The biggest single reduction in the emissions from the new watches came from using clean electricity to manufacture them. Apple on Tuesday said that 300 of its suppliers have now committed to using clean energy for Apple production. But another emissions source was Apple's speedy transportation network, which relies heavily on planes. The company has said previously that a Series 8 watch created 33 kg (73 lb) of carbon emissions, from raw materials to delivery to end customers. Apple has been focused on cutting carbon emissions for some time.

CNN —Apple is expected to debut its iPhone 15 lineup Tuesday at the company’s annual September keynote event, and it could introduce the biggest change to the phone’s design in 11 years. Other iPhone 15 featuresThe entire iPhone 15 lineup is rumored to get the “Dynamic Island” feature — an interactive home for alerts, notifications and various controls — that replaces the notch on top of the screen. Although there are few other rumors circulating about its entry-level iPhone models, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models are expected to get a handful of new features, according to a Bloomberg report. What not to expectWith the new iPhone expected to take center stage, many analysts don’t anticipate Apple will release new iPads or Mac computers until October. Apple's iPhone 15 launch clouded by China problems

The iPhone made up more than half of Apple's $394.3 billion in sales last year, but it faces new challenges with selling in China, the Cupertino, California firm's third-largest market. Huawei wants to gain an edge on Apple with add-on features like satellite calling that relies on China's government-backed network. Apple's current iPhone lineup includes satellite capabilities, though they are meant only for emergency situations. "The truth of the matter is, we're in a very down smartphone market," said Bob O'Donnell, head of TECHnalysis Research. Without using the words "artificial intelligence" to describe the emerging technology, Apple showcased a new line of iPhones and a new watch that included improved semiconductor designs that power the new AI features. In contrast, Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google set ambitious goals for the level of transformation with their AI efforts. The Neural Engine is what Apple calls the building blocks for its chips that accelerate AI functions. The AI components of the watch chip make Siri, Apple's voice assistant, 25% more accurate. The idea is to give people a way to control the Apple Watch when their non-watch hand is busy holding a cup of coffee or walking a dog.

A USB-C charging port on iPhones will match the same charging port on Android phones, newer laptops, iPads, wireless headphones, and other gadgets. The iPhone 15 will be a tough sell in China. And China's homegrown rival Huawei has a new, superfast phone out, the Mate 60. China is Apple's second-biggest single market by sales outside the US, and its third-biggest region behind the US and Europe. Another important metric: China grew faster by revenue than Europe, implying continued prospects for growth for Apple beyond saturated Western markets. The advanced chip inside the new Mate 60 was made by Chinese company SMIC, according to a teardown by Bloomberg.

New York CNN —Shares of Apple fell by 3.4% on Thursday following reports that China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed agencies and companies. The company is set to lose about $200 billion in two days and its stock is currently the worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. China is the largest foreign market for the company’s products and Chinese sales represented about a fifth of the company’s total revenue last year. Apple doesn’t disclose iPhone sales by country but analysts at research firm TechInsights estimate that there were more iPhone sales in China than in the United States last quarter. CNN has reached out to Apple and to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but has not received a response.

The logos of Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft displayed on a mobile phone with an EU flag shown in the background. The European Commission on Wednesday said it designated six tech giants as "gatekeepers" under its new Digital Markets Act — a strict set of rules that could shake up the business models of large digital platforms. Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, Meta and ByteDance will have six months to bring their core platform services into compliance with the obligations laid out in the EU's DMA, the Commission said. The Commission said that it deems Amazon , Apple , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft and China's ByteDance as "gatekeepers." The EU believes that Microsoft's Bing, Edge and Microsoft Advertising platforms and Apple's iMessage service meet the bar to be considered gatekeepers.
