Chinese-made cars wait to be loaded onto a ship for export at Yantai Port on July 12, 2024, in Shandong province of China. BEIJING — China's National Bureau of Statistics on Monday said the country's second-quarter GDP rose by 4.7% year on year, missing expectations of a 5.1% growth, according to a Reuters poll. Industrial production, however, beat expectations up by 5.3% in June from a year ago, higher than Reuters estimate of 5% growth. Urban fixed asset investment for the first six months of the year rose by 3.9%, meeting expectations. The National Bureau of Statistics did not hold a press conference for the data release.

Stakes are high for the meeting, which takes place every five years and is known as China’s third plenum. It has historically been a platform for the party’s leadership to announce key economic reforms and policy directives. China’s gross domestic product expanded by 4.7% in the April to June months, compared to the previous year. But observers of China’s opaque political machine don’t believe there will be fundamental economic reforms this time around. The majority of people with checking accounts (73%) take advantage of the option, according to a 2023 Bankrate.com survey. But if regulatory costs go up for banks, free services like checking may go away, at least if they follow Chase’s lead. Marianne Lake, the head of Chase Bank, told the Wall Street Journal last week that Chase might stop offering free checking and other free banking services. “Consumer banking is predicated on banks providing services for free to consumers such as checking accounts, debit cards and electronic bill paying. Or, if those costs do rise, maybe some banks might decide for various reasons not to eliminate free checking.

For passive investors, it's the best of times: They're seeing new highs on the two major cap-weighted indexes — S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite — with low volatility. But a Republican win yielded a higher return at 15.3%. The S&P 500 fell 9% in 2000 as the tech bubble peaked months before George W. Bush's Republican win. This could increase the chances of a Trump win — at least, that's what the market thinks. The two graphs below from a Goldman Sachs note on July 8 indicate what prediction markets perceive as each candidate's odds of winning following the debate. On that front, consumer discretionary stocks are perceived as riskier under a Trump administration due to the threat of increased tariffs.

The Consumer Price Index likely climbed at a moderate pace in June, which would be welcome news for Federal Reserve officials who are watching for further evidence that they have wrestled rapid inflation under control. After stripping out food and fuel prices for a sense of the underlying trend, the “core” price index is expected to have climbed 3.4 percent compared to year earlier, unchanged from the previous report. Inflation is expected to remain moderate on a monthly basis. Economists forecast just 0.2 percent core inflation on a monthly basis, which would match the reading for May. Fed officials have been watching for evidence that inflation is still coming down as they contemplate when to begin cutting interest rates.

To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. A respectable 24% of the state's power comes from renewable energy, putting it in the top half of states.

On a monthly basis, prices fell overall, and the core price index was up just 0.1 percent. Fed officials have been watching for signs that inflation is still coming down as they contemplate when to begin cutting interest rates. And Thursday’s inflation reading is poised to be markedly cooler than the 9.1 percent rate when inflation peaked at in 2022. Fed officials meet in late July, but few economists expect a move that early. Fed policymakers officially target 2 percent annual inflation, and they define that goal using the Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation measure, which is related to Thursday’s Consumer Price Index but released later in the month.

To evaluate each state's infrastructure, our Top States study considers not just roads, bridges, ports and airports. The state broadband office notes that it is the nation's ninth-largest allocation per capita. The state's power grid is among America's least reliable, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. The severe weather means power outages are frequent as well. Since then, the power outages have persisted, making Maine's grid among the worst in the nation.

"A solid iPhone replacement cycle and spec upgrade should help HH's better sales/earnings in 2025-26," the investment bank's analysts wrote. The bank expects the China-based design and manufacturing giant to see strong margins as demand for its casings increases in tandem with better iPhone shipment cycles between 2025 and 2026. "We lift Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII)'s 2024-26E earnings by 2-6% on potentially better iPhone casing sales and strong AI server contribution," the analysts wrote. "We expect BYDE's casing profitability to gradually improve on better operation efficiency (higher automation rate, improving yield)," the analysts wrote. They have lifted the company's 2025-2026 earnings expectations by 2% to "reflect potentially better iPhone volume, robust auto expansion as well as rising AI-related contribution (server, robot)."

When Donald J. Trump became president in 2017, prices had risen roughly 5 percent over the previous four years. Supply chain problems, shifting consumer spending patterns and other quirks related to pandemic lockdowns and their aftermath collided with stimulus-fueled demand to send costs shooting higher. The years of unusually rapid inflation that resulted have changed the nation’s economic picture in important ways. Businesses are more accustomed to adjusting prices and consumers are more used to those changes than they were before the pandemic, when costs had been quiescent for decades. Beyond that, the Federal Reserve has lifted interest rates to 5.3 percent in a bid to slow demand and wrestle the situation under control.

New York CNN —With interest rate cuts on the backburner, Wall Street is looking to corporate earnings to continue powering the 2024 stock market rally. Analysts polled by FactSet expect second-quarter earnings of S&P 500 companies to grow about 8.7% on average from the prior year. Strong corporate earnings have helped the S&P 500 gain a whopping 16% and notch repeated record high closes this year. Since the Fed isn’t likely to cut rates anytime soon, the onus is on strong corporate earnings to continue driving the market rally. Earnings season kicks off July 12 when big banks including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup report results.

Germany blocks sale of VW gas turbine business to China
  + stars: | 2024-07-04 | by ( Hanna Ziady | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London/Berlin CNN —Germany has blocked the sale of a Volkswagen subsidiary to China on national security grounds, delivering a fresh blow to the already tense relationship with its biggest trading partner. MAN Energy Solutions, part of the Volkswagen Group, said in June 2023 that it planned to sell its gas turbines business to Chinese state-owned CSIC Longjiang GH Gas Turbine Co (GHGT). But a German government review, initiated in September, raised concerns that China might use the gas turbines to power warships, according to Reuters. In November 2022, Germany blocked the sale of one of its semiconductor factories to a Chinese-owned tech company, also citing security concerns. “(We) will now initiate a structured process to close-down the gas turbine division, which will take place over the coming months,” the company added in a statement shared with CNN.

In a year when the S & P 500 is touting a 15.5% advance, small-cap stocks look underwhelming – but investors shouldn't shy away from them, said Julie Biel, chief market strategist at Kayne Anderson Rudnick. "I don't think you want to avoid them — they're part of a balanced diet," said Biel, who is also a portfolio manager at the firm. The benchmark small-cap index Russell 2000 is up roughly 1% year to date, whereas the S & P 500 has rallied almost 16%, largely thanks to the strength of Nvidia and other megacap tech stocks. The S & P 400 mid-cap index has also fallen short of its large-cap counterpart, up a modest 5% in 2024. Biel herself manages a small- and mid-cap growth portfolio and takes a long-term investment approach.

Yet one buffer for the effects of inflation — the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, — may be lower next year. As the rate of inflation moderates, the Social Security COLA for 2025 might be 3%, according to the latest estimate from Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst. That estimate is lower than the 3.2% boost to benefits that more than 66 million beneficiaries saw starting in January. It is also substantially lower than the record 8.7% COLA beneficiaries saw in 2023 and the 5.9% COLA that went into effect in 2022 in response to record-high inflation. Because it is still very early in the year, the Social Security COLA estimate may be subject to change.

Inflation “now shows signs of resuming its disinflationary trend,” Mr. Powell said on Tuesday at the European Central Bank’s annual conference in Sintra, Portugal. It was an optimistic message after the Fed’s fight against inflation hit a speed bump earlier this year. Fed officials have been waiting to see further progress on inflation before they begin to lower interest rates, which are currently set to their highest level in decades, at 5.3 percent. Mr. Powell declined to say exactly when officials could begin to cut borrowing costs, but suggested that they could lower rates if inflation data continued on its current track or if the labor market weakened. “What we’d like to see is more data like what we’ve been seeing recently,” Mr. Powell said, later adding, “We have the ability to take our time and get this right.”
