Cities like San Antonio, Austin, Denver, Boston, and Minneapolis have turned to basic-income pilot programs to explore ways to reduce those poverty levels. Republicans in Texas, Arizona, Iowa, and South Dakota are making efforts to ban GBI programs at the municipal and state level. AdvertisementStates and cities sometimes fund basic-income programsMany basic-income programs receive funding directly from state and local governments. Nonprofits and philanthropy play a key role in basic-income fundingOther basic-income programs are organized through a nonprofit, or receive funding from foundations and private donors. Along with funding cash payments, the Economic Security Project said that philanthropic donations can help a GBI programs pay for income policy research.

The Harvard professor's research is bankrolled by tech tycoons "pissed off" at academia's dogma. But this boundary-pushing is exactly why he's backed Loeb's research. AdvertisementDesch, the astrophysicist from Arizona University, posted a critique of Loeb's work on arXiv alleging "multiple fatal flaws with the manuscript's arguments." Asked whether he no longer believes in a possible technological origin for the meteor, Loeb said they need to investigate further. As he plans more extravagant expeditions to prove the origin of the interstellar meteor, Loeb likens his critics to crows pecking at the neck of an eagle.

Chances are, you're not going to find your dream job in your 20s. Hoskins spent her 20s working in different cities and industries after graduating with a degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Experimenting with different careers in your 20s can help you develop your skills, discover new passions, or, in Hoskins' case, return to old ones. That decision was influenced, in part, by one of Hoskins' favorite childhood hobbies: flipping through architecture magazines and doodling designs based on the spreads. A native of Chicago, Hoskins says she grew up with plenty of exposure to the striking buildings that make up the city's downtown and pages of Architectural Record, a magazine her mother often brought home.

More than two years later, only four states — Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii — have opened stations funded by the program. The Biden administration says the federal charging program is on track. The grants will fund 47 EV charging stations and related projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico, including 7,500 charging ports. But even some of the government’s own experts say 500,000 public chargers won’t be enough to meet Biden’s ambitious climate goals. The availability of charging stations is key to persuading Americans to buy EVs.

In today’s newsletter, I’m going to tell you about some fascinating primary races that will shed light on some broader trends in U.S. politics. Mike Bost, a Republican and Marine Corps veteran, was first elected to the House in 2014. Don’t say ‘age’Democrats have their own issues that are captured in races in their stronghold of greater Chicago. But to the Democratic establishment, “age” is a word not spoken aloud, not with President Biden in the White House. But similar issues driving their primary fights will play out in swing House districts and swing states across the country.

Chicago voters will consider a ballot measure on Tuesday that progressive Democrats see as a solution to homelessness. The proposal would allow the City Council to increase real estate tax revenue to help fund programs to get people off the street. The ballot measure has prompted arguments about the downtown’s sputtering recovery, the influx of migrants that has strained city services and political coalitions, and the wisdom of entrusting Mayor Brandon Johnson and his fellow progressives with more tax money. One issue not being contested: Homelessness is a problem in Chicago. The group says that the new tax would deal another blow to an office real estate market still mired in a post-pandemic vacancy crisis.

In part, that was because it was just impossible to trace Irish famine immigrants and find out what had happened to them. This is just inconceivable to anyone who had ever thought about the famine Irish given the obstacles that faced them. Biden is one of four US presidents who descended from Irish famine immigrants. The famine immigrants really were the ones who cemented the idea of the American Dream as we understand it today. At the time, the neighborhood was home to the more Irish immigrants than any other part of the city.

Researchers have exposed a potential security vulnerability in Meta's VR headsets, a new study says. The so-called "inception attack" allows an attacker to spy on and control a user's VR environment. The headset also had to be in developer mode, which the researchers said many Meta Quest users keep enabled in order to get third-party apps, adjust resolution, and take screenshots. Researchers created cloned versions of the Meta Quest Browser and VRChat app. AdvertisementTo test the inception attack process with real people, researchers had 27 study participants interact with VR headsets while they carried out the attack.

Christmas said it’s impossible to talk about weight gain around menopause without talking about the other elephant in the room: aging. Many women gain weight around menopause. And there’s at least one more factor that contributes to weight gain as we age.

The magnitude of Nvidia's run is simply mind boggling, with the stock adding $1 trillion in market value in about two months. Trying to short this parabolic stock is what we used to call in the trading pits of Chicago, a "widowmaker." However, I believe that once Nvidia (NVDA) hits $1,000 it might actually be due to take a breather. Overbought territory Typically, an investor will buy a put if they think a stock is overbought or are concerned it will fall. That being said, Nvidia was trading at the same RSI level of 86 in early February while trading at $693, nearly $300 ago.

CNN —A peculiar fossil has helped scientists discover an unusual bird that lived among the dinosaurs 120 million years ago, and the find is changing the way researchers think about avian evolution. Enantiornithines are known as “opposite birds” because they had a shoulder joint feature that greatly differs from the ones modern birds have. “Before Imparavis, toothlessness in this group of birds was known to occur around 70 million years ago,” Clark said. When Jingmai O’Connor, the Field Museum’s associate curator of fossil reptiles, visited the Shandong museum’s collections a few years ago, the fossil caught her attention. While modern birds have fused forelimb digits, enantiornithines still had independent movement in the “little fingers” on their wings.

The corporate tax cuts that President Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017 have boosted investment in the U.S. economy and delivered a modest pay bump for workers, according to the most rigorous and detailed study yet of the law’s effects. Those benefits are less than Republicans promised, though, and they have come at a high cost to the federal budget. The corporate tax cuts came nowhere close to paying for themselves, as conservatives insisted they would. The study is the first to use vast data from corporate tax filings to draw conclusions about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which passed with only Republican support. Its findings could help shape debate on renewing parts of the law that are set to expire or have begun to phase out.
