CNN —Ecuador may have a 46-year-old woman representing the small Andean nation in the Miss Universe beauty pageant later this year. Yajaira Quizhpi – who represents the Sierra region – is vying for the national title of Miss Universe Ecuador. The winner will go on to represent Ecuador at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico in September. Quizhpi is the oldest woman in the country’s history to participate in the contest organized by the Miss Universe franchise. In May, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA resigned within days of one another amid allegations of mismanagement, toxicity and conditions that impacted their mental health.

But in Latin America, as Mexico’s milestone election showed over the weekend, electing a woman as president has become remarkably routine. Claudia Sheinbaum, who won Mexico’s election in a landslide against another female candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, joins at least a dozen other women who have served as presidents of Latin American countries since the 1970s. Of course, world leaders have generally stayed mum on the issue of which man they prefer – although I would wager that most favor the status quo over a return to the raucous years of Trump’s presidency. Some world leaders have already signaled their aversion to another Trump presidency. But for these foreign leaders, coming out against Trump is a move that is chock full of risks. The stakes in this election are too high for global leaders to stay mum.

CNN —Colombia has approved a bill banning bullfights, marking a significant victory for animal rights activists over advocates who argued to uphold the sport in the South American country. On Tuesday, 93 congressmen voted in favor of banning bullfighting – with only two against it – sending the bill to President Gustavo Petro for final approval. Colombia is one of only eight countries where bullfighting still takes place. The others are France, Portugal, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Spain and Venezuela, where the controversial sport still commands audiences but also firm opposition. Other countries in South America which have already banned the practice include Brazil and Argentina.

Alejandra Rodriguez made headlines across the world in April when she was crowned Miss Buenos Aires, becoming the first sexagenarian to win a contest organized by the Miss Universe franchise. “This is the first step of a change that is coming,” Rodriguez, an attorney and journalist by profession, told CNN en Español after the contest. Those 17 countries, along with the United States, have citizens whom Hamas took captive at the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. The meeting comes at a critical moment when the efforts to secure the release of hostages and Gaza ceasefire appear to have stalled once again. Multiple US diplomats have told CNN in recent weeks that they are consistently hearing those concerns from their counterparts abroad.
