Girls to the Front!

The book is packed with stories of young women like her, girls whose efforts were documented but have not been popularized, and whose introductions leave you wanting more. After World War II came a generation of youthful reproductive rights activists. We meet Heather Tobis (later Booth), who, at 19, founded the legendary abortion referral service Jane out of her dorm room. She wanted change,” Kahn writes of the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, one of the most famous young voice of our own era. “Something to do; it might be very little but still it would be my own work.” Today, in the book’s words, stories of remarkable girls “abound.” But, as Kahn deftly shows, that’s been the story of these revolutionaries from the start.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court surprised many observers by issuing an opinion that effectively reaffirmed the remaining powers of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The decision was a reprieve for a law that many believed was in danger of being fatally weakened, or overruled entirely, by the conservatives on the court. The Voting Rights Act, along with the 1964 Civil Rights Act, were crucial steps in American democratization, and the laws remain an important institutional means of preserving it. And “Racial Realignment,” by Eric Schickler, shows how a bottom-up alliance of powerful trade unions and groups like the N.A.A.C.P. “South to America,” by Imani Perry, which won the 2022 National Book Award for nonfiction, explores how the history and politics of the South shaped American identity and culture.

Barely six weeks ago, Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar was lying in a hospital bed in France, recovering from spinal surgery. A lumbar issue had been bothering him for some time and, reluctantly, he had decided that endoscopic intervention was required. He had not played a second of competitive soccer since the early days of March, nor has he played since. His teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the veteran Armenian midfielder, has not played for three weeks after picking up an injury in Inter’s semifinal win against A.C. Milan. Still, there is a decent chance that he will be named in the starting lineup for the biggest game club soccer has to offer.

In North America, more than half of 529 bird species have declined, according to one study. Another study of 378 European bird species estimates numbers fell by as much as 19% from 1980-2017. There are birds on mountains, birds in cities, birds in deserts, birds in oceans, birds on farm fields and birds in parking lots. Bird numbers are falling across a broad range of habitats, as these graphs from Europe and North America show. A recovery program has boosted the species' numbers to more than 500, with several hundred living once more in the wild.

If completed, the Mountain Valley Pipeline will be a very large and long-lived methane delivery device. At the end of the line, the methane will be burned in power plants and furnaces, producing carbon dioxide. But now that wind, solar and battery storage are indeed quite ready and, in many places, cheaper than gas, the jig is up. Though the assertions that the pipeline is necessary and good for the climate defy logic, the political calculus is clear enough. Mr. Manchin was also a supporter of another large gas pipeline that would have originated in his state: the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which I have been reporting on since 2019.

The latest surge of dark fleet ships began after Russia invaded Ukraine and the West tried to limit Moscow’s oil revenue with sanctions. The ships most likely sell their Russian oil to China above a price limit set by the sanctions. “The price cap is achieving its dual goals: restricting Russia’s oil revenues while keeping Russian oil flowing, and markets stable and well-supplied,” a U.S. Treasury spokesperson told The Times. The spoofing tankers using American insurance show that the practice is not limited to Russian oil alone. The company, Gatik Ship Management, owns a fleet of 50 newly acquired tankers dedicated to the Russian oil trade, the report said.

What’s the Deal With Men?

THE MALE GAZED: On Hunks, Heartthrobs, and What Pop Culture Taught Me About (Desiring) Men, by Manuel BetancourtToxic masculinity. Yes, masculinity, which is often a patriarchal institution that metes out seemingly impossible social expectations for men and boys, has no shortage of problems. What’s so captivating about it to so many people, including many who are victims of its overbearing norms? “The Male Gazed,” by the queer Colombian writer and film critic Manuel Betancourt, is a smart, refreshing essay collection on the subject, and deals directly and honestly with the paradoxes surrounding the topic of men. Masculinity, Betancourt says, is a concept currently at war with itself.

The Elusive Quest for Black Progress in the U.S.

Du Bois went to the Paris World’s Fair to contribute to a showcase called the Exhibit of American Negroes. Du Bois and the exhibition’s organizers wanted to present a more current image of Black strivers. As the founding editor of The Crisis, the magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Du Bois was near the peak of his influence. When he returned to Greenwood in 1926, Du Bois found that the massacre had not dimmed the community’s spirit. But he was beginning to confront the limits of Black progress, starting to ask questions that would lead to his eventual break with the N.A.A.C.P.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on Saturday issued a travel advisory for Florida, saying that under Gov. Ron DeSantis the state has become “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and L.G.B.T.Q.+ individuals.”The N.A.A.C.P. joins the League of United Latin American Citizens, a civil rights organization that issued a Florida travel warning on Wednesday, and Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group that issued one last month. The N.A.A.C.P.’s travel advisory does not explicitly recommend against travel to Florida. said in a statement on Saturday that the travel advisory was in “direct response to Gov.
Neeva, the privacy-focused search company co-founded by former Google executive Sridhar Ramaswamy, announced Saturday that it is shutting down its consumer search engine and will focus on exploring use cases for artificial intelligence. In a blog post on the company's website, Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan, another Neeva co-founder, wrote that "acquiring users has been really hard." They said this challenge, in addition to the "different economic environment," have made it clear that a business in consumer search is not sustainable. Neeva will explore use cases for generative AI and large language models in search going forward, according to the post. Neeva.com and its consumer search product will shut down over the next few weeks.

The NewsA federal appeals court on Monday temporarily blocked a lower court decision that overturned the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that all health plans fully cover certain preventive health services. The Justice Department had appealed the decision, and the appeals court’s stay will stand while the appeals process plays out. Why It Matters: Preventive health services are popular. While the case is under review, full coverage for preventive services will be legally required. For now, employers will still be required to provide no-cost coverage for preventive services.

In a statement on Wednesday, the partners said that the Phase II dose-finding trial met its primary endpoint of weight loss, the Danish company added. Like the other drugs, BI 456906 works by reducing the effect of a gut hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is involved in regulating appetite and food intake. But BI 456906 also blocks another gut hormone called glucagon. Mounjaro also has a dual mechanism of action, but it blocks yet another gut hormone in addition to GLP-1. According to drug trial database clinicaltrials.gov, participants in the Zealand/Boehringer trial were put into five groups by chance, with four getting different doses of the experimental weekly shot and the fifth getting a placebo.
A fabricated image of a giant man towering above a crowd of people is being shared alongside false claims that it shows the “last Neanderthal giant”, but the image was likely generated using artificial intelligence, experts said. A Facebook post sharing the image states: “This is the last know human Giant Neanderthal!” and adds that Neanderthals “died out” thousands of years ago, so “no Neanderthal's DNA is found in modern times” (here). Contrary to the online claims, Neanderthal DNA has been extracted from these skeletal remains and analysed extensively. The earliest version of the image of a purported “Neanderthal giant” that Reuters could find appears on the official subreddit for Midjourney, an AI-based system that generates images based on text prompts entered by users (bit.ly/423OozQ). The image does not show the last Neanderthal giant, it is likely AI-generated.
The New A.C. Milan Picks Up Where the Old One Left Off

“This club is used to these moments, these emotions. It knows how to be a protagonist.”For Milan, this is the stage on which it belongs. The clubs have been here before: They were paired together in the semifinals in 2003, and again in the quarterfinals in 2007. And yet the rivalry’s return is not testament to how little has changed, but how much. It was still, recognizably, the team that Silvio Berlusconi had built, the fruits of the first modern superclub: experienced, authoritative, impossibly glamorous.
Over 24,000 residents throughout Western Canada have been ordered to evacuate their homes to escape active wildfires in the province of Alberta. Smith activated the Emergency Management Cabinet Committee in response to the wildfires, which has been meeting daily since Friday. All options are on the table, including declaring a provincial state of emergency, Smith added. Fourteen counties and communities have declared states of local emergency, including Brazeau, Grande Prairie, Parkland and Lac Ste. Anne counties, as well as the Beaver Lake Cree Nation.
The company has two oral GLP-1 drugs in mid-stage trials, and aims to choose one for a late-stage trial this year. He forecasts GLP-1s or similar drugs topping $100 billion in annual sales early in the 2030s, with Lilly's product accounting for more than $50 billion in sales. Smaller biotechs are also vying for a piece of the obesity market and hope large pharmaceutical companies will pay up for partnerships. "I don't know if it's $90 billion or $80 billion or $50 billion. The current GLP-1 drugs can cause nausea and vomiting.

US FDA approves first RSV vaccine from GSK

May 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved GSK Plc's (GSK.L) respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, the British drugmaker said on Wednesday, making it the first shot to be cleared for protection against a common respiratory disease that can be fatal for older people. The vaccine was approved for people aged 60 and older, the company said. The approval makes GSK, which has been neck-and-neck with Pfizer (PFE.N) in RSV vaccine development, the first company to tap into a multi-billion-dollar market and puts it ahead of rivals such as Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) and Bavarian Nordic (BAVA.CO). Analysts have estimated the market for RSV vaccines to cross $10 billion by 2030. GSK expects the vaccine to be available before the next RSV season in the United States, Chief Commercial Officer Luke Miels told Reuters on Wednesday before the approval.

In another sign of the deep rift in Mississippi between white state lawmakers and Black residents of its capital, Jackson, the N.A.A.C.P. is suing state leaders over two new laws that it says create a “separate and unequal” structure involving the police and courts in the city. The laws, passed by the overwhelmingly white and Republican Legislature and signed on Friday by Gov. Tate Reeves, also a Republican, establish state control of policing and the judicial system in much of Jackson, something not done in other cities in the state, according to the N.A.A.C.P. The city’s leaders are mostly Black and Democratic, and 80 percent of its 150,000 residents are Black.
April 20 (Reuters) - Cybersecurity company Group-IB has finalised its exit from Russia, the group said on Thursday, cutting ties with its original market in an effort to spur its global expansion ambitions. Already harbouring global ambitions, Group-IB moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2019. Volkov has sold his 10% stake in the Russian company, Group-IB said in a statement. The stand-alone Russian business has been sold to local management and will be operating under the new brand F.A.C.C.T. Group-IB said Sachkov had sold his 37.5% stake in the Singapore entity to members of top management there.
REUTERS/Nadja Wohlleben/File PhotoApril 20 (Reuters) - From cannabis-infused flowers to edible weed gummies, marijuana companies are pulling out all the stops as they eye bumper sales on April 20 - a day referred to as "4/20" in weed culture. Industry insiders expect highest single-day sales ever for the cannabis sector on Thursday even as the industry faces increased scrutiny from lawmakers in the United States. 4/20, derived from a trope for smoking marijuana, typically sees cannabis companies such as High Tide, Canopy Growth (WEED.TO), and Trulieve Cannabis Corp (TRUL.CD) amp up promotions, throwing in exclusive deals and discounts to lure customers. Wholesale cannabis platform Leaflink expects sales of infused flowers and pre-rolled joints to jump 500%-1,000% compared to 2022. According to seasonality data from cannabis data firm BDSA, cannabis retailers see more sales on Thursdays than on Wednesdays and Tuesdays.
