Lionel Bonaventure | Afp | Getty ImagesLONDON — Microsoft is handing over the development of all of its best artificial intelligence tools and software to OpenAI, according to one tech CEO — which could be a boon for arch-rival Google. He noted that the so-called transformers that power today's generative AI technologies "all came from Google." Microsoft as an AI 'consultancy'McKinnon added that there's a risk Microsoft's position in AI becomes reduced to that of a "consultancy." Still, Google has a mountain to climb if it's going to achieve commercial success with its own AI investments. Microsoft has effectively become the leader in the push toward foundation AI models given its investment in and partnership with OpenAI.

JPMorgan upped its growth forecast for the custom AI chip market and said Broadcom's dominance in the space is poised to continue. Essentially, these networking chips help make up the plumbing of data centers. The second line of Broadcom's AI business is custom processors, where the company is best-known for co-designing Alphabet's tensor processing units, or TPUs. Google-parent Alphabet and Broadcom have collaborated on the creation of the AI chips for years, with the sixth-generation TPU being announced last month . The AI chips made by market leader Nvidia and rival AMD are more general purpose.

OpenAI is facing controversy. Again.

In today's big story, we're looking at the latest controversy to embroil OpenAI amid a difficult few months for the startup . Their takeaway was simple: OpenAI wants to have it both ways regarding how it's perceived about safety and commercialization. It's structured as a "capped-profit" company governed by a nonprofit, and Altman doesn't hold equity directly in OpenAI. The result, the VC told me, is people feel OpenAI is talking out of both sides of its mouth. It doesn't help that some OpenAI employees joined when that split was closer to 80/20 and favored safety over business, they added.

Ashkenazi has had a 23-year career at Eli Lilly, which in a separate release confirmed her departure. Ashkenazi joined Eli Lilly in 2001 and had been CFO since 2021. She previously served as a CFO for several of the company's global business areas, helping to manage the revenue windfall from Eli Lilly's weight loss and diabetes drugs. Porat had nearly three-decade career as as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, culminating as its CFO, before joining Google in 2015.

During its most recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said more than half of the Fortune 100 companies have already bought an Apple Vision Pro. But while it’s unclear when generative AI will come to the Vision Pro, Nygugen said: “It’s only a matter of time.”That’s because the Vision Pro is merely just another interface – much like a tablet, laptop, or watch, that touches Apple’s ecosystem. The Vision Pro, the tech giant's $3,499 headset, is its first major release since the Apple Watch nine years ago. “Vision Pro just came out a few months ago and it needs to get its feet under it before it really starts to take off,” Llamas said.

Google on Thursday said it will invest $2 billion in Malaysia, with part of the funds going toward building its first data center and cloud region in the country, as the demand for AI and cloud services rises. The Malaysia cloud region is the latest addition to Google's network of 40 regions and 121 zones in the world, the U.S. tech giant said. This comes after Microsoft said earlier this month it will invest $2.2 billion in Malaysia to advance new cloud and AI infrastructure. Tech giants like Google and Microsoft have pledged billions of dollars to Southeast Asia to capitalize on the rising demand for AI and cloud computing services. The AI boom has boosted demand for cloud computing services and data centers, as large amounts of data are required to train AI models and the cloud provides access to vast datasets.
