Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia has launched one of the largest drone attacks on Ukraine since the war began, mainly targeting overnight the region in and around the capital Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian military, which said all 89 drones fired were shot down. Dramatic video released by the Ukrainian Air Force shows one drone on fire, falling from the sky and landing in a field — causing a large cloud of smoke but no visible damage. “Just like then, today the Ukrainian air defense has withstood and repelled a massive attack by enemy drones,” he said. Since then, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded for allies to provide more air defense systems. We need sufficiently courageous decisions from our partners — enough air defense systems, enough range,” Zelensky added.

A logo is seen on the Boeing stand on the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, south west of London, on July 22, 2024. Boeing is set to report results before the market opens on Wednesday. Analysts are expecting another loss and lower revenue for the aircraft manufacturer that continues to struggle with the fallout from its safety and manufacturing crises. CFO Brian West warned in May that the company would likely burn another roughly $4 billion in the second quarter, similar to the first, largely due to lower production and delivery rates than expected. Boeing was producing its best-selling Max planes a pace in the mid-20s per month in the last few months, far from its target of 38 a month.

Almost 40 police officers were injured in the northwestern English town of Southport on Tuesday evening after a day of mourning for children killed in a stabbing attack was disrupted by far-right protesters. A large group that the police say included supporters of the English Defence League, a far-right extremist organization, began attacking a mosque in Southport on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Merseyside Police Service, which covers the region. Officials said that the targeting of the mosque and the ensuing riot appeared to be linked to online disinformation about the stabbing on Monday, when an attacker killed three children and injured eight other children and two adults at a dance class in Southport. The police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old who was born in Cardiff, Wales, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In line with British law regarding minors, the police did not identify the suspect, and subsequently they warned that a name being circulated on social media was incorrect.

Toby Melville | ReutersFARNBOROUGH, England — Massive airplane orders, hundreds deep in recent years, were absent from this year's biggest air show. One standout was Air Korea's order for up to 50 Boeing wide-body planes, including the 777X, which Boeing is working toward getting certified by regulators. As both manufacturers grapple with production strains, Air Korea CEO Walter Cho quipped during the Boeing order signing: "Whichever comes first will become our flagship, whoever's on time." Boeing has an overall backlog of close to 5,500 planes, while Airbus has more than 8,000 on order. Many airlines from United Airlines to Air India have also stocked up on new jet orders as travel rebounded in the pandemic.

Air New Zealand is waiting for eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners and five Airbus A320neo and A3201neo planes, according to its website. SAF has a lower carbon footprint than traditional jet fuel because it’s made from waste products, where the carbon has already been emitted; or from plants that absorb CO2 as they grow. That was much higher than the 5% reduction target in international aviation emissions by 2030 agreed by 193 countries at a United Nations-backed conference last November. The aviation industry accounted for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Planned production capacity for sustainable aviation fuels will provide just a small fraction of jet fuel demand by 2027,” notes the IEA on its website.

Orban, a nationalist in power since 2010, made the comments during a speech in which he forecast a shift in global power away from the “irrational” West towards Asia and Russia. “In the next long decades, maybe centuries, Asia will be the dominant centre of the world,” Orban said, mentioning China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia as the world’s future big powers. “The EU needs to give up its identity as a political project and become an economic and defence project,” Orban added. The EU opened membership talks with Ukraine late last month, although a long and tough road lies ahead of the country before it can join the bloc. A declaration at the end of the NATO summit this month said the alliance will support Ukraine on “its irreversible path” towards membership.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticised Beijing's "escalating and unlawful actions" in the South China Sea at a summit on Saturday, while his Russian counterpart said Washington has stoked anxiety with its plan for a nuclear deterrence with ally Seoul for the Korean peninsula. Blinken singled out China over its coast guard's hostile actions against U.S. defense treaty ally the Philippines in the South China Sea. The Philippines' small troop presence on a grounded former U.S. navy ship at the Second Thomas Shoal has angered China for years. Blinken discussed Taiwan with Wang and concerns about Beijing's recent "provocative actions", included a simulated blockade during the inauguration of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, a senior U.S. State Department official said.
