From putting greens and par-three holes to full-blown course replicas, the sport is increasingly taking up residence in gardens and backyards as golf enthusiasts of all levels look to shorten their travel time to the tee. California in particular is especially prone to drought, with state officials encouraging its citizens to cut their water usage. Yet “the number one” factor that can hike prices for larger greens, Nappi explains, is — ironically — drainage. Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

Why America hates its children
  + stars: | 2024-01-07 | by ( Lydia Kiesling | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
Time and again, I was struck by a public attitude toward children I seldom encountered in America: unequivocal support. In America, we socialize our children to see strangers not as helpers but as threats. Virtually every other industrialized nation provides more government aid for their children than America does. Children who are neglected — a loose term inextricably tied to poverty — are thrown into a foster-care system known for its propensity to harm children. From the tumult of the pandemic, the calls for America to care more for its children are getting louder.

I had to resort to an iBuyer to sell the house quickly and get out, which meant I lost $100,000. There's an account called Living Big in a Tiny House that I always found fascinating. Using fruit peel, orange seeds and coffee ground waste collected from businesses in Italy, Krill products can be redistributed to the same businesses for use in their offices, instead of furniture made from common plastics. “After three or four years, you have to change your furniture [anyway],” says Marco Di Maio, director of operations at Krill. “But if all that furniture was made using our materials, we would be able to recover them, crush them and print other furniture with the same material. First, the food waste is dried and crushed into a very fine powder. It’s also looking to develop injection molding — injecting the molten compound of food waste and PHB into a mold instead of 3D-printing — which could cut costs and save time.

Reviewing “A Married Couple” in The New York Times, Vincent Canby complained of the “unreality” the camera introduced in the couple’s behavior. Are Antoinette and Billy, unselfconscious about sharing intimate details and even appearing unclothed with the camera rolling, natural exhibitionists, or is the existence of a movie changing their relationship? The emotional volatility has been likened to that in John Cassavetes’s films, and Billy and Antoinette’s exchanges have a similar absurdist quality. “What we don’t know is whether we really hate one another or not,” Billy says near the end, in a diagnosis of their marriage. And as Antoinette picks at his chest hair and he strokes her nose, “A Married Couple” hints at a connection that a camera can’t see.

Scientists create tiny living robots from human cells
  + stars: | 2023-11-30 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Scientists have created tiny living robots from human cells that can move around in a lab dish and may one day be able to help heal wounds or damaged tissue, according to a new study. The scientists used adult human cells from the trachea, or windpipe, from anonymous donors of different ages and sexes. Earlier studies had also shown that the cells can form organoids — clumps of cells widely used for research. “Nothing happened on day one, day two, day four or five, but as biology usually does, around day seven, there was a rapid transition,” she said. They are not made from human embryos, research that is tightly restricted, or genetically modified in any way, he said.

A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Louis Jacobson | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +8 min
Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

“This study adds to a growing pool of evidence suggesting a link between UPFs (ultraprocessed foods) and cancer risk,” said Dr. Helen Croker, assistant director of research and policy at World Cancer Research Fund International, which funded the study, in a statement. Ultraprocessed foods are often calorie-dense and are considered to be a driver of excess weight, experts say. An unusual linkOddly, the study also found a link between ultraprocessed food and accidental deaths, which was being used as a control for the study. A growing associationThis is not the first study to find a link between ultraprocessed food and cancer. In that study, eating more ultraprocessed animal products and sweetened beverages explained a good part of the association.

A.S. Byatt, one of the most ambitious writers of her generation, whose dazzling 1990 novel, “Possession,” won the Booker Prize and brought her international fame as a novelist and unapologetic intellectual, has died. Her longtime publisher, Chatto & Windus, announced the death in a statement on Friday, saying she had died at her home. Ms. Byatt was a brilliant critic and scholar who broke the academic mold by publishing 11 novels and six collections of short stories. “I am not an academic who happens to have written a novel,” she bristled in an interview with The New York Times Magazine in 1991. CNN —Eating higher amounts of ultraprocessed food raises the risk of being diagnosed with multimorbidity, or having multiple chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, a new study found. “This paper reports a 9% increase in risk of multimorbidity to be associated with higher intake of ultraprocessed food,” Sanders said in a statement. In the United States, a 2019 study estimated some 71% of the food supply may be ultraprocessed. Sugary and artificially-flavored drinks and ultraprocessed meats like hot dogs were significantly linked to the development of ccancer and other disease.
