NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee state Rep. Gloria Johnson, a Democrat who shot to national fame after surviving a Republican-led expulsion effort for participating in a pro-gun control demonstration, on Tuesday formally announced that she's running for U.S. Senate. Shortly after the expulsion vote, Johnson quickly noted that likely she avoided expulsion because she was white. Blackburn first won the Tennessee Senate seat in 2018, defeating Democratic former Gov. In the Democratic primary for the Senate seat, Johnson will face off against community activist and organizer Marquita Bradshaw. Bradshaw won the Democratic Senate nomination in 2020, and lost the general election to Republican Bill Hagerty by 27 percentage points.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea in late July for the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, celebrated in North Korea as "Victory Day." Arms negotiations between North Korea and Russia are "actively advancing," the United States said Wednesday, citing new intelligence. "And of course, we'll take action directly by exposing and sanctioning individuals and entities working to facilitate arms deals between these two countries." Any arms deal between North Korea and Russia would directly violate a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions. The Treasury Department announced new sanctions earlier this month targeting three entities tied to a network trying to support arms deals between the two countries and avoid U.S. sanctions.

Higher winds. In a 2018 paper, Dr. Kossin wrote that hurricanes over the United States had slowed 17 percent since 1947. Dr. Kossin likened the problem to walking around your back yard while using a hose to spray water on the ground. Because warmer water helps fuel hurricanes, climate change is enlarging the zone where hurricanes can form. There is a “migration of tropical cyclones out of the tropics and toward subtropics and middle latitudes,” Dr. Kossin said.

The Biden administration is seeking a short-term extension to a landmark science and technology agreement with China despite pressure from some U.S. lawmakers who say Beijing could exploit it to gain a security and military advantage. A six-month extension to the Science and Technology Agreement, or STA, will keep the pact in force as the U.S. seeks "authority to undertake negotiations to amend and strengthen the terms," a State Department spokesperson told NBC News on Wednesday. "If it were to go away, not only would it impede government-to-government cooperation, but it would also put other science cooperation at risk," said Seligsohn, a former environment, science, technology and health counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. China also considers it the enabling document for all other science cooperation with the U.S., including with academic and research institutions. The State Department spokesperson said it was aware of the issues involved with working with China in the are of science and technology.

Reuters reported on Tuesday on a so-called earn-out agreement that was key to Roark clinching a deal for Subway. Roark prevailed over a rival bidding group led by buyout firms TDR Capital and Sycamore Partners, whose final offer was for $8.75 billion including an earn-out, and $8.25 billion without, the sources said. Opinion: What comes next for women’s soccer
  + stars: | 2023-08-20 | by ( Opinion Amy Bass | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
For the first time since 2011, a new champion in women’s soccer has been crowned. Amy Bass Rodney BedsoleSpain came out swinging with vigor and poise in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney’s Stadium Australia, spreading the field, finding gaps in England’s backline and posting early dominant possession percentages. New worldAs the seconds of extra time ticked in the final, we already knew one result: no matter who won Sunday, the exclusive club of Women’s World Cup champions was about to have a newcomer. Jamaica made history at this World Cup because of the Reggae Girlz’ prowess, supported by a viral fundraising effort, not by its own federation. Indeed, it is his job to further the game, including and perhaps especially the women’s game, and not sit and wait to be convinced by women or anyone else.

As Trump racks up indictments, his supporters are threatening and doxxing judges and jurors. Homeland Security alleged that a Trump supporter told a judge overseeing his case "You are in our sights, we want to kill you." Far-right message boards also lit up with violent threats against grand jurors in Georgia after Trump was indicted (again) this week. And as the former president keeps racking up indictments, his most extreme supporters are stepping up their rhetoric too, escalating their threats against judges and jurors involved in handing down those indictments. Other Trump supporters online discussed targeting the grand jurors in another Trump case, according to media reports.

CNN —Judges are being forced into an unprecedented and perilous spot in the middle of an already tempestuous presidential campaign because of rising acrimony over the criminal trials of Donald Trump. Indeed, Trump and his allies are already framing the four indictments against him as an example of election interference. Smith’s prosecutors implicitly admitted this in arguing in the federal election subversion case that there was an overriding national interest in avoiding unnecessary delays – given the identity of the accused. Thorny questions judges must addressThe fateful decisions that judges will be called on to make go far beyond when the trials take place. For instance, one of his lawyers argued that Smith’s election subversion case cannot be fairly tried in Washington, where Trump won only 5% of the vote.

I know exactly where I can find a perfect dress that fits me well and makes me feel great. In “Butts: A Backstory,” the journalist Heather Radke explored the garment industry’s history of trying and failing to standardize sizing for women’s bodies. “Bodies are bespoke, and most clothes made since the 1920s are mass-produced industrial products,” Ms. Radke wrote. While men’s sizing utilizes inches in a straightforward manner, with measurements like inseam and chest, women’s sizes have no consistency from one brand to another. Professor Abigail Glaum-Lathbury of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago put it to Ms. Radke very simply: “Unless your clothes are made for you, they don’t actually fit.”

CNN —Archaeologists have uncovered a 1,500-year-old Teotihuacan village in Mexico City, complete with large concentrations of ceramics and three human burials, Mexico’s National Institute of History and Anthropology has announced. The bodies of one child and two adults were discovered alongside a series of polished bowls with a ring-shaped base in the Teotihuacan style. Using ceramic evidence, experts dated the village to around 450-650, around the same date as the height of Teotihuacan influence. Excavations revealed that the settlement sustained the production of ceramics. Due to the presence of such artifacts, archaeologists believe that the rural village must have had trade links with other Teotihuacan settlements on the shore of Lake Texcoco.
