The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay. "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement. "The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the book," Khan said. In a complaint, the FTC said that DoNotPay, which touted its AI service as "the world's first robot lawyer," failed to live up to that claim. "Since about 2023, Defendants' deceptive sales pitch has said their business model is powered by artificial intelligence ("AI")," the suit says.

Pest control maker Rentokil Initial said Wednesday that Trian partner Brian Baldwin would join the Terminix owner's board effective next week. So with a bearish momentum reading at the May peak, then a bullish momentum reading at the August and September lows, FCX was primed for an upside breakout. The breakout in March 2024, leading to the May peak, suggested a new uptrend as the price exited this basing pattern. The stock gapped higher on Tuesday, pushing above short-term resistance around $46 as well as a trendline using the May and July highs. The stock did become overbought this week, with the RSI popping just above the 70 level on the recent breakout.

Shein said it was "ready to cooperate openly with relevant Italian authorities, providing the necessary support and information to address any inquiries". The probe is the latest in a string of investigations by regulators across Europe into potentially misleading environmental claims by companies, as new European Union regulation seeks to crack down on greenwashing. It also said that Shein's website appeared to emphasize a commitment to decarbonization which seems to be contradicted by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions shown in Shein's sustainability reports for 2022 and 2023.
