After being rushed in an ambulance to a hospital, the 15-month-old girl died from a fentanyl overdose. Political Cartoons View All 1148 ImagesIn California, where the Legislature has failed to pass such laws, prosecutors in at least three counties are turning to drunk driving laws to charge parents whose children die from fentanyl overdose. Last month, a Maine woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter after her 14-month-old son’s fentanyl overdose. Prosecutors say the parents, like drunk drivers, knew fentanyl can injure or kill people. The boyfriend and girlfriend were charged with murder after their toddler died of a fentanyl overdose in June 2020.

China accounts for 19% of Apple’s revenue, and less than 1% of the population works in the government. At 28 times forward earnings, Apple's current multiple, about $8 billion of value goes away. The wages in Bali, which has a population of more than four million people, can be higher than in other parts of Indonesia. Others, like four of the five young housekeepers who died in the elevator accident last week, are day laborers or contractors who work without a social safety net, sometimes for years. In the Ayuterra Resort case, the government insurance agency decided to give all five workers insurance payouts of over $10,000. Representatives for Ayuterra Resort, in the Ubud area of Bali, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. On Thursday, the online rate for a two-bedroom Ayuterra penthouse villa with a private pool in October was nearly $700.

Amgen has a promising growth outlook despite facing a "substantial patent cliff," according to HSBC. While some very old products are finally facing patent cliffs it will likely be gradual and a broadened portfolio allows for continued growth," analyst Morten Herholdt wrote in a Wednesday note. Amgen is set to lose exclusivity on patents for drugs that make up about three-quarters of the company's sales. The company's acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics will also help it extend sales and pipeline into the rare diseases market, Herholdt added. Due to the current investor skepticism with the looming patent cliff, Amgen shares are trading at an "undemanding" earnings multiple, according to the analyst.

CNN —Water levels at Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world and South America’s largest – are dropping precipitously after an unprecedented winter heat wave. While water levels are known to fluctuate each year, these changes have become more extreme due to the climate crisis. Communities that rely on fishing are struggling as low water levels adds to mounting problems: declining fish stocks due to pollution and overfishing. “It’s going to keep affecting us, there won’t be any more totora, the islands are deteriorating, that’s what worries us,” Charca told CNN. Grinia Avalos, deputy director for climatology with Senamhi, told CNN that these warmer temperatures are expected to continue until at least February 2024.

An American soldier sits on a military vehicle, at al-Omar oil field in Deir Al Zor, Syria March 23, 2019. An Arab tribal backlash against the rule of the Kurdish YPG militia has led to clashes, with over 150 killed and dozens injured. Arab tribal fighters initially drove out the Kurdish-led forces from several large towns but the SDF has begun to regain the upper hand. Arab tribal leaders say they have been deprived of their oil wealth after the Kurdish-led forces laid their hands on Syria's biggest oil wells after the departure of Islamic State. Washington has pushed for a bigger say for Arab inhabitants in running their affairs in SDF areas, Western diplomats say.

Together, experts say, these efforts aim to enhance China’s military reach, which currently includes only one operational overseas naval base in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa. “It’s a question of when – not if – China will secure its next overseas military outpost,” he said. This photo taken on August 1, 2017, shows Chinese People's Liberation Army personnel attending the opening ceremony of China's new military base in Djibouti. The Hambantota commercial port in Sri Lanka has long been considered a prime candidate for a Chinese naval base. However, China’s path to developing permanent overseas bases, if indeed that is its aim, is not straightforward.

If anything, armed Black protesters such as the Black Panthers triggered cries for stronger gun control laws, not looser ones. He’s a very smart man, blessed with superior communication skills, yet he constantly exposes his ignorance, his cynicism or both. The bottom line is this: When a political class still broadly believes in policing dishonesty, the nation can manage the negative effects of widespread civic ignorance. When the political class corrects itself, the people will tend to follow. But when key members of the political class abandon any pretense of knowledge or truth, a poorly informed public is simply unequipped to hold them to account.

CNN —As rapidly warming global temperatures help push Antarctica’s sea ice to unprecedented lows, it’s threatening the very existence of one of the continent’s most iconic species: emperor penguins. Emperor penguins rely on stable sea ice attached to land for nesting and raising their chicks. For the past few years, scientists have been sounding the alarm about a steep decline in Antarctica’s sea ice. In mid-July, Antarctic sea ice reached the lowest level for this time of year since records began in 1945. Antarctic sea ice also helps regulate the planet’s temperature, reflecting the sun’s incoming energy back to space.

Homes damaged by fire are seen in Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii, U.S., August 14, 2023. REUTERS/Jorge Garcia Acquire Licensing RightsAug 18 (Reuters) - Hawaiian Electric Industries (HE.N) is seeking expert advice amid growing scrutiny over its role in the Maui wildfires, but the largest power supplier in the US island state said on Friday that the goal was not to restructure the company. The company did not clearly outline the purpose for which it was seeking expert advice. "Like any company in this situation would do, and as we do in the normal course of business, we are seeking advice from various experts," it said in a filing. It did not include around 2,600 homes and businesses that were destroyed, which represent less than 1% of its customers.

Homes damaged by fire are seen in Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii, U.S., August 14, 2023. The company said in its filing that shutting off power was not part of its high-wind management protocol. Analysts have said Hawaiian's situation is reminiscent of that of PG&E Corp (PCG.N) and wildfires in California. PG&E filed for bankruptcy protection in 2019, and subsequently restructured, citing potential liabilities exceeding $30 billion stemming from California wildfires that were blamed on its equipment. As of Thursday, about 1,900 customers in West Maui remained without electricity, Hawaiian said.

Opinion | The Hidden Risk of Getting Paid in Stock Options
  + stars: | 2023-08-18 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You hear two stories about how private companies raise money to grow. One is that the regulations on them are too restrictive, depriving the nation of innovation and jobs. A new study makes a pretty strong case for the “too loose” story, at least in the case of one class of investors: employees of those private companies. You might not think of employees as investors, but they definitely are if they are paid with stock options, warrants or other forms of equity compensation. Employees can be surprisingly uninformed about the value of the stock options they’re granted, even if the options account for a big share of their compensation.

Part of the problem is the sheer diversity of threats. “Hawaii is a leader among states in its approach to adaptation planning, particularly as it relates to sea level rise, extreme storms and infrastructure,” said Mark Rupp, adaptation program director for the Georgetown Climate Center in Washington. Josh Green of Hawaii issued an order that stops the state from adopting new or updated building standards. The governor said the move was necessary to address a severe housing shortage. Attempts to block tougher building codes in the name of affordability are common nationwide, even if it sacrifices safety, said Michele Steinberg, wildfire division director for the National Fire Protection Association.

‘Filter bubbles’ and democracySometimes the dangerous effects of social media are clear. As a result, they mostly share and see stories from people on their own side of the political spectrum. That “filter bubble” of information supposedly exposes users to increasingly skewed versions of reality, undermining consensus and reducing their understanding of people on the opposing side. “The ‘Filter Bubble’ Explains Why Trump Won and You Didn’t See It Coming,” announced a New York Magazine article a few days after the election. Changing information doesn’t change mindsBut without rigorous testing, it’s been hard to figure out whether the filter bubble effect was real.
