In Iowa, 13 of the 15 nursing homes that closed in 2022 were in rural areas, according to the Iowa Health Care Association. “We’ve had more nursing homes go bankrupt in the last year than in the last 10 years combined,” she said. Once considered taboo in film and television, gay entertainers and characters will be hard to miss at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Some of the evenings most nominated films — including sci-fi dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and psychological thriller “Tár,” — and TV series that include “The White Lotus” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” — star LGBTQ actors or feature fictional queer characters. And to top off the evening, the Golden Globes will honor gay television writer and producer Ryan Murphy, perhaps best known for co-creating “Glee,” “Pose” and the “American Horror Story” franchise, with a lifetime achievement award. While this year’s pool of Golden Globe nominees ups the awards ceremony’s queer factor, many of the most anticipated wins involve seemingly straight actors playing queer characters. The Golden Globes airs on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

The counsel, Hamilton Fox, alleges Giuliani had frivolous reasons for claiming election fraud in his suit before a federal district court in Pennsylvania. But those rules require that a complaint alleging fraud must state the fraud with “particularity,” i.e., provide specific facts. Given all this, Fox makes a compelling case that Giuliani drew up an argument and submitted papers to a federal district court that were almost certainly frivolous. Moreover, the lawyer ordinarily files the complaint based on what the lawyer knows at the time of filing. But in most cases, the appropriate response to a poorly supported fraud filing is the one that’s always before the court: to dismiss the case.

CNN —The cliché about award shows is that it’s an honor just to be nominated. Having endeavored to address those issues on both fronts, the Globes are here again, although not everyone has embraced the event or the HFPA with open arms. "Avatar: The Way of Water" debuts Dec. 16. The steep decline in award-show viewing, exacerbated by the pandemic, hasn’t made studios or talent any less enthusiastic about earning such recognition. In that sense, however tarnished the Golden Globes might be, its example could be another factor that helps point the way for the Oscars when those nominations are unveiled in January.
But that doesn’t mean freight railroads are providing good service to their customers. Many of the problems tangling up the supply chain, driving up prices and slowing the economy can be traced to the steady decline in freight rail service in recent years. Some experts who represent rail customers who have complained about service in the past say service has gotten better since earlier this year. “The national freight rail network is broken, and the need for long-term rail reform is clear. Jack Rives in 2010 became executive director of the ABA, the nation’s largest voluntary bar association, overseeing an operation that now has 166,000 dues-paying members and a staff of more than 1,000. The ABA said deputy executive director Alpha Brady will take over temporarily from Rives while it seeks a permanent replacement. He also eliminated $42 million in annual expenses by restricting the ABA staff and reducing other operating expenses, it said. The group lost about 56,000 dues-paying members between 2009 and 2019, prompting it to overhaul its membership structure that year in a bid to make it less complex, more affordable, and more appealing to lawyers. Attracting members remains a top priority, Rives told the ABA’s House of Delegates when it met in August.

CNN —Six supplements that people commonly take for heart health don’t help lower “bad” cholesterol or improve cardiovascular health, according to a study published Sunday, but statins did. Some people believe that common dietary supplements – fish oil, garlic, cinnamon, turmeric, plant sterols and red yeast rice – will lower their “bad” cholesterol. The fatty deposits can block the flow of oxygen and blood that the heart needs to work and the blockage can lead to a heart attack or stroke. He calls these supplements “21st century snake oil.”In the United States, the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 sharply limited the US Food and Drug Administration’s ability to regulate supplements. “The good news, we know statins work,” Khera said.

But experts say there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should wash your hair — or what you can do to maintain it on off days. When to washRossi generally tells his patients they should wash their hair once or twice per week. But if you’ve had chemical treatments that can make your hair drier — such as bleach, perms or relaxers — you might want to wash it less than once weekly to avoid breaking or brittle hair or split ends, he said. But you should wash it at least every two to three weeks to keep your scalp and hair clean and healthy. If you’re experiencing perpetual issues with your scalp or hair — such as dandruff, hair loss or brittle hair — you should see a board-certified dermatologist who treats conditions in these areas, Rossi said.

Running and jumping come easily for children. “As adults, we stop playing, and unless you’re an athlete, you probably rarely find yourself jumping, bounding or sprinting,” says Sarah Walls , strength and conditioning coach for the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Washington Mystics. Without that type of activity, we lose our athleticism. Most mainstream exercises work in one plane of motion, she says, and don’t involve plyometrics—quick, explosive movements that train muscles to produce power. Drills that include jumping, hopping and quick movements in many planes benefit more than athletes.

Mortgage rates rise again, creeping closer to 7%

Mortgage rates have more than doubled since the beginning of this year as the Federal Reserve pushed ahead with its unprecedented campaign of hiking interest rates in order to tame soaring inflation. Mortgage rates tend to track the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds. As investors see or anticipate rate hikes, they make moves which send yields higher and mortgage rates rise. This week, the 10-year US Treasury hit a high not seen since 2008, an indication that mortgage rates could rise even further. Affordability remains a challengeHigher mortgage rates are making it even harder for prospective buyers to afford a home.

"It just gives us a chance to talk about Herschel’s support of law enforcement and law enforcement's support for him. If he said, ‘I’m a law enforcement officer and I have these powers,’ then I have a problem with that.
