in a way with Megan's cropped version. It’s hard to picture Clinton signing off on a decision to have Megan Thee Stallion “shake cheeks,” as one fan on Instagram wrote, in a cropped suit at a rally.

The Real Estate Select Sector ETF (XLRE) is the worst performing sector ETF in 2024, up about 3.5% right now. The ETF is net-flat going all the way back to September '22. But, it has been the best sector ETF in July, with a monthly gain of nearly 8%. The answer is a resounding yes… if the breakout in the SPDR S & P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) to new highs is any indication. And if rates are going to keep declining, then XLRE will have a strong tailwind to potentially catch up to XHB once again.

DuPont's water and protection segment may have seen a year-over-year decline in sales, but what matters most is that revenue was up 8% sequentially. Notably, DuPont's Water Solutions and Tyvek medical packaging businesses in China — an economy that's lately been a thorn in the side of so many companies — helped drive the quarter-over-quarter expansion. While there's been speculation that DuPont's water business is attracting interest from peers, management said the company has not had conversations about an outright sale. The range for operating EBITDA was raised to $3.06 billion to $3.11 billion, up from $2.9 billion to $3.05 billion previously. DuPont's third-quarter guidance of roughly $3.2 billion in sales, $815 million in operating EBITDA and adjusted EPS of $1.03 essentially matched expectations.

Earnings-revision breadth, cited as a bullish market driver, has deteriorated, Morgan Stanley says. But industrial stocks are still uniquely positioned to outperform, the firm says. AdvertisementA key driver of stock-market bullishness is deteriorating, although there are still opportunities available, Morgan Stanley wrote in new research. The firm is referring to earnings-revision breadth, which enjoyed an increase that coincided with a rally in small-cap stocks in recent weeks. The chart below shows a deceleration in earnings-revision breadth for S&P 500 companies in recent months:Morgan Stanley"This does not offer support for a broad cyclical rotation," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote.

Do you remember the 2023 recession? But back in 2022 there were so many confident predictions of imminent recession that I wonder whether some people have the vague sense that they must have come true. I could have told you at the time that this analogy was wrong, and in fact I did. The inflation doomerism of 2022, I’m tempted to say, was the least responsible economic projection, at least by mainstream economists, made in the past 40 years. When it inverts — when long-term rates are lower than short-term rates — this has historically predicted a recession (recessions are the shaded areas on the chart):

The cyclical bull rally starting in October 2022 is expected to last into 2025, according to Ned Davis Research. The firm highlights a chart that shows the historical trends of cyclical bull market rallies, and when they typically end. The research firm published a note last week that included a chart illustrating prior cyclical bull rallies within a secular bull market, as is the current rally. To monitor the current health of the bull rally in stocks, the research firm suggests investors closely monitor earnings results. Ultimately, the recent correction "should give way to another leg higher in the continuing bull market," Ned Davis Research concluded.

Nearly 1,000 American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian children died while attending boarding schools that were set up by the U.S. government for the purpose of erasing their tribal ties and cultural practices, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Interior Department. “For the first time in the history of the country, the U.S. government is accounting for its role in operating Indian boarding schools to forcibly assimilate Indian children, and working to set us on a path to heal from the wounds inflicted by those schools,” Bryan Newland, the department’s assistant secretary for Indian affairs, wrote this month in a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland that was included in the report. The report calls on the federal government to apologize and “chart a road to healing.” Its recommendations include creating a national memorial to commemorate the children’s deaths and educate the public; investing in research and helping Native communities heal from intergenerational stress and trauma; and revitalizing Native languages. From the early 1800s to the late 1960s, the U.S. government removed Native children from their families and homes and sent them to boarding schools, where they were forcibly assimilated.

To start let's examine the 200-day moving average on the daily chart below shown as a dashed blue line. Looking back to the most recent correction in April, that was the support level of the price-to-moving average spread: 34%. We could be approaching a support level based on this analysis. This could occur by price continuing to move lower along with the moving average trending higher as the recent higher price readings factor into the average. The 50-day moving average of the daily volume totals is clearly in a decline since April.

Companies with disappointing quarterly results are getting punished more than usual this earnings season. This phenomenon underscores the high expectations going into this season as well as a stock market that's viewed by many as overheated. Case in point, shares of Ford Motors plunged more than 18% on Thursday after the automaker came in short of earnings expectations due to warranty costs. "So far this earnings season, the results for many large bellwether companies have been better than the stock reactions," John Belton, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds, said in an email. Investors will be closely watching this week's earnings slate , which includes Microsoft , Meta Platforms , Apple and Amazon .
