CNN —A Chicago-area woman who was stabbed multiple times in an alleged anti-Muslim attack that left her 6-year-old son dead last week has been released from the hospital, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Chicago office. The family was “targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis, the sheriff’s office said. Shahin was rushed to the hospital with more than a dozen stab wounds, the sheriff’s office said. CNN has reached out to CAIR Chicago and the sheriff’s office for more information. Shahin is from a village in the West Bank, according to Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Chicago.

Lawyers for Trump on Friday asked Chutkan to lift the restrictions while he asks a U.S. appeals court to strike down an order by the judge that they called "breathtakingly overbroad." Chutkan on Monday barred Trump from making public statements that "target" Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting the case, and members of his staff. The order also prohibits Trump from making comments disparaging court staff and potential witnesses in the case.

Garland plans to meet later on Thursday with law enforcement officials in Miami, home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the United States. The Oct. 7 cross-border terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s subsequent bombing of the Hamas-controlled enclave of Gaza have sparked tensions around the world, including in the United States. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has secured a $9 million settlement with Ameris Bank over allegations that it avoided underwriting mortgages in predominately Black and Latino communities in Jacksonville, Florida, and discouraged people there from getting home loans. Garland has prioritized civil rights prosecutions since becoming attorney general in 2021, and the current administration has put a higher priority on redlining cases than before. The anti-redlining effort has now secured $107 million in relief, including the Ameris settlement, which a judge must approve. A $31 million settlement with Los Angeles-based City National in January was the largest for the department. The Ameris case is the first brought by the department in Florida, said Roger Handberg, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Florida.
