Brothers Taylor and Brett Sohns have worked on Wall Street for most of their careers. These parameters can be found in what's called the "prospectus," which is a document that outlines the ETF's investment strategy and potential risk. Consider the process of buying cereal, explained Taylor: "Say you want Lucky Charms. The S&P 500 is down about 18% year-to-date, so we're outperforming that by about 5%," explained Taylor. While you may not do exceptionally well, you'll also never do exceptionally bad, explained Taylor: "In a rip-roaring up market, his product and our product will underperform.
CNBC rounds up some of the boldest price calls for bitcoin in 2023. Bitcoin miners, who use power-intensive machines to verify transactions and mint new tokens, are being squeezed by the slump in prices and rising energy costs. "In prior down markets, miner capitulation has usually indicated major bottoms," Ayyar told CNBC. However, Mobius told CNBC that he is sticking for his $10,000 price call in 2023. "There will be a managed bull market in 2023, not a bubble -- so we won't see the price overshooting as before," she told CNBC.
Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting with members of the Security Council at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside Moscow, Russia November 25, 2022. VanEck is liquidating its Russia-centric exchange-traded funds after the ongoing war in Europe has effectively severed the Russian market from Western investors. Russia ETFs plunged after the country's army invaded Ukraine. VanEck's Russia ETFs — the VanEck Russia ETF (RSX) and VanEck Russia Small-Cap ETF (RSXJ) — were effectively frozen after March 4. VanEck's move follows similar announcements by Franklin Templeton last week and BlackRock in August about their Russia ETFs.
The fed funds rate currently stands in the 4.25%-4.50% range. Plenty of investors believe the Fed will stick to its guns, even if the economy wobbles. The Fed's economic projections showed rates dropping to 4.1% in 2024, higher than estimated three months ago. She is expecting the gyrations that rocked bonds this year to continue, driven in part by investors second-guessing the Fed's commitment to keeping monetary policy tight. "We have a generation of traders that has never seen the Fed not bail it out when push comes to shove."

MEXICO CITY, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Mexico's central bank's monetary policy tightening cycle will likely end in the first half of 2023 with the benchmark interest rate at 11%, before policymakers start to gradually ease rates, a Franklin Templeton executive said on Thursday. Banxico, as the Mexican central bank is called, has increased the key rate by 600 basis points to 10.0% since the middle of 2021 to combat rising inflation. "We believe the terminal rate is going to be at 11% in the first half of 2023," Luis Gonzali, co-chief investment officer of Franklin Templeton's Mexico unit, said during an event with reporters, adding that Banxico will then start to lower rates. MUMBAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Foreign investors are buying into Indian financial firms, lured by the prospects of a fresh credit cycle that may boost the stocks of the country's largest lenders. The optimism is reflected in inflows, with foreign investors buying a net of $1.74 billion worth of Indian financial stocks in November, data released by the National Securities Depository Ltd this week showed. Reuters Graphics"PALATABLE" VALUATIONIndian financial stocks are trading at a premium to their historical average, but that is not necessarily the comparison investors are looking at. This has prompted local and foreign investors to pour money into the domestic equity markets, which hit all-time highs last week. The optimism comes despite financial stocks trading at a premium to their two-year historical average on a price-to-book valuation basis.
The US housing market has dramatically slowed this year. This is because Smead sees a recession unfolding next year as his base case scenario, in which case mortgage rates would reverse. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes usually fall in a recession, as investors flock toward safehaven assets. "And you're more likely to get to 5.3% mortgage rates if you have a recession." Falling mortgage rates will raise affordability for prospective homebuyers, and will wake up demand that has been waiting on the sidelines for better buying conditions, he said.
So in February, she began spitballing creative solutions with two friends, and the three of them landed on a sort-of counterintuitive idea: bitcoin mining. The new 533 kilowatt site in Kenya where 300 kilowatts will be used for bitcoin mining. We're not doing bitcoin for bitcoin," said the lead for bitcoin mining and wallet at Block, Thomas Templeton. Block is also working on a project to make bitcoin mining more distributed and efficient. Making the mining process more accessible has to do with more than just creating new bitcoin, according to Templeton.
Bitcoin could crash to $10,000, a more than 40% plunge from current prices, veteran investor Mark Mobius told CNBC on Thursday. While Mobius expects bitcoin to hover around its current $17,000 level, the move to $10,000 could happen in 2023, he said. "With higher interest rates, the attraction of holding or buying Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies becomes less attractive since just holding the coin does not pay interest," Mobius said via email. "Of course there have been a number of offerings of 5% or higher interest rates for crypto deposits but many of those companies offering such rates have gone bust partly as a result of FTX. So as those losses mount people become scared of holding the crypto coin in order to earn interest."
Charlie Munger called out fraud and delusion in crypto, days after Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX imploded. Warren Buffett's right-hand man said bitcoin and other crypto should never have been legal. He made the incendiary comments in a rare CNBC interview this week, just days after Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX exchange became the latest crypto player to implode. "It's partly fraud and partly delusion — that's a bad combination. I think that's totally crazy.

Historically, big dividend payments have been associated with just a couple of stock market sectors. Franklin Templeton fund manager Matt Quinlan says that's changed in recent years. But inflation and interest rates were extremely low during that period, and it seemed like the growth and spending could go on forever. In a market like today's that's defined by higher interest rates and inflation, which erode returns over time, a solid dividend yield can give buyers a real leg up. He's also run its $24.3 billion Rising Dividends Fund for three years, and its results have been particularly strong across his tenure.
Hedge fund Farallon Capital, for instance, bought nearly 7.8 million shares of Twitter during the quarter that ended Sept. 30, while Franklin Resources, the parent company of mutual fund firm Franklin Templeton, added nearly 2.6 million shares to an existing position of less than 100,000 shares. Shares of Twitter fell to as low as $33 during the third quarter before ending September near $44. The value of Twitter shares jumped 23.2% in October when Musk completed the deal on Oct. 27 by paying $54.20 per share. While some funds reaped short-term rewards, other investors left some potential gains on the table by selling before the October rally in Twitter shares. Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) sold 3.7 million shares of the company, while ClearBridge Investments LLC sold 1.9 million shares.
Beyond a slew of retail earnings reports, the government will report retail sales figures for October on Wednesday. But the most recent Consumer Price Index figures for October provided some relief for shoppers…and Wall Street. Consumer spending rose 1.4% during the third quarter, according to the government’s most recent gross domestic product (GDP) report. A report on housing starts and building permits data for October will come out towards the end of this week. When Home Depot reported its most recent earnings in August, it noted that customers didn’t make as many purchases as they did a year ago.
The stock market just had its best day of the year. We can chalk that up to the Thursday morning inflation data that showed prices cooled faster than expected in October. Specialist trader Chris Malloy (C) gives a price to traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, October 18, 2013. As far as a single day is concerned, yesterday looked like a perfect storm for the stock market. Does the latest inflation report change your outlook on the economy or predictions for what the Fed will do next?
There may be some pain ahead for mutual fund investors in the form of capital gains taxes. "That means funds that have suffered steep falls this year could still distribute capital gains to investors," Welch said. John Hancock will pay double-digit capital gains distributions on several of its funds. Almost a dozen Nuveen funds will make 5% to 10% capital gains distributions, while twice that number of T. Rowe price funds will pay out between 4% and 21%. Passively managed funds may have distributions but they tend to be smaller than actively managed funds, Benz pointed out.
Private real estateThanh Bui, a portfolio manager at Franklin Templeton's private real estate investment unit Clarion Partners, said that it's becoming easier for retail investors to get access to high-quality private real estate. She says the space generally does well when inflation is high, and that private real estate is an effective portfolio diversifier not strongly correlated to stocks, bonds, or public real estate companies. Bui is especially positive on muti-family real estate because there is a huge supply shortage that won't be resolved any time soon. She's also bullish on industrial real estate, where rents are surging because of high demand from e-commerce companies and onshoring. "We view the dividend profile as a way to look at quality of a company.
The tech boom is over, thanks to the pandemic receding and interest rates rising, Larry Summers said. The ex-Treasury chief predicted the FTX fiasco will lead to greater crypto regulation. He warned some of the recent excesses in the tech sector won't return until the next speculative boom, if at all. Investors need to reset their expectations after years of venture capitalists subsidizing companies' user acquisition with zero regard for profits or sustainable growth, he continued. Summers also touched on the financial troubles of Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX and Alameda Research, which have roiled cryptocurrency markets this week.

[1/3] The logo for Google LLC is seen at the Google Store Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City, New York, U.S., November 17, 2021. A strong dollar has hurt the overseas profits of large firms, while soaring inflation has prompted interest rate hikes and companies to raise product prices, even as consumers have been forced to cut spending. Google's results bode ill for Facebook parent Meta Platforms (META.O), which is especially reliant on advertising and reports results on Wednesday. Last week, its smaller rival Snap Inc (SNAP.N) forecast no revenue growth for the holiday quarter, setting off warning bells in the social media industry. Shares in Spotify (SPOT.N), which also warned on slow advertising growth, slid 4%.
