AI and data centers are driving up electricity usage in the US after a decade of flat demand. As a result, the utilities sector is performing strongly, especially independent power producers. IPP stocks like NRG, CEG, and VST will benefit the most from AI, says one portfolio manager. Investors are pouring into utilities stocks as data centers drive outsized demand for electricity. This is big news for the US utilities sector, which has experienced essentially flat demand growth over the last decade.

But only a few restaurant brands that can hold on to their pricing will be able to come out on top, the firm said. Six popular stocks in the group were each given a buy rating: Chipotle , Domino's Pizza , Restaurant Brands International , Starbucks , Sweetgreen and Shake Shack . Cho placed a neutral rating on McDonald's , Yum Brands and Wingstop and a sell on Jack in the Box and Wendy's . The bank is also bullish on Restaurant Brands, owner of Burger King and Popeye's, which Cho noted is undergoing a business transformation. Another restaurant Goldman is bullish on is Domino's Pizza, which Cho believes has numerous catalysts that could lift the stock, including a newly revamped rewards program and an Uber Eats expansion.

CNN —USA Basketball’s decision to omit Caitlin Clark from the Olympic roster was initially met with some shock. However, USA Basketball has made a “terrible decision,” according to CNN Sport analyst Christine Brennan, by omitting a phenomenon like Clark from the roster. Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA champion, Brittney Griner, a nine-time All Star and A’ja Wilson, a two-time MVP, have all represented Team USA at an Olympic Games before. “She’s the biggest thing in sports, not just women’s basketball in the United States,” Brennan said of why Clark should be included. With or without Clark, Team USA is the overwhelming favorite to win gold in Paris and continue its unbeaten Olympic record stretching back to 1992.

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), at a rates decision news conference in Frankfurt, Germany, on Thursday, April 11, 2024. The European Central Bank is widely expected to announce a reduction in interest rates at its meeting in Frankfurt on Thursday, despite lingering inflationary pressures in the 20-nation euro zone. The central bank's key rate has been at a record 4% since September 2023. A cut would be the ECB's first since September 2019, when the deposit facility was in negative territory. Canada on Wednesday became the first G7 nation to cut interest rates in the current cycle, while Sweden and Switzerland's central banks already announced their own rate reductions this year.

ECB: Interest rates are coming down in Europe

London CNN —The European Central Bank cut interest rates Thursday, moving before the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England to lower borrowing costs as inflation recedes following years of rate hikes. Central banks in Switzerland and Sweden have also cut interest rates this year. Analysts doubt the central bank will cut rates again at its next meeting in July. It added that it would keep interest rates “sufficiently restrictive for as long as necessary” to return inflation to the 2% target. Higher interest rates tend to attract more international capital flows into a country, lifting demand for its currency.

Jonathan and Jacqueline Sanchez pushed their net worth over $1 million in 2021, through a combination of savings, investments and real estate equity. But it took awhile for Jonathan, who grew up in a frugal, single-parent household to feel fully financially secure, despite the couple's millionaire status. But the diversity of their income sources, as well as their commitment to being frugal, are some of the major reasons the couple now lives — and spends — comfortably. Rather, think of how you'd live in the case of a real financial emergency. Having a diversified group of income sources allows the couple to feel financially secure, even as they go through the usual ups and downs of launching and growing an online business.

Thursday is a big day for the European Central Bank. It is widely expected to lower interest rates by a quarter percentage point, its first cut since 2019 — and outpace the Fed in lowering borrowing costs. The big questions on our mind: Will Christine Lagarde, the central bank’s president, signal further cuts at its July and September meetings? The good news: Economists say the era of elevated rates around the world is coming to an end. But they add that sticky inflation will tie central bankers’ hands, limiting their ability to lower borrowing costs much.

President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde arrives to address a press conference following the meeting of the governing council of the ECB in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany, on April 11, 2024. FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank this week is set to cut borrowing costs for the euro area for the first time since September 2019. It will mark the official end to the record fast-hiking cycle that begun after the Covid-19 pandemic as inflation soared higher. But investors' attention looks like it has already moved on to what will happen after this June cut by the Frankfurt institution. "Judging by the commentary from officials, there is no questioning of the wisdom of cutting rates on 6 June," said Mark Wall, ECB watcher with Deutsche Bank.

The director of the National Counterterrorism Center will step down next month, Biden administration officials said on Wednesday. The director, Christine S. In recent years, a resurgent China and Russia, as well as the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza, have replaced counterterrorism as the country’s main national security priorities. The Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, ISIS Khorasan, dramatically demonstrated its expanding reach earlier this year, conducting deadly attacks in Iran and Russia. In addition to supporting Hamas in Gaza, Iran backs extremist groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Even though it was operational for only about a week, the pier helped deliver some 1,000 metric tons of aid into Gaza before breaking apart. That’s well short of the military’s goal of moving 500 tons of aid per day over the pier. The risks however were deemed too great at the time, with unpredictable winter weather and heavy fighting in Gaza. “We assumed a lot of risk in using a military operation for this purpose,” a second senior administration official added. An Idaho judge on Saturday sentenced a man to death, two days after he was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges in the 2019 killings of his first wife and two of his current wife’s children, capping a case that drew scrutiny because of the couple’s “doomsday” religious beliefs. The decision came after jurors took more than a day to deliberate during the special sentencing proceeding in the case against the man, Chad Daybell, 55, in Ada County District Court in Boise, Idaho. Earlier on Saturday, the jury had recommended the death penalty before the judge ordered a short recess to make a final sentencing decision. As the judge, Steven W. Boyce of the Seventh Judicial District, read his decision, Mr. Daybell sat with his hands in his lap, expressionless at the defense table. Defense lawyers did not have any questions when asked by the judge.
