Photographer: Christopher Dilts/Bloomberg via Getty Images Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesAs holiday shopping season begins, lack of big orders from retailers is the rule amid fears that consumer spending will be weak, according to a new CNBC Supply Chain Survey. At the CNBC Evolve Global Summit last Thursday, Target CEO Brian Cornell said the company is doubling down on its cautious outlook for the holiday season. The CNBC Supply Chain Survey was conducted October 21-October 31 among logistics executives who manage freight manufacturing orders and transportation, including those at C.H. Lunar New Year and order volumes The CNBC Supply Chain Survey underscores an overall climate of uncertainty that is defining the market right now. The freight trucking recession Trucking companies get paid per load, and the low expectations for orders imply potentially lower revenue this holiday season.

Two Republican lawmakers have filed separate resolutions to censure Tlaib this week, after a similar effort failed last week. “I have been really careful, partly because our Michigan delegation is so small, and we work together,” Stevens told CNN. “Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider is circulating a statement condemning Tlaib’s recent comments but stopped short of saying he supports a censure resolution. Last week, 23 House Republicans opposed a Tlaib censure resolution led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. But a censure motion is not the way to do it.”The proposed Tlaib censure has sparked a tit-for-tat among lawmakers looking to target one another across the aisle.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib is facing condemnation for endorsing the phrase "from the river to the sea." Here's what you should know about the current controversy over the slogan — as well as its origins and contemporary use. Towards the end of that video, a crowd of pro-Palestine protestors in Michigan can be heard chanting the slogan. In other words, the slogan did originate as a call for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state. All of it, from the [Mediterranean] Sea to the [Jordan] River, and we are not here to apologize for this."

Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat of Michigan and the only Palestinian American member of Congress, at a demonstration outside the Capitol in Washington last month. Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan and an outspoken voice for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war, released a video on Friday that accused President Biden of supporting the genocide of Palestinians. President, the American people are not with you on this one,” Ms. Tlaib says in the video. But accusing Mr. Biden of supporting genocide marks an extraordinary broadside against the president by a lawmaker from his own party. “As the Israeli government carries out ethnic cleansing in Gaza, President Biden is cheering on Netanyahu, whose own citizens are protesting his refusal to support a cease-fire,” Ms. Tlaib said on Thursday.

Indian economy regains its swagger as China stumbles

New Delhi CNN —India’s economy is like an elephant. India’s economy is currently worth nearly $3.5 trillion, making it the world’s fifth largest. “India’s economy is comfortably placed to grow at an annual rate of at least 6% in the coming few years,” Barclays said. But even as India’s heft is increasing, it is far from recreating the economic miracle China unleashed decades ago. It will, no doubt — though it won’t be enough to shield the world economy should China’s economy stumble badly,” they added.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Two other companies and an academic center, Boston Children’s Hospital, are testing their own sickle cell gene therapies. While these therapies could reduce the suffering of sickle cell patients in the United States and other wealthy countries, there is an even greater need for them in some developing countries like Nigeria. One company, Beam, is testing a way to provide gene editing that requires nothing more than a single infusion in a doctor’s office.

It's one, he argues, where finally finding agreement on a long-sought two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict should be a priority. The White House says Biden conveyed the same message directly to Netanyahu during a telephone call this past week. “It also means that when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, and in our view it has to be a two-state solution,” Biden said. In an updated version of the Foreign Affairs essay posted online, Sullivan wrote that the administration was “committed to a two-state solution." One presidential hopeful, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, said Israel should feel free to abandon “the myth of a two-state solution."

Those concerns are battering airline stocks even as earnings reports point to a continuing consumer appetite for travel. While both United and Delta said travel demand is holding up, double-digit declines in airfares year-over-year suggest airline pricing power has peaked. United, which has not forecast profit for 2024, on Tuesday similarly said travel demand remains "strong and steady." New labor contracts as well as the higher fuel prices mean cost pressures aren't going away. American Airlines (AAL.O) and Alaska Air (ALK.N), who will report earnings Thursday, have cut their third-quarter profit estimates due to higher fuel costs.

David Solomon’s Goldman remix is audibly off-key

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Having given up a side-gig in DJ-ing, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) boss David Solomon has one less distraction. Goldman reported a one-third year-on-year drop in earnings on Tuesday, in a quarter riddled with one-off charges. Those included a hit related to buy-now-pay-later lender GreenSky, which Goldman bought only two years ago, and is selling. Absent all that, Goldman would have made a return on equity of just over 10%. Goldman made a 7.1% return on equity in the quarter, on an annualized basis, which would have been 10.2% without one-off charges.

Overview: Forecast or fantasyWe're now at least two years on from when a slew of space companies went public during the SPAC frenzy, and, look, none of them look great. Now a bit further down the road, I want to look at a different financial metric: 2023 revenue projections. I ran an informal series for a while to mark when a space company announced it was going public. The rest of the pack isn't as on the mark: A few companies are roughly halfway to their earlier 2023 revenue projections, or performing even better. Spire forecast 2023 revenue of $227 million and is closing in on about $107 million.

It comes on top of initiatives such as the Women in Finance charter backed by the finance ministry, which are well established and supported, although progress has been uneven. "The regulator sets the mandatory baseline, we can look to aspirational goals," said Sarah Maynard, global senior head, external diversity, equity and inclusion, at the CFA Institute. Given the global nature of finance, the CFA is also looking at how the code can help join up different national initiatives.

The company's owner, luxury goods giant LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, is expanding a program that trains people to become artisans who can make Tiffany's high-end jewelry. The company said Thursday it's begun a two-year bench jewelry apprenticeship program involving Tiffany and the Rhode Island School of Design. The move comes as Gen Zers rethink the idea of college as costs skyrocket and US student-loan payments are resuming following a pandemic hiatus. The programs work with colleges and universities to help conduct the training. LVMH has used apprenticeship programs to help develop the skilled artisans it needs for its brands.

But finding the right fit isn't always easy, thanks in part to the old-school practices of most homebuilders. Vyshnevska and Hnatkovskyy launched NewHomeMate (formerly PropertyMate) in 2020, as the housing market was beginning to reach a fever pitch. Earlier this year, the company announced that it had raised a $5.5 million seed round from funders to expand and grow its vision. "Many people realized that now is the best moment to buy homes, even with high interest rates, if you see where rent is going across much of the United States, and their only real option is new construction," Hnatkovskyy said. Vyshnevska and Hnatkovsky walked Insider through the pitch deck they used to raise their $5.5 million seed round with some confidential financial information redacted.
