The natural-parenting movement, like the anti-vaccine movement, relies on our forgetfulness about what life was like before the innovations that it denounces. Also like the anti-vaccine movement, the natural-parenting movement is a reaction to very real failures in our medical system, which has more than earned people’s distrust. Natural parenting has since been thoroughly secularized, but it still preaches something akin to spiritual transcendence through female sacrifice. Even if you distrust the natural-parenting movement, its pressures are hard to escape. If the natural-parenting movement really cared about children, it would do some introspection about how often it makes their parents miserable.

Fifty-seven percent of those Americans younger than 50 without children said the major reason they won't have any kids is that they just don't want to. Pew looked at Americans ages 50 and older who don't have children and Americans between 18 and 49 who don't have children and say it's unlikely they will. Meanwhile, 36% of Americans under 50 and without kids said they can't afford to have children. Related storiesAmericans under the age of 50 without kids were nearly four times more likely than Americans over the age of 50 without kids to cite environmental concerns as a major reason not to have children. Americans without kids say they have more time for their careersMany Americans without kids told Pew that the decision lets them focus more on their careers, save money, and have time to engage in social life.

With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

Labor Abuses Abroad
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Megha Rajagopalan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the 1990s, more U.S. companies began manufacturing abroad, where labor was cheaper. Journalists, consumers and human rights groups noticed that, away from the eyes of American unions and regulators, these multinationals sometimes used brutal cost-saving measures, such as sweat shops and child labor. Companies would hire outside inspectors to scrutinize their supply chains. These inspectors would visit their suppliers’ factories, investigate abuses and determine whether everyone was following the rules. Major companies signed on, sending a message that they could clean up their own supply chains.

The adviser, Timothy Pearson, also once sexually abused a female pastor, manipulated her into having sex with him and was abusive during the encounter about 10 years ago — prompting her to file a criminal complaint against him, the suit says. The lawsuit is the fourth action this year to accuse Mr. Pearson of sexual harassment. Like two of the others, it was brought by a male police official who said he was disgusted by Mr. Pearson’s treatment of women at a small unit Mr. Adams created to improve government efficiency. Mr. Pearson declined to comment, referring a reporter to a City Hall spokeswoman and a lawyer the city has hired to represent him. That lawyer denied any wrongdoing on Mr. Pearson’s behalf and said he would vigorously defend him and the city against the claims.

Self-managed abortions happen outside of the formal health-care system and without the formal supervision of a doctor or nurse. The new study suggests that self-managing an abortion with abortion pills has become more common, rising from about 18% of attempts pre-Dobbs to 24% post-Dobbs. Other research has found that abortions within the formal health care system have increased in the US post-Dobbs, driven by a spike in medication abortions, especially those provided through telehealth. “As barriers to facility-based abortion grow, (self-managed abortion) may increasingly become an individual’s only or preferred option to end a pregnancy,” the researchers wrote. “These findings suggest the need to expand access to alternative models of safe and effective abortion care and ensure those seeking health care post-(self-managed abortion) do not face legal risks.”

The sound of Harris laughingTrump, trying out new material to mock Harris, has dubbed his opponent as “Laffin’ Kamala.”“She’s crazy. The magician/comedian Penn Jillette, who spent time with Trump during “The Apprentice” years, has talked about how Trump does not laugh. That’s a recurring theme among Trump supporters – that outrageous claims are clearly jokes. In her endorsement of Harris, French Gates emphasized the need for a leader who will advocate for abortion rights. CNN —The stereotypical “cat lady” is one of pop culture’s most bizarre characters — and easiest punching bags. And though Vance’s description of “cat lady” didn’t include “crazy,” madness has been associated with “cat ladies” for over a century. “There is something about the independence of cats, something I like about them, which can be linked with a suspicion of independent women,” said Alice Madicott, whose book “Cat Women” prods the “crazy cat lady” stereotype. Many women proudly reclaim ‘cat lady’So-called cat ladies have been reclaiming the term for more than a century. And since Vance’s comments resurfaced this week, “childless cat lady” is now appearing on new merchandise including bumper stickers and yard signs.

In an average year, she said, the nonprofit Faith in Florida, where she serves as democracy director, used to add 12,000 new voters to the state’s rolls. These days, Faith in Florida canvassers no longer help would-be voters fill out registration forms. Instead, they hand out slips of paper with a QR code that links to the state’s online registration website. And it’s not just small-time civic groups that are affected: The Florida chapter of the League of Women Voters has scaled back its trademark voter registration drives, too. “These draconian laws and rules are like taking a sledgehammer to hit a flea,” said Cecile Scoon, a lawyer and the president of the Florida league.

And Democratic-aligned donors from all those worlds are eager to help Harris get there. That figure marks the year of the sorority’s founding at Harris’ alma mater, Howard University. More than 1.1 million donors have contributed – with 62% of them first-time givers this cycle, Harris’ campaign said. He said he held his first fundraiser for Harris at his Boston-area home during her successful 2016 Senate campaign. But for all the early enthusiasm, the groups supporting Harris say big challenges remain – both in sustaining her campaign’s early financial momentum and in helping blunt looming attacks on her race and gender.

That’s a closer contest than earlier CNN polling this year had found on the matchup between Biden and Trump. Half of those who back Harris in the new poll (50%) say their vote is more in support of her than against Trump. Among voters under 35, 49% said in April or June that they would support Trump and 42% Biden, but now, 47% support Harris to 43% for Trump. Among Hispanic voters, Biden trailed Trump in earlier polling 50% to 41%; those same voters now split about evenly, 47% Harris to 45% for Trump. That narrowed gap is driven at least partly by increased Harris support among independents who lean toward the Democratic Party.
