This year, 16% of restaurant operators plan to invest in artificial intelligence, including voice recognition, according to a survey from the National Restaurant Association. Then Covid came, which not only accelerated labor costs but also led to a shift away from dining rooms and toward drive-thru lanes. Then there's Presto Automation , the AI drive-thru technology company which disclosed last year in Securities and Exchange Commission filings that it uses "human agents" in places like the Philippines and India to complete orders. This time, McDonald's likely won't be the first mover.

AI systems need lots of computers to make them work. The end result has been that Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have soared 48% since 2019, according to the tech giant’s annual environment report. An October study from Dutch researcher Alex de Vries estimated that the “worst-case scenario” suggests Google’s AI systems could eventually consume as much electricity as the country of Ireland each year, assuming a full-scale adoption of AI in their current hardware and software. It added that data center electricity consumption is currently growing faster than it can bring carbon-free electricity sources online. The company has also used AI to suggest more fuel-efficient routes to drivers using Google Maps.

Several adtech companies have been in deep testing mode with Google's Privacy Sandbox for several months, since Chrome turned off third-party tracking cookies for 1% of its users. Criteo, a demand-side platform that helps advertisers place their ads, was also a Privacy Sandbox grant participant. Criteo forecast that if cookies were switched off now, publishers' Chrome ad revenue would decline by about 60% on average. AdvertisementStill, he added, the Privacy Sandbox already seems to be working better than a completely cookieless environment, "which is promising for an early-stage technology." To be sure, the Privacy Sandbox isn't the only alternative to the advertising ecosystem once cookies are discontinued.

Tightness in labor markets is boosting the use case of robotics, Morgan Stanley says, predicting a boom in humanoids — or robots in human form. "Advancements in AI are transforming the robotics industry," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a June 26 report called: "Humanoids: Investment Implications of Embodied AI." The bank forecasts a humanoid population of 40,000 by 2030, 8 million by 2040 and 63 million by 2050. Morgan Stanley is not alone in its bullish stance on humanoids. Still, Morgan Stanley outlined a number of sectors set to potentially benefit from humanoids, with social care likely to be the largest total addressable market.

London CNN —A British startup may have found the answer to one of the frustrations of driving an electric car — waiting around for the battery to charge. That is much faster than the 20 minutes or so it currently takes some electric cars using a fast charger, such as a Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger. Nyobolt’s battery is compatible with a Supercharger, the startup told CNN. “This is many multiples higher than the warranties of much larger EV batteries on the road today,” it noted. In addition, there are currently “a lot of unknowns” with the niobium battery technology, he told CNN.

Chemix is using machine-learning algorithms to develop EV batteries that can charge more quickly, hold more energy, and last longer than current EV power units. Koeller said the primary advantage of using AI to design EV batteries is that it dramatically speeds up the process. Better EV batteriesDesigning EV batteries is a three-step process, Georgia Tech assistant professor Micah Ziegler told BI. Mueller said that PNNL's collaboration with Microsoft has convinced him that generative AI could have applications far beyond speeding up EV battery design.
