Lin was one of three Americans deemed by the US State Department to have been wrongfully detained in China. “We welcome David Lin’s release from prison in the People’s Republic of China,” a spokesperson for the US State Department said in a statement Sunday. While in prison, Lin received several sentence reductions and was scheduled to be released in 2029, according to the Dui Hua Foundation. “I am extremely glad to hear David Lin was freed,” Rep. Michael McCaul said Sunday in a statement on social media.

Antimicrobial resistance happens when pathogens like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to evade the medications used to kill them. A death attributable to antimicrobial resistance was directly caused by it, while a death associated with AMR may have another cause that was exacerbated by the antimicrobial resistance. For this combination – the antibiotic methicillin and the bacteria S. aureus – the number of attributable deaths nearly doubled from 57,200 in 1990 to 130,000 in 2021. The researchers estimated that, in 2050, the number of global deaths attributable to antimicrobial resistance could reach 1.9 million, and those associated with antimicrobial resistance could reach 8.2 million. Strathdee saw firsthand the effects that antimicrobial resistance can have on health when her husband nearly died from a superbug infection.

In addition, Spectrum pledged to give customers automatic credits for internet outages that are out of their control or when the company's customer service doesn't live up to its promises. That's in part because broadband customer growth at providers including Charter and Comcast has struggled, according to the companies' earnings reports. Spectrum Mobile has 8.8 million total lines and has grown rapidly due to enticing promotional deals and increased mobile usage on reliable Wi-Fi networks, the company said. The Winklevoss twins, Coinbase and Ripple didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Huge jump from 2020Delmore, who has been assembling reports on crypto donations in the 2024 election for blockchain analytics platform Breadcrumbs, told CNBC that industry spending is nearly double where it was in the mid-terms — more than $190 million in the 2024 election versus $98 million in the 2022 election. It's nearly 13 times spending in 2020 of $15 million — a figure based on a mix of data from FEC and OpenSecrets filings. Unlike the past two election cycles, which featured spending from the now-bankrupt crypto exchange FTX and founder Sam Bankman-Fried, this year's contributor list is more robust and diverse. "Most of the crypto donations in 2022 were from FTX and SBF and almost all of them went to Democrats or PACs that support Democrats," Delmore said.

CNN —A district court judge in San Antonio ruled against the Texas attorney general’s attempt to stop one of the state’s biggest counties from mailing voter registration applications to a large number of unregistered voters. Judge Antonia Arteaga on Monday dismissed a temporary restraining order and a temporary injunction filed by Attorney General Ken Paxton as moot, since Bexar County had already mailed out the applications. County commissioners approved a plan on September 3 to mail roughly 210,000 applications through a contract with an outside vendor. The attorney general argued in his challenge that it was illegal for the county to arrange for the unsolicited, mass mailing of voter registration applications. His office also launched an election integrity unit in 2018 investigating allegations of voter fraud, but it has yielded few convictions.

More than 4,000 people have descended here for the Future Proof conference , a vast social gathering designed to give younger registered investment advisors and other investment professionals access to what they want. What they want, apparently, is an intense desire to network with other RIAs and investment professionals and find ways to grow their business. Reimagining the financial conference Future Proof is the brainchild of Barry Ritholtz, co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management, and CEO Josh Brown. SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers placed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve because of his lingering calf and Achilles tendon injuries. The move made Saturday means McCaffrey will miss at least four more games after already sitting out the season opener. He missed only one game combined in 2022-23 — a meaningless Week 18 game last season for San Francisco when he had a sore calf. Now San Francisco will likely rely heavily on Mason, a former undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech who had 83 carries his first two seasons. San Francisco also elevated safety Tracy Walker III from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against Minnesota.

CNN —A California man is facing federal charges after he allegedly tried to choke a flight attendant and “said he was going to kill everybody” while on board a Frontier Airlines flight to San Francisco that had to be diverted on Monday, authorities said. “Flight attendants investigated and discovered that Salva had his hand in the overhead compartment,” the US Attorney’s Office said. During the incident, Salva yelled obscenities at flight attendants and allegedly said, “We are all going to hell,” and “This airplane is going down,” the release said. The flight attendants did not feel safe trying to put Salva back in his seat, and the flight was diverted to Ontario International Airport, the release said. The Saints, one week after blowing out the lowly Carolina Panthers, did the same in Dallas to the high-flying Cowboys. The Ravens were in control for most of the game and then Davante Adams and Brock Bowers took over. The Ravens aren’t built to win when their defense softens — but that isn’t to say they won’t find ways to play the kind of defense the Ravens are known for. For the past year, student-athletes have been faced with an unsettling question: How much are their lives about to change? Seemingly overnight, the 109-year-old conference of a dozen schools, with decades of rivalries, became a conference of only two. “Why add even more stress?”Shannon Cunningham, a former member of the Arizona State University softball team, said the conference change shattered her dream of playing in the Pac-12. All legislation must also be passed by the Senate before it can be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. It is unclear how many of the measures will make it that far given the limited number of days the Senate is in session for the rest of the year. But their success in the House could pave the way for even stronger regulatory moves in the next Congress, Singleton said. Crews battling three major California fires could get some relief from record heat and help from the weather as a cooldown preceded minor containment for the blazes. Hot, flame-fanning winds from the desert are dissipating, and the cooler temps may help firefighters give the blaze their best. Firefighters cut and extinguish a fire in a tree as the Bridge Fire burns in the Big Pines hills near Wrightwood, Calif., on Thursday. He also said mutual aid from Washington, Utah, and North Dakota, including firefighters, were sent to Southern California. CNN —A short but tense distribution dispute between Disney and DirecTV came to an end Saturday after the two sides agreed to a new deal that will restore Disney-owned channels, including ABC, ESPN and FX, to the satellite TV provider. DirecTV stopped airing Disney-owned channels on September 1, denying sports fans the ability to watch NFL games on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” and US Open tennis on ABC. The companies said the distribution deal will include new options for customers, including new packages that include the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ streaming services. DirecTV will also be able to distribute the forthcoming ESPN standalone streaming service at no extra cost to DirecTV customers. Last week, DirecTV filed a complaint Saturday with the Federal Communications Commission alleging Disney did not negotiate in good faith.
