The Whale Who Went AWOL
  + stars: | 2024-01-14 | by ( Ferris Jabr | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
News of the friendly white whale spread quickly. In early May, a video of the beluga went viral, eventually earning a spot on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” In it, several young women stand on a dock in Hammerfest, speaking excitedly with their hands outstretched just above the water. “Oh, my God!” one woman exclaims as the whale returns a smartphone her friend dropped in the sea. The women cheer and caress the whale, whose mouth continues to hang open. Later viral videos would show him stealing (and returning) a kayaker’s GoPro and playing fetch with a rugby ball.

More than 5,500 tech layoffs less than two weeks into 2024The latest rounds of tech job cuts are occurring across a range of roles and in both Big Tech companies and smaller startups. There were some 262,682 tech industry layoffs recorded in 2023, per Layoffs.fyi data, after 164,969 cuts the previous year. Against that backdrop, the tech industry went on a remarkable hiring spree. Disparate impacts of tech job cuts come under scrutinyAs the tech industry layoffs continue, labor advocates and even lawmakers are taking notice. “Recent findings have consistently shown that minorities and women are vastly overrepresented in industry layoffs,” the letter said.

CNN —The Washington Post’s incoming chief executive and publisher will start the job with a mess on his hands. Workforce tensionsThe Washington Post Guild, the union that represents staffers, has been negotiating with executives on a new contract for a year and a half, but it has yet to reach an agreement. Wages and staff reductions have remained a major sticking point between the two sides, causing dismay among union members with the newspaper’s management. The Post’s management has so far rejected the union’s wage demand and has yet to directly confirm whether remaining staffers’ positions are safe from cuts, the union said. On Thursday, departing staffers were sent an email from management encouraging them to buy official merchandise emblazoned with the Post’s logo.

"I was kind of stuck, and the choice was between working more hours and billing more or working more efficiently," the financial writer told Business Insider. AdvertisementThanks to GPT-4 and other tools, Dong managed to increase his income by more than 50% in 2023 — he's on track to earn CA$238,000 (about $180,000) as of December 2023 — while working fewer hours. His process looks very similar to how it did in 2022 — he was also using AI tools last year. At the end of the day, "your job as a writer is to make the editor's job as easy as possible."

We're adding to our Eaton position after learning about data center news that makes us even more bullish about this power management company. Late Thursday, Blackstone and Digital Realty announced a huge joint venture to develop $7 billion worth of data centers across Europe and North America. News like this is fantastic for Eaton, whose largest end market by sales is Data Centers & Distributed IT, representing about 15% of sales. In the press release announcing the deal, Gray said, "Data centers are experiencing once-in-a-generation demand growth, driven by cloud adoption and the AI revolution." AI data centers require both higher power and higher power density relative to traditional data centers, resulting in three times the electric content.

Journal Editorial Report: Despite denials, the California governor is acting like a candidate. Images: AP/Composite: Mark KellyThursday night’s debate on Fox News between Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis was instructive on many levels. While the Florida Governor stressed his superior record on crime, schools and the economy, Mr. Newsom focused on progressive cultural themes. But one of Mr. Newsom’s economic howlers shouldn’t pass without contradiction. But he also asserted that Florida “taxes low-income workers more than we tax millionaires and billionaires in the state of California.”

"I'm here to tell the truth about the Biden-Harris record," Newsom said in the early minutes of the debate. "It was more of a spectacle than a debate," Akhavan said. DeSantis has also taunted Newsom to "throw his hat in the ring" and run for president in 2024 against President Joe Biden. According to a FiveThirtyEight average of national Republican presidential polls, Trump leads 60% while DeSantis sits at 12.6%. In April, a group of wealthy GOP donors appeared to sour on their support for DeSantis, questioning his presidential prospects.

But “The Great Red vs. Blue State Debate” on Fox News was really a work of speculative fiction. In this reality, maybe Joseph R. Biden Jr., president of America-2, decided to pass the baton rather than dig his fingernails into it. Maybe the former president Donald J. Trump gracefully conceded defeat in 2020 and retired from politics to spend more time with his lawyers. In our timeline, Mr. Newsom is not running for president, though his media ubiquity has spurred speculation that, were an opening to come available, he could fit it into his calendar. Mr. DeSantis is running for president, but he has been losing ground in the polls and supporter momentum.

The oil producers group known as OPEC Plus met on Thursday and failed to announce new production cuts in the face of sagging prices, but Saudi Arabia later said that it would continue to trim output by one million barrels a day through March, in coordination with some other countries that were not named. Oil traders, who may have expected more substantial cuts, had a chilly response to the news. Futures fell for the day, with Brent crude down 0.4 percent, to $82.80 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate falling more than 3 percent, to $75.25. News reports of production cuts preceded the meeting. OPEC Plus said that Brazil, an oil giant that until now has not been part of the producers group, was expected to join next year.

Clearwater, Florida, topped SmartAsset's new list of where baby boomers are moving. All but two cities in the top 10 were in Florida, Arizona, or Nevada, though one was in Montana. Four of the top 10 cities — as measured by boomers who moved in 2022 as a percentage of the total population — were in Florida. Nearly 30% of Cape Coral's total population are boomers, while Clearwater is 27%. Over 28% of Scottsdale's total population are boomers.

For an hour and a half on Thursday night, Gov. The debate in Alpharetta, Ga., was a chance for Mr. DeSantis to hold the spotlight without other candidates for the Republican presidential nomination on the stage. It was a chance for Mr. Newsom to bring his smooth persona and quick wit to a national — and conservative — audience. From the beginning, Mr. Hannity pressed Mr. Newsom on his state’s high tax rates, its loss of residents over the past two years and its relatively higher crime rate. And Mr. DeSantis backed up the moderator in his challenges to how California is run.

The Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO told advertisers who have fled his social media platform X over antisemitic content to "Go fuck yourself!" Several business communications analysts said they couldn't remember a similar case of an executive publicly cursing at their customers. Musk, Tesla and X did not respond to requests for comment. Musk apologized for it and then cursed and dismissed the concerns of the advertisers fleeing the platform. Cappelli said Musk wishes to see himself as a rock star, not a business leader who needs to take account of many constituencies.

Gavin Newsom and Florida Republican Gov. Newsom, 56, has talked about eventually running for president but is backing President Joe Biden 's reelection in 2024. DeSantis is betting big on Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses on Jan. 15 and could still turn things around. Florida is a onetime battleground where fiercely conservative DeSantis easily won reelection last year, while California is the country's largest Democratic state. Last year, amid some unease among Democrats about Biden’s reelection prospects, Newsom’s name was floated as a potential replacement for 2024.

I hesitated to enroll in NYU Stern because of its reputation for being cutthroat and competitive. I've discovered the reality at Stern contrasts sharply with the stereotypesContrary to popular belief, the stereotypes about Stern students are just that — stereotypes. The school's hyperfocused approach, combined with the lack of a "traditional" college campus differentiates it starkly from a conventional college experience.

Ron DeSantis of Florida is accustomed to crushing Democrats in his home state. He romped to a re-election victory last year over a weak Democratic opponent, as Republicans also picked up supermajorities in the State Legislature. But on Thursday Mr. DeSantis will face something new: a brash, confident Democrat, in the form of his California counterpart, Gov. Mr. Newsom, who has feuded with Mr. DeSantis for years, has recently been sharpening his attacks, preparing for the encounter with appearances on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. For Mr. DeSantis, taking on Mr. Newsom is fraught with risks at a time when his presidential campaign seems to be gasping for air.
